My Story:

Here we go again! I have a long-standing love affair with Zenbivy and their amazing products. Most of my best adventures have been logged in a Zenbivy quilt. Every time I think they can’t get any better, they go and outdo themselves. So, here we go again, indeed!

What I was most excited about was the new Muscovy down, as it boasts a more responsive down that will “spring back” quicker than others and to a more full form. This provides unsurpassed comfort as the fibers cling to each other more than traditional goose down, which helps limit those dead spaces other down bags can suffer. Lastly, this down comes from free-range birds and is treated using environmentally sustainable methods. So you get a great product that you can feel good about.

Onto the adventure…

When I began planning my spring Hells Canyon trip, I knew it was going to be the perfect place to test out my new Zenbivy UL quilt and sheet. This trip has historically shown me that I can experience almost all four seasons in a matter of a couple of days, or sometimes even hours. So, what better place to test the versatility of a new system?

My first night was purposely out on a ridgetop. I was confident it would be windy and nasty. I was also testing a shelter, so it was a misery with intent (pun intended). I knew the breeze would provide an exceptional opportunity to test the draft-eliminating sheet of this system. and the Zenbivy UL air mattress. You will also notice that I have the Zenbivy dry sacks and compression bags. These are a must have and you will love the vent ports that allow for optimal compression!

My plans worked perfectly, and I spent the night in a horrible wind tunnel. If I’m honest, it was pure misery. The wind kept me awake all night, and the oddest thing happened with the weather. It was relatively chilly when I went to bed, and by midnight, some sort of inversion happened, and the canyon heated up. It got almost uncomfortably warm. This is where a quilt really shines. I was able to pop my feet out and adjust my temperature to something more manageable for sleep. A few hours later, it was frigid, and we woke to a light rain. Anyway, horrible for sleeping but great for testing. I should note it was the wind noise that kept sleep so elusive.

The next night presented a new challenge. It rained all night long with temperatures in the lower 40s, creating a perfect storm of condensation inside my tent. Not ideal in any situation, especially for those who know about down as they understand that moisture is its enemy. Luckily, Zenbivy uses ExpeDRY hydrophobic down, and while condensation and moisture were unavoidable in this situation, the treated down held up wonderfully to the constant dripping inside the tent. I actually slept soundly to the pitter-patter of raindrops on the tent and never even had a shiver.

My final night of testing was in a torrential rainstorm. It rained and rained and rained again. The high slopes were covered in snow, and it was overall chilly and unpleasant for those who aren’t programmed to “embrace the suck” fortunately, the Army taught me that valuable skill.

I also had a better pitch of my shelter and found a way to mitigate nearly all of the condensation issues I had faced the night before. So, this ended up being the most pleasant night of the whole trip. I slept like a baby and woke to a dry tent, dry quilt, and a rested body. I would say it was a great success.

All said and done, I feel I gave this sleep system a thorough test. It held up very well in warm, wet, cold, and windy conditions. If you are in the market for a UL sleep system, the Zenbivy UL Quilt and Sheet should be at the top of your list.
