The Punjab government has unveiled the proposed route for Lahore’s electric tram project, with officials confirming that the procurement phase is currently underway following the completion of the contract process.
Speaking to the media, Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar said the electric tram is expected to begin operating on Lahore’s roads during the next fiscal year, marking a major step toward modern and environmentally friendly public transportation in the provincial capital.
The minister stated that an earlier proposal involving the development of a complete metro-style system for the project has been deferred. Instead, the government is moving forward with a more practical electric tram model aimed at improving urban mobility while minimizing infrastructure costs.
According to Bilal Akbar, the proposed tram route will originate from the Central Business District (CBD) and travel through key city corridors including Jail Road and Mall Road before terminating at Istanbul Chowk.
The transport minister also assured the public that no trees will be cut down for the implementation of the electric tram project, emphasizing the government’s commitment to environmentally sustainable development.
Officials believe the electric tram system will provide residents with a modern, efficient, and eco-friendly transportation option while helping reduce traffic congestion and vehicle emissions in Lahore.
The project forms part of the Punjab government’s broader efforts to modernize urban transport infrastructure and promote sustainable mobility solutions across the province.
