Nintendo Switch 2 Is Getting a Replaceable Battery This Autumn

Nintendo didn’t do this voluntarily. New EU regulations requiring user-replaceable batteries in consumer electronics come into force in February 2027, and Nintendo is getting ahead of the deadline. Starting this summer, revised versions of the Switch 2 and several accessories begin rolling out across Europe. The console itself arrives in autumn.

Summary

  • Switch 2 autumn 2026, Europe only: A revised model with a user-replaceable battery arrives this autumn in the EU, UK, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Oman, and South Africa — no word on global availability.
  • Battery drops 1%, weight rises 10g: The new battery is 5,172mAh, down from 5,220mAh. The console goes from 401g to 411g without Joy-Cons.
  • Joy-Con 2 replaceable batteries too: Included with the revised console and available separately later.
  • No functionality changes: Nintendo is explicit — the revised hardware is identical in performance to the current model.
  • Once old stock sells out, there’s no going back: You won’t be able to choose between the current and revised models once existing inventory clears.

The Regulation Behind the Change

The EU’s Right to Repair Directive took effect July 31, 2026. The EU Batteries Regulation follows in February 2027. Both laws push manufacturers to design devices with batteries users can swap without specialized tools or a trip to a service center. Nintendo is complying — though it’s worth noting that the original Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED won’t get replaceable batteries at all. Those three models stop being sold in Europe entirely from mid-February 2027.

The Trade-Offs Are Real but Minor

The battery shrinks by 48mAh — roughly 1%. Nintendo says this has no meaningful impact on performance, and on the numbers, that’s accurate. A 1% capacity difference won’t change how long a game runs in any measurable way. The weight increase of 10g (14g with Joy-Cons attached) is similarly small in isolation, but worth knowing if you hold the console for extended handheld sessions.

The Switch 2 Pro Controller gets a different deal — its battery shrinks by a more significant 16% to 897mAh, though it ends up about 7 grams lighter as a result. The GameCube Controller for Switch 2 actually gains a 5% larger battery. Nintendo 64 Controller for Switch adds 1 gram with no battery change.

What This Means for Buyers

If you already own a Switch 2, nothing changes. The revised model doesn’t replace yours — it replaces new stock on shelves. Battery replacement kits will be sold separately through Nintendo Store in Europe once the revised hardware is available. Pricing for those kits hasn’t been confirmed yet.

For anyone planning to buy new in Europe after autumn, you’ll automatically get the replaceable battery version — you won’t have a choice between models once old inventory is gone. For buyers in North America, Japan, and other global markets, Nintendo has not announced any equivalent revision.
