What This Actually Means for Users
OxygenOS built its reputation on being a clean, fast, near-stock Android experience with thoughtful customizations. ColorOS is Oppo’s software — more feature-dense, more visually distinct from stock Android, and familiar to anyone who uses an Oppo phone. The two have shared more code than most users realized for several years, but the surface-level experience is still noticeably different.
The voluntary nature of the update is the one genuine relief. If you’re an OnePlus 13 owner who loves OxygenOS, you don’t have to switch immediately. But security patches will eventually require the ColorOS update — staying on an unsupported OxygenOS version indefinitely isn’t realistic long-term.
OnePlus says the consolidation “enables streamlined software development, accelerated update delivery, improved software quality, and better use of shared engineering.” In plain language: one codebase is cheaper than two. For users, the honest question is whether ColorOS 17 is good enough to make the difference irrelevant.
