If there’s one movie genre I’ve grown most fond of over the years, it’s Westerns. I grew up mostly watching old sci-fi and war movies, so when I finally dove into the genre, I was immediately blown away by just how breathtaking some of these films are. Classics like The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, The Magnificent Seven, and Stagecoach quickly became some of my all-time favorites.
One thing I’ve noticed, though, is that many of my favorite Westerns have one thing in common: Clint Eastwood. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of legendary actors who helped define the genre, including John Wayne and Charles Bronson. But there’s something about Eastwood’s distinct look, quiet confidence, and commanding screen presence that sets him apart. Whether it’s A Fistful of Dollars, Hang ‘Em High, or Unforgiven, he has a way of elevating every Western he’s in.
One of my favorite Clint Eastwood Westerns, though, is For a Few Dollars More, the second film in Sergio Leone’s Dollars Trilogy.
Released in 1965, the film sees Eastwood reprise his iconic role as the Man with No Name, this time alongside Lee Van Cleef, who plays Colonel Douglas Mortimer. The two bounty hunters reluctantly join forces to track down a ruthless outlaw, creating one of the most memorable pairings in Western history. It’s another unforgettable performance from Eastwood in what is widely considered one of the greatest Westerns ever made, and one of his best performances.
