Terra Drone Develops “Signal Recovery Feature” for Indoor Inspection Drone “Terra Xross 1” in Collaboration with Chevron and Shell via DeepStar Consortium


Terra Drone Corporation, a leading drone and Urban Air Mobility (UAM) technology company headquartered in Japan, has successfully implemented a new “Signal Recovery Feature” for “Terra Xross 1,” its proprietary indoor inspection drone developed and manufactured in Japan.

This advanced capability has been developed under the Nippon Foundation and DeepStar project, leveraging strategic feedback from its member companies, including Chevron and Shell.

The “Terra Xross 1” features outstanding flight stability powered by both LiDAR and visual sensors, combined with exceptional cost performance—offering high-end capabilities at approximately one-third the cost of conventional indoor visual inspection drones. 

By significantly lowering financial and technical barriers, it has accelerated the adoption of safe and efficient indoor drone inspections across various critical infrastructure sectors.

To ensure the product directly addresses demanding on-site requirements, Terra Drone participated in the joint technological development program established by The Nippon Foundation and DeepStar.

DeepStar is a globally recognized offshore technology development consortium whose members include major oil and gas companies such as Chevron and Shell. Through the strategic partnership between The Nippon Foundation and DeepStar, the program aims to foster technological innovation, enhance safety, and promote decarbonization in the energy sector.

Through this global framework, Terra Drone worked closely with the consortium’s core members, integrating their rich operational expertise and frontline feedback into the engineering process of the Japanese-made drone, Terra Xross 1.

Drone operations in indoor, confined, or GPS-denied environments inherently carry the risk of signal degradation or complete loss of communication. 

By introducing the “Signal Recovery Feature”, Terra Drone mitigates the risk of signal disconnection, allowing operators to conduct wide-area inspections safely and confidently without risking asset or equipment loss.

Feature Overview: “Signal Recovery Feature”

“Signal Recovery Feature” is an automated safety mechanism triggered when the drone loses communication with the controller during flight. Upon disconnection, the drone automatically flies back to recover the signal connection.

In indoor facilities, storage tanks, boiler rooms, and underground structures where radio signals naturally weaken or drop, this function eliminates the risk of flyaways or lost equipment.Consequently, industries can safely execute long-distance, deep-range inspections with peace of mind.
