KLM Defense Launches Vantrel Series, a One-Man-Portable Tactical ISR Platform With Sniper-Grade Zoom and Day/Thermal Fusion – sUAS News


The compact small UAV line packs 30x hybrid zoom and a stitched day-thermal sensor option into a single-operator kit designed to launch in minutes and fit in a backpack

KLM Defense has introduced the Vantrel Series, a compact tactical ISR line built for the operator working alone rather than the crew working a mobile command post. Where the company’s Sentinel platforms are sized for persistent, team-operated overwatch, the Vantrel Series folds into a footprint of roughly 231 × 231 × 57 mm and is designed to be carried, unpacked, and airborne by a single soldier or first responder.

The series launches with two models sharing one compact small UAV airframe. The Vantrel 30 carries the Sniper30 gimbal, an 8MP/4K sensor with 30x hybrid zoom that lets an operator identify a target at distance without closing on it or exposing the aircraft’s position. The Vantrel Duo swaps in the Spectra384 gimbal, pairing a 5MP/2K day sensor with a 384×288, 30Hz thermal imager and a stitched day+thermal view mode, extending the same reconnaissance profile into low-light and no-light conditions.

Both aircraft are rated for a 34-minute flight envelope, a 21,000 ft launch altitude and 27,000 ft service ceiling, and operate from the same KAT7 Pro ground control unit, keeping the training and muscle-memory footprint identical across the line. Airframes are carbon-fibre-and-polyurethane construction, IP55-rated and MIL-STD-810G tested for -20°C to +55°C operation. All-up weight is 1.74 kg for the Vantrel 30 and 1.78 kg for the Vantrel Duo, keeping both variants light enough for a single operator to carry, launch, and recover without support equipment.

For units that need to hold a position and watch, that combination of altitude performance and low weight matters as much as the optics. Border outposts, checkpoint security details, and disaster-response teams have historically had to choose between a system small enough for one person to carry and one with the optical reach to be useful at a distance — the Vantrel Series is built to remove that trade-off, putting a sniper-scope-class sensor on an airframe that still fits in a single pack.

The 21,000 ft launch altitude is a deliberate design target rather than a headline figure. Units operating in high-altitude terrain routinely find that platforms rated at sea level lose meaningful endurance, payload margin, or the ability to launch at all once they are taken above a few thousand metres. The Vantrel Series is specified to take off from ground stations already sitting at altitude, which extends its usable envelope into mountain sectors, high-desert borders, and elevated observation posts where lighter aircraft have historically struggled.

Sensor choice is the primary distinction between the two variants, and it maps to two different mission profiles. The Vantrel 30’s 30x hybrid zoom is built for standoff identification in daylight — reading vehicle markings, counting personnel, or assessing a structure from a distance at which the aircraft itself is difficult to see or hear. The Vantrel Duo trades some daylight magnification for round-the-clock capability: its stitched day+thermal view overlays the thermal channel onto the visible image, so an operator tracking a heat signature retains the visual context needed to interpret what that signature is doing, rather than switching between two separate feeds.

Durability specifications reflect the same single-operator assumption. An aircraft carried in a pack alongside the rest of a soldier’s load is handled differently from one transported in a hard case in a vehicle, and the IP55 rating and MIL-STD-810G test profile are intended to cover that reality — rain, dust, vibration, and a temperature band spanning -20°C to +55°C. Both models fold without tools and are designed to move from packed to airborne in minutes, with no assembly step that requires setting the aircraft down on clean ground.

“The Vantrel Series exists for the operator who doesn’t have a vehicle, a second set of hands, or ten minutes to spare — just a backpack and a mission,” said Mr. Nagesh Sharma, Co-Founder of KLM Defense. “Sniper-grade zoom and thermal fusion used to mean a platform too big to carry alone. We built Vantrel to put that same look-first, stay-unseen capability into a single operator’s hands.”
