If you want to cultivate a healthy appreciation for rain, try living without it. Colorado is in the midst of a catastrophically dry year, the kind that drains reservoirs and leaves the understory in the forest shriveled. As the southwestern monsoon season has finally arrived over the past few weeks, I’ve found myself making excuses to go out in the rain—for the smell, for the cool temperatures, for the novelty of feeling the drops on my skin.
