If you want to cultivate a healthy appreciation for rain, try living without it. Colorado is in the midst of a catastrophically dry year, the kind that drains reservoirs and leaves the understory in the forest shriveled. As the southwestern monsoon season has finally arrived over the past few weeks, I’ve found myself making excuses to go out in the rain—for the smell, for the cool temperatures, for the novelty of feeling the drops on my skin.

Appreciating the rain is a lot easier when you have a shell you can count on, and the Mountain Hardwear Premonition UL Jacket was our favorite jacket of the season for men. (If you prefer a ladies’ cut, our top pick there, the Outdoor Research Aspire 3L Jacket, is currently on sale for 25 percent off too.) The Premonition offers the best of both worlds: The 20-denier, 3-layer Pertex fabric is light (11.2 oz) and packable, but was still burly enough to stand up to Alaskan bushwhacking in testing. It proved to be good at its main job, too, keeping our tester dry in what he described as “complete hypothermia weather.”

Right now, the jacket is available in small, large, and XL. Need a different size? You can grab the anorak version, which comes in at just 8.9 ounces, for an eye-popping 70 percent off.
