It’s been a busy week for news out of Washington over the past few days. You, like me, might be experiencing a severe case of regulatory fatigue. You might also be increasingly wondering if it’s a good idea to keep buying and flying foreign-made (which includes DJI) drones, given new developments out of the FCC.
First came the news that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) officially revoked equipment authorizations for Odyssey Robot LLC after uncovering false statements regarding domestic assembly. Then came an FCC public notice (DA 26-832) proposing to block the importation and marketing of Anzu Robotics hardware.
And floating over all of it is an August 7 warning from DJI, cautioning that the FCC is actively considering rules that would cut off future imports and sales of previously authorized foreign drones. That includes popular enterprise and consumer platforms equipped with thermal, LiDAR, or spraying capabilities.
DJI and the Drone Advocacy Alliance are pleading with the public to file public comments with the FCC before the September 2, 2026 deadline. (Info directly from the DAA on how to submit public comments here.)
Filing comments is important, and every pilot should make their voice heard. But on a practical level, a lot of drone pilots are rightfully wondering: What should I actually do about buying drones today? Should you buy the DJI model you’ve been eyeing before it disappears? Should you panic-buy backup parts? Or is it time to jump ship to a domestic alternative?
Here is a practical roadmap for how drone pilots should move ahead.
1. Don’t panic, but do audit your current fleet
The single most important detail in the FCC’s latest filings is one that often gets lost in panic-inducing headlines: The FCC is not proposing to ground or confiscate drones you already own.
Under the framework established in the FCC’s proposed rules, previously authorized devices already in the hands of consumers and operators will remain legal to fly. The proposed bans focus strictly on future importation, advertising, distribution and new sales.
If you already own a fleet of DJI or Anzu drones that perform well for your business, you do not need to ground them tomorrow. However, you should perform a fleet health audit:
- Assess lifecycle: How many flight hours do your primary airframes have left?
- Check battery health: Batteries degrade over time regardless of software bans.
- Identify single points of failure: Do you have a secondary backup drone if your primary aircraft suffers a crash next month?
2. Should you buy a DJI drone right now?
The answer depends heavily on who you are and how you use your drone.
For commercial operators (Part 107 revenue drivers)
If your business relies on a specific DJI model like a Mavic 3 Enterprise, a Matrice 350 RTK, or a FlyCart — and you plan to rely on that platform for the next 12 to 24 months — buying new units to either expand your fleet or as backups for existing ones now rather than waiting is the smart move here.
Why? If the FCC finalized rules prohibiting future importation, supply chains for new units will dry up rapidly. While existing stock on store shelves in the U.S. can theoretically be sold until inventory runs out, prices on secondary markets will inevitably spike, and distributor inventory will vanish.
Securing a primary or backup airframe today guarantees you have the tool you need to fulfill client contracts through 2027.
For hobbyists and recreational pilots
If you are buying a drone purely for fun or casual photography, there is less of a need to panic-buy. While new iterations of consumer lines (like a theoretical future Mini or Air model) may face massive hurdles reaching the U.S. market, currently available consumer models are plentiful on the secondary market. Of course, the risk here is if you really want to buy a used drone.
Unless you really cannot be bothered to buy used drones (and there are some risks of buying used drones!), I think it’s worth the risk to wait. My general rule of thumb for hobbyists is that if you want a Mini or an Air 3S, buy it only because you truly need it today, not out of fear that it will vanish tomorrow.
3. Stock up on critical consumables (especially batteries)
There is, though, something I WOULD panic buy: spare parts. Even if you already own your drones, a hardware ban creates a massive headache around supply chain friction for replacement parts. Unlike what I said above, this feels more justified because you aren’t so much speculatively buying, considering you are buying parts for a drone you already owned.
DJI explicitly warned that if importation bans take effect on previously cleared products, “covered replacement components could also become harder, or impossible, to obtain”.
If you operate a fleet, I would consider buying backups of:
- Propellers: These are cheap, essential, and easy to store — so not much to lose here.
- Proprietary batteries: Unlike your regular AAA battery that is platform agnostic, most drone batteries are specific to the actual drone model. And you definitely can’t use bad batteries (never use a battery that has swollen or is otherwise degraded).
- Payload cables and remote controller accessories: Again on the proprietary front, buy backups of any specialized cord or module that isn’t a generic USB-C.
4. Begin testing non-foreign alternatives (even if you don’t buy yet)

Alas, the writing on the wall is clear. Regardless of how the FCC’s current comment period plays out, the long-term regulatory direction of the U.S. government is becoming increasingly hostile toward foreign-produced UAS platforms and white-label workarounds.
Especially if you own a drone business, relying 100% on a foreign hardware supply chain for your livelihood is becoming a riskier business strategy with each passing month.
Don’t panic buy, but DO actively research, demo, and test domestic or NDAA-compliant alternatives. You don’t need to sell your DJI fleet today, but you should brace for a “Plan B” ecosystem identified. More specifically, consider:
- American and NDAA-compliant platforms: American drone companies include Skydio, BRINC, Red Cat/Teal, Freefly Systems, and ModalAI.
- Modular airframes: These are systems that allow you to swap sensors and cameras independently of the underlying airframe, and could be useful if you can no longer get certain parts.
- Software-agnostic workflows: Ensure your photogrammetry, thermal analysis, or mapping software (like Pix4D, DroneDeploy, or SkyeBrowse) isn’t locked into a single drone manufacturer.
And of course, do still share your voice! The FCC is specifically asking for public comment on economic and supply chain impacts, explicitly asking whether “comparable U.S.-made alternatives exist” and whether proposed restrictions sweep in civilian tools that aren’t actually “military-grade”.
When you submit your comment to the FCC before the September 2, 2026 deadline, it’s generally considered best practice to skip the emotional arguments and focus on concrete business realities. To do that, make sure you:
- Detail your workflow: Explain exactly how you use thermal or LiDAR tools for public safety, agricultural inspections, or search and rescue.
- Provide economic data: State how much a forced transition to alternative hardware would cost your small business.
- Highlight hardware gaps: Frankly state whether a domestic alternative exists that meets your specific payload, weight, or price requirements.
