Positive SurferSEO review: 7,000 words later, here’s what it does best


Here we are on the verge of my 3rd review! I’ve already reviewed SerpStat and SE Ranking, and have decided to review SurferSEO (or is it Positive Surfer?) next.

After being acquired by the French company Positive Group they are now referring to themselves as ” AI visibility platform for maximum organic growth”. And yes, we should call it Positive Surfer, apparently.

So this isn’t a multi-product SEO platform, but one which wants to position itself as AI visibility platform.

Positive Surfer helps you decide what to write, optimize it against competing pages, and keep it visible after publication. Its best-known feature, Content Editor, analyzes the pages already ranking for a target query and turns that data into practical recommendations covering topics, terminology, structure and length.

Surfer has also expanded into content audits, topical planning, AI-assisted writing and monitoring whether a brand appears in Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Claude. It is not quite an all-purpose SEO suite like Semrush or Ahrefs, but rather a platform built around the entire content optimization process.

Let’s have a proper look at what it can do!

As always, we first take a look at the policies they have.

Surfer’s legal pages disclose an unusually intrusive visitor-identification practice and contain several privacy and consumer-contract clauses that deserve scrutiny. The most serious question is whether Surfer’s data partners connect browsing activity with email addresses or online profiles before obtaining valid consent. Its regulations also appear outdated, internally inconsistent and potentially misleading about consumers’ complaint and subscription rights. Something that they need to take into consideration.

Moving forward. There is a free trial available, so i took that.

Immediately after activating the trial, Surfer does not throw you into a dashboard filled with reports and unfamiliar controls. It begins with a short onboarding form asking who you are, what you primarily want to accomplish and where you first heard about Surfer. The first two answers could reasonably help tailor the experience, while the final question is plainly there to measure Surfer’s own marketing, with options including software review sites, YouTube, word of mouth, ChatGPT and social media. There is no visible option to skip this step, and the Continue button remains unavailable until the questions are answered. It takes less than a minute, though, and the interface is clean enough that it never feels like much of an obstacle.

I was a bit annoyed that i couldn’t continue with my trial without being interrupted, but I guess this is how they “roll”.

Surfer’s seven-day trial is technically free, but it comes with strings attached. You must provide valid billing details at checkout, and the selected paid subscription begins automatically unless you cancel before the trial expires. This places the burden on you to remember the deadline or risk an unwanted charge. After the amazing trial experience I’ve seen at SE Ranking, I must say this is a bit disappointing.

The trial is also limited to brand-new accounts with no previous Surfer subscription history, making it unavailable to former customers who want to reassess the platform. This seems good practic and prevents abuse.

My read is that Surfer’s pricing is not outrageous for a premium content optimizer, but this conversion screen is noticeably more aggressive than most competitors. Before we have properly used the product, yearly billing is already selected, Pro is heavily highlighted, and the cheaper Discovery plan is missing from the main comparison.

The clever part is that Surfer’s three visible “monthly” prices are really annual commitments:

  • Standard: €1,188 upfront
  • Pro: €2,184 upfront
  • Peace of Mind: €3,588 upfront

The €49 Discovery plan, which would reduce the commitment to €588, is placed farther down the pricing page under “Start smaller.” Pro also costs €83 more per displayed month than Standard while retaining the same 360-document allowance. Most of the upgrade pays for daily multi-platform AI tracking, more brand workspaces and additional workflow features, rather than more content capacity.

Onboarding

Anyway, I’ve added my CC details and I’ll make sure to finish my review in time so i don’t get accidentally charged, ha ha. And yeah, it said “Pay” when you are just trying out, so I think the team needs to review a little bit this onboarding funnel as it’s definitely costing them a few users.

What’s funny is I’ve actually received an invoice to my email with the 219 euros appearing as being charged, so they should definitely fix this incosistency.

The next onboarding step asks you to create a workspace for the website or brand you want to manage. Surfer recommends connecting Google Search Console, which allows it to select relevant keywords automatically, use your real traffic and performance data, and suggest content based on its topical analysis. If you do not want to grant Search Console access during a short trial, you can simply enter your website URL instead. This is a welcome alternative, although Surfer will naturally have less first-party data to work with.

Once Google Search Console is connected, Surfer detects the website properties associated with that account and asks you to choose which one should become the workspace. You then select the target country and language, give the workspace a recognizable name, and continue. The location setting is more important than it first appears because it determines the market Surfer will use for keyword and content analysis, so it should reflect your intended audience rather than your physical location. If the correct website is missing, you can connect another Google account or bypass Search Console and start with a URL.

I went ahead and used one of my websites that i still have access to that gets fairly decent traffic. It’s not a business, not an ecommerce, just a content site.

After i’ve connected my website, Surfer next asks you to create a Brand Knowledge profile by entering the brand name and describing the business in more detail. This can include what the company does, its audience, positioning, preferred voice, competitors and any other context that should influence its recommendations and generated content. The information can be edited later from the workspace settings, so the setup does not need to be perfect on the first attempt. However, the quality of Surfer’s personalization will depend heavily on how specific and accurate the information you provide here is. It also helped that it quicly auto-completed that section with AI, so if you agree with the description, just let it stick.

So we are finally inside the dashboard, let’s have a tour and see what Positive Surfer can do.

Positive Surfer SEO dashboard review

Once onboarding is complete, Surfer opens a dashboard that combines performance monitoring with suggested next actions. At the top, you can see organic click data imported from Google Search Console and compare performance with the previous 30 days. Surfer also encourages new users to watch a short tutorial and begin a Content Audit, which analyzes existing pages to identify potential improvements and quicker optimization opportunities.

The Brand Performance section separates conventional search traffic from AI visibility. The traffic card shows recent click trends, while the AI Visibility card asks you to add prompts that Surfer can monitor across supported AI platforms. This allows you to track whether your brand appears in answers to commercially or topically relevant questions rather than relying only on Google rankings.

Further down, Surfer generates a list of recommended articles based on the website and brand context provided during setup. Each idea receives a numerical score and can be opened as a new writing task. The dashboard also contains tutorials, product updates and occasional promotions. Overall, it behaves more like a guided starting point than a traditional analytics dashboard, telling you what to do next while keeping the deeper tools one step away.

Now it’s time to have a look at each individual feature.

Recommendations

Based on the data it got from GSC it can now suggest you some keyword ideas. It shows existing pages to optimize, new content ideas and potential mentions. In this workspace, Surfer generated 106 content ideas that it believes could reinforce existing coverage or expand the site’s topical authority.

Each recommendation is organized around a main keyword and a cluster of related terms. Surfer displays the apparent search intent, keyword difficulty, estimated search volume and its own recommendation score. You can sort and filter the list, search for a particular keyword, reveal suggested article titles or click “Create” to send an idea directly into the Content Editor.

It is a useful starting point for finding topics, but the recommendations should not become an automatic editorial calendar. Some supposedly low-difficulty opportunities in our list had keyword difficulty scores close to or above 60, while others were broad or highly time-sensitive. Surfer’s score is best treated as a prioritization signal rather than a prediction that the website will rank.

I didn’t find much value in this particular feature but maybe it can be useful to beginners.

Content Editor

The Content Editor first asks what kind of writing or optimization task you want to begin rather than dropping you into a blank document. You can start from one of Surfer’s recommendations, enter your own target keyword, select an existing page identified by Content Audit or choose a subject from the Topical Map. This connects the writing workflow with the research and auditing tools elsewhere in the platform.

You can also import existing content or use the “New Content” menu to begin a new project directly. The distinction is useful: importing is suited to a draft you already have, while Content Audit is intended for improving published material. Overall, the page acts as a project launcher rather than the editor itself, helping users define the source and purpose of the content before writing begins.

I went ahead and selected a URL actually from Surfer’s site:

It worked for a while in what it calls “Deep Research”. The process seems to have two parallel tracks. Its AI Search analysis generates relevant prompts, collects answers from ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, AI Mode and Perplexity, and then calculates guidelines intended to improve the content’s visibility across those systems. At the same time, Surfer retrieves and crawls traditional Google search results to calculate its Content Score and conventional SEO recommendations.

This is an optimization research stage rather than deep research in the journalistic or academic sense. Surfer is studying search results and AI-generated answers to build a content brief, but it is not necessarily verifying facts or producing a trustworthy source dossier. Writers will still need to conduct their own research, check claims and select authoritative sources before publishing.

It seems to have imported the content of that specific URL completely and I … guess that was the expected behaviour? I haven’t used this tool before, so I’m assuming this is exactly what was supposed to appear:

Nowo, once we are inside the Content Editor, Surfer behaves like a collaborative word processor with SEO and AI-search guidance built around it. You can format headings and paragraphs, create lists, add links, images and tables, and use the Ask Surfy assistant when you want AI help with the draft. Comments, sharing controls and document history also make it possible for writers, editors and clients to work on the same piece.

The right-hand panel evaluates the article while you write. Surfer now separates its traditional SEO score from an AI Search score and combines them into an overall Content Score. The accompanying workflow is divided into five stages: researching and creating the outline, writing and optimizing, adding internal links, completing a pre-publication review, and publishing or exporting the finished article. You can also add the subject as a prompt in the AI Tracker to monitor whether AI systems cite the content after publication.

The Auto-Optimize button can apply recommended changes more quickly, but it should be used carefully. A higher Surfer score is an optimization benchmark, not proof that an article is accurate, original or likely to rank. Automatically chasing the score can also introduce unnecessary wording and make the article resemble the same competing pages Surfer analyzed.

We went ahead and clicked the Auto-Optimize button.

Surfer begins editing the article section by section rather than merely displaying recommendations. A progress bar shows which section is currently being processed, while the sidebar tracks the SEO entities and AI Search information Surfer wants the article to cover. Terms are color-coded to distinguish concepts already addressed from those that remain missing or underrepresented, and a separate view shows which entities appear in headings.

Once processing is complete, you can review the proposed changes, accept or reject them and continue editing manually. You can also cancel the operation while it is running. This makes Auto-Optimize faster than inserting every recommended concept yourself, but it should not be treated as a safe one-click improvement. Surfer may add awkward phrases, dilute the writer’s voice or introduce material that does not belong in the article simply because competing pages mention it. Every change still needs an editorial and factual review.

As you saw, for this test, we fed Surfer one of … Surfer’s own articles about non-commodity content. Surfer examined Surfer’s work and, with admirable confidence, decided that Surfer had not optimized Surfer nearly enough.

Once Auto-Optimize finished, the article appeared with tracked changes. New wording was highlighted in green, suggested deletions were crossed out, and we could accept or reject each edit before saving. The overall Content Score jumped from 60 to 89, with the SEO score rising from 71 to 80 and the AI Search score leaping from 49 to 98. Surfer also added almost 300 words to an article that was already more than twice as long as its own recommended range.

There is something wonderfully circular about this result. Surfer created the recommendations, rewrote its own article to satisfy them and then awarded itself 29 additional points. It is a little like writing your own exam, marking your own answers and announcing that you have improved dramatically. The feature can still save time, but the score increase proves alignment with Surfer’s model, not necessarily that the article became clearer, more original or more likely to rank.

Ok, let’s now try to create a similar article on the same topic but not by importing an URL, but by telling it the main kwds we are targeting. Once again, it started working in the same Deep Research program. However, this time, it asked me what type of content i want to create before moving into production:

The available templates cover long-form blog posts, landing pages, comparisons and listicles, alongside ecommerce product and category pages, local service pages and a special “LLM Optimized” format. The selected template helps determine the structure and purpose of the generated article, so Surfer does not treat every keyword as another generic blog post.

You can also turn one of your best-performing pages into a reusable custom template. This could be valuable for teams that regularly publish content in a consistent format, although copying the structure of a successful page does not guarantee that the structure caused its success. But I see this being very valuable for ecommerce stores, or local businesses; so this one gets a thumbs up from my side! I’ve selected blog post and maybe in a future version i will be looking at other content types.

This is only the third step of the generation process. Surfer still asks for context and instructions before letting you choose the writing mode, giving you two more opportunities to shape the output before it begins generating the article.

The Context and Instructions step determines what Surfer should use beyond the target keyword. It automatically includes ten sources gathered from Google results and AI Search, while the Brand Knowledge option brings in information about the intended audience, products and competitors. You can then select a saved writing voice and either accept or replace Surfer’s suggested word count, which is calculated from competing pages.

You can also provide up to five additional URLs and explain how each source should be used. The instruction box allows you to specify the perspective, required points, products to mention, structure, conclusion and anything the generator should avoid.

This is arguably the most important stage if you want something other than a polished summary of competing pages. The competitor-based word count is guidance rather than an SEO requirement, and the supplied sources are still inputs rather than automatically verified evidence. Adding original observations, first-hand data and precise editorial instructions here gives Surfer a better chance of producing something genuinely distinctive.

Next you have the option of writing yourself and then asking for AI help. We went for the second option directly; and it took around 2-3 minutes for the article to ready.

As we can see, the output is a complete, editable first draft rather than a simple outline. Surfer combines the target keyword, search and AI research, selected content type, Brand Knowledge, preferred voice and custom instructions to produce a headline, section structure and finished paragraphs. The brand-specific positioning in the draft shows that the information provided during onboarding is actively influencing the generated content.

The article arrives with an overall Content Score of 95, including an SEO score of 99 and an AI Search score of 90. From here, you can rewrite the text manually or highlight a passage and ask Surfy to edit it. Surfer says its assistant understands the brand profile, competing articles and the optimization guidelines attached to the document. The remaining workflow covers internal links, pre-publication checks and publishing or exporting the article.

Despite the impressive scores, the output is not publication-ready. The generated draft contains precise statistics, dates, examples and linked studies that sound authoritative but still require independent verification. A score of 95 means the article closely satisfies Surfer’s optimization model; it does not confirm that every claim is true or that the writing is ready to be published. Make sure to not make the mistake of publishing AI content or AI assisted content without editing.

There is also a research panel that lets you switch between three views: Competitors, Questions and Notes. You can expand individual competing pages to inspect their heading structures, collect questions worth answering and keep your own research notes beside the draft. Surfer can also produce an AI-generated outline based on the selected template and insert it into the article with one click.

This is handy for spotting gaps quickly, although competitor outlines are best used as evidence of what already exists, not as instructions for creating another version of it.

Final quality checks

The Pre-Publish Review includes a readability score and translates it into an estimated education level, which is more useful than receiving another mysterious number with no explanation. You can also run a plagiarism check and ask Surfer to analyze the article’s AI readability.

These checks catch different problems. Readability tells you whether the writing may be unnecessarily difficult, while the plagiarism checker looks for copied material. Neither can tell you whether the article is insightful, unfortunately. That part remains stubbornly human.

Meta tags and export options

Surfer lets you write the SEO title and meta description before exporting, with visible limits of 70 characters for the title and 156 for the description. It is a small addition, but it avoids the familiar situation where the article reaches WordPress and everyone suddenly remembers that nobody wrote the metadata.

A WordPress site can be connected and managed from the workspace. Without that connection, the finished article can be copied or downloaded instead. Surfer can also repurpose the article into a social media post, saving another small round of “Can someone turn this into LinkedIn copy?” after publication.

Finally, you can update the article’s status once it is published or leave it in progress if the work is not quite finished. None of these features is revolutionary on its own, but together they make the transition from draft to CMS noticeably less messy.

For me, Surfer seems like more of an AI-assisted writer than SEO tool

Overall, Surfer’s Content Editor feels less like a writing app and more like an SEO production line. It takes you from competitor research and outlining through writing, optimization, quality checks and finally export. Everything is connected, so you rarely have to leave the page or wonder what the next step should be. For content teams producing articles regularly, that structure can save a surprising amount of time.

The split between traditional SEO and AI Search guidance is genuinely useful, while Surfy and Auto-Optimize make it easy to improve a weak draft quickly. The problem begins when the score becomes the objective. Surfer is excellent at telling you how closely an article matches its model, but it cannot decide whether an added paragraph is genuinely useful, whether a statistic is trustworthy or whether the writing still sounds like you. So make sure to do some extra work before hitting that publish button.

I would use the Content Editor as a research assistant, optimization layer and final checklist, but not as the person in charge of the article. It can build the frame, identify what you missed and handle some of the boring work. The experience, judgment and original ideas still need to come from the writer.

Moving forward.

I found an interesting feature, called Activity Log, that might be very useful especially when SurferSEO is used by a team, or if there’s a manager. It allows you to check the activity of team members.


It’s time we move to the SEO part of the dashboard.

SEO Performance

Surfer’s Performance module is essentially a reporting and prioritization layer built on Google Search Console data. It displays clicks, impressions, average CTR and average position, with changes against the previous equivalent period. The dataset can be segmented by date, country, device, URL and keyword, while individual metrics can be enabled or removed from the trend chart.

The ranking distribution groups search visibility into three useful buckets: Top 3, positions 4 to 10 and positions 11 to 20. This makes it easier to separate established rankings from realistic optimization opportunities. Keywords in positions 4 to 10 may respond to improved content, titles or internal linking, while positions 11 to 20 often require more substantial work.

Separate Pages and Keywords tables report:

  • Clicks
  • Impressions
  • CTR
  • Average position
  • Period-over-period movement

The tables can be sorted by metric and direction. Common diagnostic patterns include high impressions with low CTR, ranking gains without click growth, declining pages with stable demand and keywords already close to page one.

Average position should be treated carefully because it aggregates multiple queries, locations and devices. Surfer’s filters are therefore important when diagnosing changes rather than merely reporting them.

You can also define a traffic target. Surfer calculates current progress, remaining days and the average clicks required to reach it.

There is no additional ranking database here. It is Search Console data presented in a cleaner workflow, with the practical advantage of helping users identify which pages and queries should be monitored, audited or re-optimized next.

Compared with Google Search Console, Surfer Performance is cleaner but considerably shallower. It uses the same core data, then adds position buckets, traffic goals and a clearer route from “this page is slipping” to “let’s audit and update it.” Search Console itself remains better for technical analysis because it supports advanced comparisons, regex filtering, search types, search appearance and data exports. Google documents those controls here, while Surfer positions its dashboard mainly as a way to spot winners, declines and optimization opportunities.

From what I’m aware, Semrush goes further by combining Search Console with GA4 and its own keyword database, adding engagement, conversion and third-party ranking data. Ahrefs is also much stronger for dedicated rank tracking across locations, devices, competitors and SERP features.

However, the tool remains useful for writers and content teams deciding what to update next, but it is not a serious replacement for Search Console or a full rank tracker. It is basically Search Console wearing a Surfer jacket. Nice jacket, same body underneath.

Content Audit

Surfer’s Content Audit turns Google Search Console data into a content-refresh queue. It takes the last 30 complete days, compares them with the previous 30 days, assigns each page a traffic-driving main keyword and analyzes the current SERP to calculate an SEO Score. The table combines that score with position, clicks, impressions and CTR. You can filter for rank drops, Surfer recommendations, metric ranges or workflow status, then search, add pages manually, export everything to CSV or send a page directly into the Content Editor.

Surfer classifies pages with a score below 70 and positions between 4 and 20 as likely optimization opportunities. That is a sensible starting rule, but not an instruction to attack every red gauge. In our audit, one page ranked first with an SEO Score of 29, while another averaged position 1.4 with a score of only 15. Clearly, Google had not received Surfer’s memo. I would prioritize rank declines, high-impression pages with weak CTR and URLs sitting just outside the top three, then use the SEO Score as supporting evidence. On news websites, I would also verify the automatically selected main keyword because traffic can shift between stories and queries very quickly.

How it compares

Google Search Console provides the original and more flexible performance data, but it does not assign content scores, analyze competing pages or create an optimization workflow. Clearscope’s Content Inventory is more advanced for long-term portfolio management because it includes seasonal content-decay analysis, 12-month trends, recurring rescoring, custom views and weekly alerts. We are working on a review very soon.

SE Ranking goes deeper when auditing an individual page, checking titles, headings, uniqueness, Core Web Vitals, JavaScript, CSS, backlinks and SERP competitors. We went over this in our recent review. Interestingly, Semrush has discontinued its dedicated Content Audit tool, leaving its more technical Site Audit and On Page SEO Checker instead.

My verdict is that Surfer offers one of the cleaner workflows for deciding what to refresh and immediately opening it for optimization. It is less sophisticated and technical than other tools but it connects performance data with actual content work exceptionally well. Just remember that the green gauge is not a Google ranking factor, regardless of how confidently it stares at you.

Topical Map

Surfer’s Topical Map turns existing Google Search Console data into a domain-level content plan. It clusters the keywords your site already appears for, measures current coverage and then finds semantically related “neighbor” clusters that you have not covered yet.

The table view separates broad topic clusters from individual article opportunities. For each cluster, you can see average keyword difficulty, combined search volume and how many suggested articles are already covered. Each article idea includes:

  • A main keyword
  • Search intent
  • Number of related keywords
  • Keyword difficulty
  • Search volume
  • Current ranking position
  • Covered or uncovered status

You can filter and search the list, compare competitor coverage, export the data or send an idea directly into the Content Editor. The export menu can also generate a cannibalization report showing where multiple URLs rank for the same keywords.

The visual map displays clusters according to semantic proximity. Central clusters are closest to the site’s strongest topic, while those farther away are progressively less related. Large hexagons represent topics and smaller ones represent individual articles. Colors can show coverage or average difficulty, making white space quite literal for once. It looks slightly like an alien radar system, but it does make gaps easier to explain to a client.

Still, 921 suggested topics are not an editorial strategy. Search volume, semantic similarity and low difficulty do not automatically make a topic commercially relevant, fresh or useful to the audience. In our map, older product queries appeared alongside current ones, which matters for a fast-moving technology publisher. I would use business relevance and audience value first, then coverage, intent, difficulty and volume to prioritize the remaining ideas.

How it compares against other similar tools

Google Search Console provides the source performance data but does not cluster queries, calculate coverage, add intent or discover neighboring topics. Surfer adds that planning layer, although it also inherits Search Console’s limitations and works best on established websites with enough query data. Surfer itself recommends using Topic Research instead for small or new domains.

Semrush’s Keyword Strategy Builder is more flexible and scalable. It can analyze up to 10,000 keywords, accept imported or competitor keyword lists, organize them into pillar pages and subpages, and send them into rank tracking or content tools. Surfer is less configurable, but better at showing how a real domain’s existing coverage connects with the next articles it could publish.

Ahrefs takes a narrower approach through Parent Topic clustering. It groups keywords according to the main traffic-driving query of the top-ranking page, which is useful for deciding whether several keywords belong on one page. It is strong for page-level targeting, but it does not provide Surfer’s domain-wide coverage map or direct publishing workflow.

My verdict is that Topical Map is one of Surfer’s stronger strategic features. It connects real site data, content gaps, competitor coverage and article creation unusually well. Just treat it as an opportunity model, not a machine-generated commandment to publish all 921 ideas. Nobody needs that much homework.

AI Visibility

Once the report finished processing, AI Visibility became considerably more substantial than the setup screen suggested. We tracked 30 prompts across six topic groups, and Surfer returned 339 domains, 596 individual URLs, 2,900 references, hundreds of recognized entities, competitor rankings, and the fanout queries used by the AI engines.

Our publishing brand received a Visibility Score of 0, a Mention Rate of 0%, and no Average Position. This does not mean the report failed. It means the brand was not explicitly named in any of the answers generated for our selected prompts on that date. Since this was the first run, there was also no historical trend to examine yet. But of course, we didn’t use a commercial brand, so that’s why the test failed, I guess.

The Sources report was more useful for our type of website. It found 2,900 citations across 596 URLs from 339 domains, showing exactly which pages the models relied upon when answering our prompts. The Mention Gap also found 116 sources associated with ChatGPT, 108 with Google, and 75 with Claude, while our own brand had no source overlap. That is not flattering, but it is actionable. For a publisher, these citation gaps can reveal which outlets, reports, journalists, and subject areas are shaping AI answers.

The competitor report was revealing, although “competitors” is not quite the right word. Surfer ranked Google, Reuters, The Associated Press, Claude, journalist Karen Hao, the BBC, Euronews, Perplexity, Sifted, Tech.eu, Cade Metz, and ChatGPT. That is a mixture of publishers, journalists, technology companies, and AI products. These are really the entities winning visibility for our prompts, not necessarily companies competing directly with our website. Surfer should probably rename this section because Claude is not about to launch a newsroom and steal our display-ad revenue. At least, I hope not.

The Prompts report confirmed that all six topic groups produced zero visibility for our brand. However, the models recognized between roughly 100 and 200 other entities within each group. This helps explain the zero score: the prompts generated plenty of answers and brand references, but our publication was simply not among them.

Fanout Queries was probably the most interesting editorial feature. One prompt about journalistic ethics produced 37 supporting queries and appeared 38 times across the monitored models. Surfer also extracted recurring phrases such as “best European AI news sources,” “AI tools for news research,” and “journalism standards.” Some of the phrases read like a search engine experiencing a mild concussion, so they still need a human editor, but they can expose subtopics that belong in an article or supporting content cluster.

There is also an important testing caveat. We ran this on a publishing website, where AI engines may cite an article without prominently naming the publication. Product and ecommerce brands are more likely to appear directly in answers to prompts such as “best accounting software” or “best running shoes,” which naturally produce lists of named products. AI Visibility may therefore create a clearer and more flattering report for a product brand than for a publisher. We would need to test both before concluding that Surfer is genuinely better suited to ecommerce, but the scoring model certainly appears more intuitive for entities that AI engines explicitly recommend.

At this stage, the browser began to clog up noticeably. The report was handling hundreds of URLs, thousands of references, multiple filters, charts, and expandable tables, and the interface started feeling heavier than it should.

A standalone desktop application could help if Surfer built it to cache data properly and handle processing outside the browser. A basic Electron wrapper would solve very little because that is essentially Chrome wearing different trousers. More immediate improvements would be background report generation, email notifications when processing finishes, server-side pagination, virtualized tables, and more aggressive lazy loading.

Setting up a standalone Audit


This Audit is different from the broader Content Audit covered earlier. It analyzes one exact URL against the pages ranking for one target keyword in a selected location. During setup, we enter the page, keyword, country or city, and choose whether Surfer should crawl mobile or desktop results. Mobile is selected by default. There is also an optional sentiment analysis for NLP entities, which adds positive, negative, or neutral context to the recommended terms.

I encountered a strange bug before the audit could even begin. The form accepted the URL and keyword and allowed us to press Create Audit, but nothing was saved. Returning to the dashboard produced an empty-state message claiming that no audit had been created.

I eventually fixed it by creating and saving a new folder first, then assigning the audit to that folder instead of leaving it under Unassigned. The folder should only be an organizational option, and Surfer does not list it as a requirement for creating an audit, so this appears to be a saving or interface bug rather than intended behaviour. I cannot prove the folder itself was the underlying cause, but repeating the process with a saved folder made the audit persist.

It is a small issue, but a particularly irritating one because the interface gives no error. It simply accepts the request and then develops selective amnesia. Surfer should either fix the unassigned state or display a proper failure message instead of making users invent folder-based SEO rituals.

What the Audit recommended

Surfer gave its own homepage a Content Score of 41 and suggested gaining at least 27 points. The practical recommendations were to place “AI visibility” in the H1, use more related terminology, add at least 320 words, expand the paragraph content, add more headings and bolded phrases, and shorten the 179-character meta description. Internal linking, title length, TTFB, and page load time all passed without issues.

The crawl itself appears accurate, particularly the structural counts and performance measurements. The optimization advice is much less reliable when taken literally. Surfer wants 73 or more paragraphs, up to 56 headings, between 37 and 97 bold elements, and as many as 2.95 exact-keyword mentions per 100 words. At the current length, that could mean roughly 39 to 82 uses of “AI visibility,” despite the same report saying competitors use the phrase only 6 to 20 times. As presented, those figures are internally inconsistent and following them blindly would produce spectacular keyword soup.

The score is therefore best treated as a comparison checklist, not a ranking prediction. Its sensible findings are useful, especially the missing H1 phrase and long meta description, but the aggressive density and structural targets require editorial judgment. Auditing a broad homepage against “AI visibility” may also mix product pages, tools, and informational content, which makes careful competitor selection essential.

Topic Research

Topic Research is the faster, seed-keyword version of Topical Map. We enter a topic and country, and Surfer groups related searches into clusters with keyword difficulty, combined volume, coverage, ranking positions, and content recommendations. Connecting Search Console is optional, but doing so adds coverage and ranking data. Any idea can then be sent directly into Content Editor. Surfer describes it as an idea-generation tool, while Topical Map is intended for planning the architecture of an entire website.

Semrush Keyword Strategy Builder is more capable for large strategies, supporting up to 10,000 keywords and organizing them into pillar pages and subpages. Ahrefs Parent Topic is better for deciding whether several keywords can realistically rank through one page. Surfer is easier and connects ideas to writing more smoothly, but its clustering needs closer human supervision. For quick brainstorming it works; for building a precise content strategy, Topical Map or Semrush is the safer choice.

But I found it to be decent enough.

Keyword Research

Surfer turns a seed keyword into clustered content opportunities based on search intent and current Google results. Our “best SEO tool” search produced 77 clusters, each showing intent, monthly search volume, difficulty, and related terms. Results can be filtered, exported, marked as missing or completed, and sent directly to Content Editor. Basically, it turns keyword research into an editorial queue before the spreadsheet gains consciousness.

Compared with Semrush Keyword Magic and Ahrefs Keywords Explorer, Surfer is faster and more convenient for content production. Semrush offers much deeper filtering, CPC data, trends, questions, SERP features, and a considerably larger keyword database, while Ahrefs is stronger for Traffic Potential, Parent Topic analysis, clicks, backlinks, and detailed SERP evaluation. Surfer’s clustering is useful, although some suggestions are awkward or overlapping, so human cleanup is still required. Overall, it is a good writer-first research tool, but not a complete replacement for Semrush or Ahrefs when making serious keyword investment decisions.

SERP Analyzer

SERP Analyzer was the one major feature we could not test. Although it appears inside the platform, Surfer support confirmed that Advanced SERP Analysis is limited to the Peace of Mind plan and is unavailable during the Pro trial.

Surfer says the tool compares top-ranking pages, content structure, keyword usage, headings, word count, and other potential ranking signals to identify gaps in your own page. That sounds useful, but these remain product claims until we can test the output and judge whether its recommendations are genuinely insightful or simply another collection of SERP averages wearing a nice jacket.

Access would have required upgrading to the €359-per-month Peace of Mind plan, including an immediate prorated charge. Paying that much simply to inspect one feature felt excessive, so we stopped there. We will contact Surfer for a temporary test account and update this section once we have properly tested SERP Analyzer against competing tools.

AI Humanizer

Surfer’s AI Humanizer combines an AI detector with a rewriting tool. You can paste in text, receive an AI-likelihood estimate, and then rewrite it using an automatic tone or a custom brand voice. The interface is simple, the 50,000-word allowance is generous, and having both functions in one place is certainly convenient.

Our results were mixed, leaning negative. The detector sometimes returned “0% AI likelihood” and confidently claimed that AI-written passages appeared to be created by a human. That makes the score far too unreliable to use as evidence of authorship. A green badge is reassuring, but reassurance and accuracy are unfortunately different products.

The humanization itself did not impress us much either. It changed sentences, but the result often felt rewritten rather than genuinely human. It could smooth out an awkward draft, but it did not consistently add the judgment, personality, irregular rhythm, or first-hand detail that good human writing usually contains.

It is a convenient secondary editing tool, especially with custom voices, but we would not rely on it to detect AI content or prepare an article for publication without further editing. A competent human editor remains considerably harder to automate.

Surfer SEO review summary

After testing nearly every feature available during the Pro trial, I think Surfer is best understood as a content-production system rather than a complete SEO platform. Its real strength is not that it owns uniquely magical data. It is that it connects research, writing, optimization, internal linking, auditing, collaboration and publishing in one unusually coherent workflow.

Content Editor remains the strongest reason to buy it. Topical Map and Content Audit are also useful because they turn Search Console data into something an editorial team can act upon. AI Visibility produced a surprisingly detailed picture of sources, entities, competing brands and fanout queries, although our first report returned no visibility for the publishing brand itself.

The problem is that Surfer can make its scores feel more authoritative than they really are. We watched it optimize one of its own articles, add almost 300 words and reward itself with 29 additional points. The standalone Audit suggested keyword densities and structural targets that would have made the page considerably worse if followed literally. Several pages also ranked first despite receiving poor Surfer scores, which is a useful reminder that Google does not grade websites using Surfer’s dashboard.

Surfer saves time, but it does not remove the need for SEO judgment, fact-checking or editing. Use it as a research assistant, production workflow and optimization checklist. Do not use it as an oracle wearing a green gauge.

  • Surfer explains the next action clearly, making it approachable for less experienced users.

What I did not like

  • The trial requires payment details and automatically converts into a subscription.
  • Annual billing is emphasized before the cheaper Discovery plan becomes visible.
  • Several important capabilities are restricted by plan, including API access and Advanced SERP Analysis.
  • Content Score can encourage users to optimize for the score rather than the reader.
  • Auto-Optimize may add unnecessary language simply to satisfy Surfer’s recommendations.
  • AI-generated drafts still require extensive fact-checking.
  • Audit recommendations can become internally inconsistent or excessively aggressive.
  • The AI Detector produced false assurances that AI-written text was human.
  • The Humanizer changed text without consistently making it better.
  • We encountered a silent Audit-saving bug and noticeable browser slowdown.
  • Surfer is not a replacement for technical SEO, backlink analysis or a dedicated rank tracker.
  • “Unlimited” usage remains subject to documented fair-use limits.

Who should use Surfer?

Surfer makes the most sense for agencies, in-house content teams and publishers producing enough search-led content to benefit from a repeatable workflow. It is particularly useful when multiple writers need consistent briefs, shared optimization guidance and a clear path from keyword to published article.

It is harder to recommend to occasional bloggers, highly technical SEO teams or anyone who already has mature workflows built around Ahrefs, Semrush, Search Console and an experienced editorial team. Those users may find that Surfer saves fewer hours than its subscription costs.

My final take

Surfer is one of the best workflow tools for producing and refreshing search-focused content, but it is not proof that the content will rank, attract citations or satisfy readers. Its strongest features reduce research and coordination work. Its weakest features attach confident numbers to recommendations that still require human judgment.

I would recommend it to busy content teams, with the condition that writers remain responsible for facts, originality and final quality. For a solo user or a team seeking a complete SEO suite, Frase, SE Ranking, Semrush or Ahrefs may offer better value depending on the work that matters most.
