Overview
Key camera specifications:
- Primary: 50 MP, f/1.68, 82° (wide), 1/1.3″, Octa PDAF
- Ultra-wide: 48 MP, f/1.7, 123˚ (ultrawide), 1/2.51″
- Tele: 48 MP, f/2.8, 123° (periscope telephoto), 1/1.95″, Quad PDAF, OIS, 5x optical zoom
The Google Pixel 11 Pro XL camera delivers a strong overall performance, with consistent results across both photo and video use cases. The device provides a pleasant and reliable rendering in most conditions, with strong exposure and color performance, stable autofocus and a good overall balance between texture preservation and noise reduction. The camera also benefits from improvements compared with the previous generation, particularly in telephoto photography and portrait rendering.
Many of these improvements are enabled by new hardware and Google’s continued investment in AI-powered photography features. The new 48 MP telephoto camera offers 30% higher light sensitivity and extends Pro Zoom up to 120x, compared with 100x on the previous generation. Beyond pure image quality, Google is also using AI to expand the possibilities of photography and improve the overall photographer experience, with features designed to enhance facial details, refine images and provide more creative control. However, our testing occasionally revealed visible artifacts at the boundaries between enhanced and non-enhanced image regions.
In photo mode, the Pixel 11 Pro XL performs particularly well in terms of exposure, color and overall image quality. The extended dynamic range allows the device to handle challenging scenes effectively, while vivid colors and natural skin tones provide a generally pleasant rendering. The telephoto camera has also improved, offering more natural fine details and better texture preservation than last year’s model, while the 120x AI-assisted zoom extends the device’s reach for long-distance photography.
Video performance is generally good, but the device remains behind the best competitors, particularly the iPhone 17 Pro. Standard video provides reliable exposure, color and autofocus, but more demanding scenes reveal limitations in stabilization, motion handling and lowlight rendering. The ultra-wide camera can also show some loss of fine details, while contrast can sometimes be slightly too high in bright and HDR scenes.
Overall, the Pixel 11 Pro XL offers a well-rounded camera experience, with its strongest results coming from still photography, telephoto rendering and consistent color and exposure performance. The improved telephoto camera and 120x Pro Zoom complement Google’s increasingly sophisticated AI photography features, which aim not only to improve image quality but also to enhance the overall photography experience. While some limitations remain in video and secondary-camera performance, the device provides a competitive experience across most shooting scenarios.

Test summary
About DXOMARK Camera tests: DXOMARK’s camera evaluations take place in laboratories and real-world situations using a wide variety of use-cases. The scores rely on objective tests for which the results are calculated directly using measurement software in our laboratory setups, and on perceptual tests where a sophisticated set of metrics allow a panel of image experts to compare aspects of image quality that require human judgment. Testing a smartphone involves a team of engineers and technicians for about a week. Photo and Video quality are scored separately and then combined into an overall score for comparison among the cameras in different devices. For more information about the DXOMARK Camera protocol, click here. More details on smartphone camera scores are available here. About DXOMARK Camera Photo tests
For scoring and analysis, DXOMARK engineers capture and evaluate more than 3,800 test images in controlled lab environments as well as outdoor, indoor and low-light natural scenes, using the camera’s default settings. The photo protocol is designed to take into account the main use cases and is based on typical shooting scenarios, such as portraits, landscape and zoom photography. The evaluation is performed by visually inspecting images against a reference of natural scenes, and by running objective measurements on images of charts captured in the lab under different lighting conditions from 0.1 to 10,000+ lux and color temperatures from 2,300K to 6,500K.
The Google Pixel 11 Pro XL delivers a strong photo experience, with a good balance between exposure, color, detail preservation and noise reduction across different lighting conditions. Target exposure is generally accurate and pleasant, and the extended dynamic range allows the camera to preserve a good amount of information in both bright and dark areas. This makes the device reliable in high-contrast scenes, although some contrast limitations can become visible in particularly bright or HDR conditions.
Color rendering is another strength of the camera. Colors are generally vivid and pleasant, while skin tones remain natural across outdoor and indoor conditions. The rendering remains consistent between different shooting environments, helping the camera produce a reliable result without excessive color deviations. Autofocus is also stable and accurate in most conditions, contributing to a dependable shooting experience when capturing both static and moving subjects.
The Pixel 11 Pro XL provides a good overall compromise between texture preservation and noise reduction. Fine details remain generally well preserved, while noise is kept at a relatively low level across most conditions. Telephoto performance has improved compared with the previous generation, with more natural details and better texture preservation. Portrait mode has also progressed, providing good subject segmentation and a progressive blur gradient, although the iPhone 17 Pro and particularly the latest Vivo and Oppo devices still provide a more refined bokeh experience.

Google Pixel 11 Pro XL Photo scores
The photo Main tests analyze image quality attributes such as exposure, color, texture, and noise in various light conditions. Autofocus performances and the presence of artifacts on all images captured in controlled lab conditions and in real-life images are also evaluated. All these attributes have a significant impact on the final quality of the images captured with the tested device and can help to understand the camera’s main strengths and weaknesses at 1x.
Exposure is one of the key attributes for technically good pictures. The main attribute evaluated is the brightness level of the main subject through various use cases such as landscape, portrait, or still life. Other factors evaluated are the global contrast and the ability to render the dynamic range of the scene (ability to render visible details in both bright and dark areas). When the camera provides Photo HDR format, the images are analyzed with a visualization on an HDR reference monitor, under reference conditions specified in the ISO-22028-5 standard. Repeatability is also important because it demonstrates the camera’s ability to provide the same rendering when shooting several images of the same scene.

Autofocus tests concentrate on focus accuracy, focus repeatability, shooting time delay, and depth of field. Shooting delay is the difference between the time the user presses the capture button and the time the image is actually taken. It includes focusing speed and the capability of the device to capture images at the right time, what is called ‘zero shutter lag’ capability. Even if a shallow depth of field can be pleasant for a single subject portrait or close-up shot, it can also be a problem in some specific conditions such as group portraits; Both situations are tested. Focus accuracy is also evaluated in all the real-life images taken, from infinity to close-up objects and in low light to outdoor conditions.
Edge acutance irregularity and average shooting delay along all tested conditions
This graph illustrates focus irregularity and speed as well as zero shutter lag capability, for different light conditions. Each point is the result of the aggregation of the measurements for a group of 30 pictures per conditions. The y-axis shows the average acutance difference with the best focus in percentage. The lower the better. On the x-axis, a negative delay means the photo is taken just before the user triggers the shutter, a positive delay means the photo is taken just after. The closer to 0 ms, the better. Acutance and delay are measured respectively using the Dead leaves chart and the LED Universal Timer, on the AF HDR Setup.

About DXOMARK Camera Video tests
DXOMARK engineers capture and evaluate almost 3 hours of video in controlled lab environments and in natural low-light, indoor and outdoor scenes, using the camera’s default settings. The evaluation consists of visually inspecting natural videos taken in various conditions and running objective measurements on videos of charts recorded in the lab under different conditions from 0.1 to 10000+ lux and color temperatures from 2,300K to 6,500K.
The Google Pixel 11 Pro XL provides a generally good video experience, with reliable performance in standard shooting conditions and a rendering that remains pleasant across different scenes. Exposure is generally well controlled, colors are vivid and autofocus remains stable, allowing the camera to produce consistent footage without major weaknesses during everyday recording. The device is therefore capable of delivering good results when conditions are not particularly demanding.
However, the gap with the best video-performing competitors becomes more visible in challenging situations. Dynamic scenes can reveal residual motion that is not fully compensated by the stabilization system, while sharpness can vary slightly during stabilization. Backlit scenes can also produce slightly low brightness on the subject, particularly when the camera is faced with strong differences between the subject and background.
Lowlight video is another area where the Pixel 11 Pro XL shows some limitations. Residual noise becomes more visible as light levels decrease, and occasional color casts can affect the consistency of the rendering. These issues, together with the remaining stabilization limitations, mean that standard video performance still lags behind the iPhone 17 Pro and other top-performing competitors.

Noise tests analyze various attributes of noise such as intensity, chromaticity, grain, structure, temporal aspects on real-life video recording as well as videos of charts taken in the lab. Natural videos are visually evaluated, with particular attention paid to the noise in the dark areas and high dynamic range conditions. Objective measurements are performed on the videos of charts recorded in various conditions from 0.1 to 10000 lux. The chart used is the DXOMARK visual noise chart.
