Lahore Orders Crackdown on Unsafe School Transport

Lahore Traffic Police has ordered a strict crackdown on unsafe practices involving vehicles used to transport schoolchildren, including overloading and the use of gas cylinders.

Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore Syed Abdul Rahim Sherazi directed traffic police officials to take action against vans, rickshaws, buses and other vehicles carrying students in violation of safety regulations.

The CTO instructed officials to ensure that LPG cylinders are not used in vans, wagons or rickshaws transporting schoolchildren.

He also directed traffic police to prevent rickshaw drivers from allowing children to sit on the front seat, citing safety concerns.

Officials were further ordered to stop drivers from hanging schoolbags and other items from the sides of rickshaws.

The CTO also prohibited passengers from sitting in the front seat of rickshaws operating on Canal Road.

In addition, pickup drivers were instructed to carry no more than one passenger in the front seat.

Sherazi directed DSPs and the Education Unit to communicate the safety measures to school administrations and parents.

He urged parents to take greater responsibility for their children’s safety and ensure that students travel through safe and compliant transportation services.

The crackdown is aimed at reducing safety risks and ensuring that school transport operators follow traffic regulations while carrying children across Lahore.
