Swapping your aluminum trekking poles for carbon fiber models can cut weight from your setup, but it has two main drawbacks: price and durability. Cascade Mountain Tech’s 3-piece poles excel on both accounts. At $52, they’re just slightly more than even budget aluminum poles, and a good deal lighter. (Our favorite aluminum pole of the year, the Black Diamond Trail, weighs in at an ounce heavier per pair and costs about twice as much as this one.) As for durability, our testers haven’t managed to break them even after four years of testing. And even at that rock-bottom price, the poles come with some nice extras: The cork grips are soft yet durable, while a variety of included baskets and rubber tips allow hikers to adapt their setup to the conditions. (Minor complaint: The plastic quick-locks need to be tightened down before they’ll hold the pole sections securely in place.)
