Xiaomi Pad 9 Pro Leak Reveals a Much Bigger Screen and Battery


Xiaomi is preparing its next flagship tablets, and we now have a better idea of what to expect from the Xiaomi Pad 9 Pro. A new leak points to a much bigger 12.5-inch display, Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 and a battery that grows by around 20 percent. The charging speed, however, isn’t changing.

That sounds like a good trade to me. Xiaomi is improving the parts that matter most on a large tablet instead of chasing another charging record.

A much bigger tablet this time

According to Digital Chat Station, the Xiaomi Pad 9 Pro will use a 12.5-inch LCD display with 3.2K resolution and a 144Hz refresh rate. That’s quite a jump from the 11.2-inch screen on the current Pad 8 Pro.

The bigger screen also tells us where Xiaomi is going with this model. At 12.5 inches, the Pad 9 Pro should be much better suited to split-screen apps, video and work with a keyboard. The downside, of course, is that it won’t be as easy to carry around.

Xiaomi isn’t changing everything. The 144Hz refresh rate stays the same, and the company is sticking with LCD instead of moving to OLED.

Bigger screen, bigger battery

A larger display needs more power, and Xiaomi seems to have thought about that. The leak points to an 11,000mAh battery, up from 9,200mAh on the Pad 8 Pro. That’s close to a 20 percent increase in capacity.

Charging remains at 67W and I don’t really see that as a problem. Tablets don’t need to charge as fast as phones, and I would rather have the larger battery. If Xiaomi can keep power use under control, the Pad 9 Pro should easily handle a full day of work or media.

Performance gets an upgrade too. Xiaomi is expected to use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, while the current Pad 8 Pro runs on the Snapdragon 8 Elite. We don’t have the full performance picture yet, but this should keep the Pad 9 Pro near the top of the Android tablet market.

What about the Pad 9 Pro Max?

The Pad 9 Pro won’t be Xiaomi’s best tablet this year. The company has already confirmed a Pad 9 Pro Max, which will sit above it with an even larger 13.3-inch display and Xiaomi’s new Xring O3 chip.

That gives the Pad 9 series a pretty clear structure. The standard Pad 9 should remain the smaller and cheaper option, the Pad 9 Pro moves up to 12.5 inches, and the Pro Max goes after users who want something closer to a laptop.

Xiaomi hasn’t confirmed the Pad 9 Pro specs yet, so things could still change before launch. But a bigger screen and almost 2,000mAh of extra battery sound like the right upgrades. For a tablet, I would take both over a thinner body or faster charging any day.
