This is the third Batch Bicycle ebike we have tested and the second one aimed squarely at comfort-focused cruising. The first was the eCB.3, a polished commuter that impressed us with its smooth assistance, capable component package, and easygoing ride. The Batch eCB.1 follows much of the same formula but pares it down slightly to offer a more accessible price.
Batch Bicycles has built its lineup around approachable bikes that use familiar components and do not require riders to become ebike experts before leaving the driveway. The eCB.1 fits that philosophy well. It combines a step-through aluminum frame, upright riding position, 500W Vinka rear hub motor, five pedal-assist levels, hydraulic disc brakes, integrated lighting, and full fenders. It lands in a busy part of the market where shoppers have plenty of choices.
I spent a month cruising the West Michigan lakeshore on the eCB.1, running errands, joining family rides, and taking longer weekend excursions. My routes included paved bike paths, regular roads, wet pavement, gravel roads, and hard-packed nontechnical trails. After that time, I came away pretty impressed by how lively and comfortable this simple-looking cruiser can be. It also has two quirks that prospective buyers should understand before bringing one home.
Unboxing and Assembling the Batch eCB.1
The eCB.1 arrived well packaged and in perfect condition. Nothing was scratched, bent, or damaged in transit, and the major components were already installed.
Assembly followed the usual direct-to-consumer ebike routine. I installed the handlebar, front wheel and fender, pedals, front light, and seat. Everything else arrived properly aligned and adjusted. The brakes did not rub, the derailleur shifted correctly, and I did not have to chase down any loose parts or strange noises before the first ride.
The only disappointment was the absence of assembly tools. Many ebikes at this price include a basic tool kit, but Batch provides none. An adjustable wrench and a set of metric hex wrenches are enough to complete the job, though buyers who do not already have them will need to purchase or borrow the necessary tools.
From opening the box to making the final fit adjustments, assembly took me approximately 20 minutes.
Frame, Construction, and Everyday Equipment
The eCB.1 uses a 6061 hydroformed aluminum step-through frame with relaxed geometry. The low frame makes mounting and dismounting easy, which is especially useful when making frequent stops. The frame feels sturdy underneath you, the welds are clean, and nothing about the construction gave me pause during the month I rode it.

This model has a rigid aluminum fork rather than suspension. That helps keep the bike simpler up front, but it also means the tires and saddle are responsible for most of the cushioning. Fortunately, the 27.5 x 2.4-inch Kenda Kwick Seven-5 tires have enough volume to soften cracks, road seams, and gravel chatter without making the bike feel slow or cumbersome.
Batch also includes full plastic fenders. Plastic does not have the same appearance as metal, but it will not rust, and these stayed quiet throughout my rides. More importantly, they kept water and road debris from spraying up on wet pavement. Fenders are easy to overlook on a recreational bike, but they are close to essential on one that may be used for commuting and errands.

The lighting setup is simple but useful. The front light is bright, and the rear light blinks when the brakes are applied. That is a nice touch that gives drivers and other riders a clearer indication that you are slowing down.
Even the pedals fit the bike’s straightforward personality. They are old-school rubber block pedals with plenty of surface area and grip. They are not flashy, but they are comfortable under everyday shoes and suit the eCB.1 better than a narrow or overly aggressive pedal would.
Batch eCB.1 Rider Fit and Comfort
I tested the M/L frame and am six feet tall with longer legs than average. I needed the seatpost at its maximum safe extension to get the pedaling position I wanted, but once it was there, the bike fit me well. Batch lists the M/L as suitable for riders from 5 feet 5 inches to 6 feet 2 inches, and I agree with that range based on my experience.
That sizing experience is worth mentioning because some ebike companies publish extremely broad height ranges that do not always hold up once proper leg extension and cockpit space are considered. Batch did a great job here. The M/L did not leave my six-foot frame feeling cramped, and I could pedal with useful leg extension rather than settling for a knees-up cruiser position.
The Cionlli saddle is also well chosen. It is neither overly soft nor punishingly firm, and it remained comfortable during longer weekend rides. An excessively plush saddle can feel inviting for the first few minutes and become uncomfortable once you spend more time on it. This one provides enough padding for casual riding while still offering the support needed for longer outings.
The 660mm swept-back handlebar creates the relaxed, upright posture most riders will want from a comfort cruiser. It reduces the reach and keeps you from leaning heavily over the front of the bike. The tradeoff is that the amount of sweep and grip positioning places my wrists at a slightly unnatural angle.
It never caused pain or numbness, and I would not call it a dealbreaker, but I noticed it more as ride time increased. Hand and wrist positioning varies considerably between riders, so this is another reason a short test ride can be valuable.
A Well-Tuned Cadence Sensor Makes a Difference
The eCB.1 uses a cadence sensor, a sensible choice for keeping the price under control. Cadence systems detect that the cranks are turning and then deliver a predetermined level of assistance. Less carefully tuned versions can feel abrupt, with the motor switching between fully engaged and completely off as though someone behind you keeps alternating between pushing and letting go.
Batch did a notably good job tuning this one. The assistance arrives quickly without slamming into the rear wheel, and the five pedal-assist levels are spaced well enough that each one has a useful purpose. Lower settings provide a light push for paths and crowded areas, while the higher levels deliver a meaningful jump in power for open roads and hills. Moving from one level to the next feels progressive instead of arbitrary.
It still feels like a cadence-driven ebike rather than a torque-sensor bike, but it avoids much of the jerky, on-and-off behavior that gives inexpensive cadence systems a bad reputation. That tuning is one of the eCB.1’s strongest qualities.
Motor Performance and Top Speed on the Batch eCB.1
The 500W Vinka rear hub motor has considerably more pep than the eCB.1’s relaxed cruiser appearance suggests. Acceleration is snappy, hills along my usual lakeshore routes were never a problem, and the motor did not feel strained when I moved into the higher assist levels.
In pedal-assist level five, the display reached 28.3 mph before the motor stopped providing assistance. That speed was recorded on the bike’s display and was not independently verified with GPS, so it is best viewed as an indicated result. The cutoff itself was clean and predictable. The motor felt as though it had power left, but the controller held it at the Class 3 assistance limit as intended.
Using the throttle, the display topped out at 19.6 mph. That is close enough to Batch’s 20 mph throttle target that the difference is inconsequential for normal riding.
The Shimano Tourney seven-speed drivetrain shifted smoothly throughout the month and required no adjustments. A seven-speed setup is basic, but it gives this bike enough range for flats, hills, and general cruising.
Batch paired the gearing, 38-tooth chainring, wheel size, and motor speed well. At the highest speeds, the pedals can begin to feel light if you are barely contributing, but there is still useful resistance when you make a deliberate effort. It avoids the excessive ghost pedaling that makes some Class 3 ebikes feel as if your feet are spinning without accomplishing anything.
Braking and Tire Performance
Tektro HD-E3520 hydraulic disc brakes with 180mm rotors are a strong inclusion at this price. They deliver excellent stopping power without feeling grabby, and the lever modulation makes it easy to scrub a little speed or stop hard when necessary. The brakes arrived properly adjusted and stayed consistent throughout my testing.
The Kenda tires also performed well across the surfaces this bike is likely to encounter. They roll smoothly on pavement, held their grip on wet roads, and remained predictable on gravel roads and hard-packed trails. They are not intended for technical trail riding, deep sand, or loose off-road terrain, but they give the eCB.1 more versatility than a narrow commuter tire while contributing noticeably to comfort.
That tire volume matters because there is no suspension fork or suspension seatpost. On badly broken pavement, you will still feel sharper impacts, but on the rough roads, gravel, and packed paths I rode, the bike was more comfortable than its rigid setup led me to expect.
The KDS KD-716 Display and Controls
The KDS KD-716 display is minimal, clear, and easy to read in bright sunlight. It provides the riding information you need without crowding the screen with menus and graphics. Speed, battery status, trip information, and the current assist level are easy to check at a glance.
There is nothing especially advanced about the interface, but that works in the eCB.1’s favor. The controls are easy to understand, the five assist levels are quick to change, and the display never distracts from riding. Simple but effective is the right description.
The Throttle Cannot Start From a Stop
My largest complaint with the eCB.1 is the same throttle restriction we encountered on the other Batch ebikes we reviewed. You must begin pedaling and get the bike moving before the throttle becomes active. Once the system recognizes that you are underway, the throttle works normally. As far as I could determine, there is no display setting that disables this safety feature.
I understand why Batch made this choice. Accidentally pressing a live throttle while standing next to or mounting an ebike can send it lunging forward, and that can be especially intimidating for a new rider. Requiring movement first reduces that risk.
The problem is that starting from a stop is exactly when I find a throttle most useful. In downtown traffic, a quick throttle launch helps get the bike through an intersection and up to speed before surrounding cars begin closing the gap. On the eCB.1, the throttle is like a fast-forward button that becomes available only after the slowest part has already started.
For neighborhood cruising, bike paths, and routes with few stops, this restriction may barely register. Riders who rely on throttle starts in traffic or want help getting a loaded bike rolling will find it frustrating. This is an intentional safety decision rather than a malfunction, but it changes how useful the throttle is.
Battery Size, Range, and Charging Time
The eCB.1 uses a 9Ah battery rated at 420Wh. On one of my rides, I covered 13.2 miles while riding hard, using the motor heavily, and finished with 32% battery remaining. That gives us a useful reference for a theoretical range estimate. If we extrapolate that result linearly, using the same riding style and conditions, the eCB.1 would cover approximately 19.4 miles from a full charge. Because battery percentage displays are not perfectly linear and the final portion of a battery can be managed differently by the system, I would treat that as an estimate rather than an exact maximum. A practical expectation of roughly 18 to 21 miles for aggressive riding is reasonable based on this test.
That result reflects demanding riding rather than range conservation. I was riding hard and asking a lot from the motor, so riders who use lower assist levels, pedal more consistently, travel at moderate speeds, or encounter fewer hills should be able to exceed that figure. Under more balanced conditions, approximately 25 to 30 miles appears realistic, while especially efficient riders on flatter routes may go farther. As with any ebike, actual range will vary with speed, rider weight, terrain, wind, temperature, tire pressure, assist level, and throttle use.
The eCB.1’s battery is relatively small compared with the larger battery used on the eCB.3. That helps keep the eCB.1’s weight and price down, making it easier to handle and more affordable to buy, but the tradeoff is shorter overall riding time and less distance between charges. Riders planning longer commutes, extended recreational rides, or frequent high-assist riding should keep that limitation in mind.
I charged the battery while it remained installed on the bike, which is convenient if you have a place to store the eCB.1 near an outlet. It can also be removed and charged off the bike when that is more practical. The supplied charger is rated at 2 amps, so a full charge from empty takes approximately four to five hours.
Is the Batch eCB.1 Worth $1,499.99?
At the current MSRP of $1,499.99, the eCB.1 sits about where it should. It is not overpriced, but it is not an unusually aggressive bargain either. The rigid fork, cadence sensor, 420Wh battery, and Shimano Tourney drivetrain make it clear where Batch controlled costs. The lack of included assembly tools is harder to excuse, even if it does not affect the riding experience.
The value becomes easier to see once you start riding. The Vinka motor is lively, the cadence system is tuned better than many in this price range, the Tektro hydraulic brakes are excellent, and the Kenda tires are a welcome name-brand component.
Full fenders, integrated lights, a brake-activated rear light, good fit and finish, and a stable frame make it feel like a complete bicycle with adequately chosen components.
That balance makes the price fair. Riders shopping only by battery capacity or motor wattage can find bigger numbers elsewhere. Riders who care about controlled power delivery, reliable braking, familiar bicycle components, and a cohesive ride will better understand where the money went.
Final Thoughts on the Batch eCB.1
The Batch eCB.1 succeeds as both a comfort cruiser and an approachable commuter. The step-through frame is easy to live with, the upright riding position feels natural, and the M/L frame accommodates a six-foot rider with long legs. Its rigid construction is smoother than expected thanks to the 2.4-inch Kenda tires and well-selected saddle, while the 500W motor gives the bike an energetic personality that does not match its understated appearance.
The strong hydraulic brakes, clean shifting, bright display, useful fenders, and brake-activated rear light all contribute to a bike that feels thoughtfully assembled. I also appreciate how well Batch tuned the cadence sensor. It keeps the eCB.1 affordable without saddling it with the harsh power engagement found on many entry-level ebikes.
The throttle restriction remains the biggest drawback, particularly for riders who want motor assistance when pulling away from a stop in traffic. The swept-back handlebar also creates a wrist angle that may not agree with everyone, although it never caused me pain or numbness. Neither issue spoiled the month I spent riding the bike, but both are worth checking during a test ride.
