There’s very little that’s fun about chargers. They’re blocky, angular, and utilitarian. If there is a screen or display, it’s used to spew out numbers and charging protocols.

The cool tech inside
The charger itself is a 65W, 4-port unit based around the energy-efficient GaN (gallium nitride) technology.
Side note: If any charger you’re planning on buying doesn’t mention that it uses GaN/gallium nitride technology, avoid it because there’s a very good chance that it’ll run crazy hot.

On the front are four ports — two USB-C ports for your laptop, tablet, or fast-charging smartphone, and another two USB-A ports for lower-draw devices like earbuds, headphones, or smartwatches. When used as a single-power charger, you can get 65W out of a USB-C port, or 22.5W out of either USB-A port.
Using one port, you can take a laptop like the 15-inch MacBook Air from flat to 50% in only 30 minutes, or a smartphone from zero to 80% in the same time.
If you use combinations of ports simultaneously, then the per-port output drops depending on how many you use, but it’s still more than adequate for most charging needs. Even with all four ports in use, you can get 30W from USB-C.
Tessan quality I’ve come to expect
I’ve tested and reviewed a lot of Tessan gear — I’m particularly fond of Tessan’s universal travel adapters — and this one delivers on all the promises the spec sheet makes. And even when pushed under the heaviest load, it ran nice and cool. Like most modern chargers, this one is packed with the usual overvoltage, undervoltage, overtemperature, and surge protections.
This is built to the standards that I’ve come to expect from a Tessan product.

The charging station is mains-powered via an AC cord, so there’s no secondary charger needed to clutter your workspace.
It’s got a face!
OK, I’ve done well to get this far without mentioning the whimsical cat design. It’s cute!
From the soft, silicone ears to the face on the LCD display. There’s a face for standby, another one for charging, and a face that’s part of the display that shows individual port outputs.
There’s also a screen — that’s faceless — that shows total power output.

You flip through the screens using a button on the top of the unit.
These faces are all super adorable and endearing, and I have to admit that I like them. It’s like a Tamagotchi that I can forget to feed and it doesn’t make a fuss.
This one thrives on neglect!
Putting the cat faces aside for a moment (that’s not easy!), I also like the tower design of the charger as it saves a lot of desk real estate, making it perfect for those who might be short of space, or who don’t want a monster charger commandeering a huge chunk of desk space.
ZDNET’s buying advice
For $39, this Tessan 65W charging station is a great little unit. It combines a solid, fully featured charger in a cute desktop decoration package. I’m someone who loves hardcore utilitarian chargers packed with ports, screens packed with in-depth information, and outputting hundreds of watts of power, but I really like this one. It’s delightful to look at, and it works well.
This is also perfect for those off to college and wanting to equip their dorm with some neat, practical stuff, or those who just want a charger that looks different.
Oh, and you get to choose your cat color, as it comes in black and white.
