After nearly 90 miles across West Michigan roads, bike paths, gravel, dirt, two-tracks, and mellow trails, the dual-battery Saturn proved that its biggest strength is not exercise. It is making the car feel unnecessary for one more trip.

I was halfway through making banana bread when I reached for the baking soda and found an empty box. The oven was already heating, part of the batter was sitting in the bowl, and the nearest store was far enough away that taking the car would turn one missing ingredient into a 25- to 30-minute interruption.

The Heybike Saturn was sitting in the garage, charged and waiting. I grabbed my helmet, took a bike-path shortcut into town, bought the baking soda, and made it back in about 12 minutes. The oven had just finished preheating.

That was a pretty ordinary errand, but it highlighted exactly what the Saturn does best. It makes a five-mile trip feel easier than reaching for the car keys. It is fast, carries a huge amount of battery, and asks almost nothing from your legs unless you want to contribute. More important, it turns a boring trip into the part of the morning you remember.

I spent a little more than a month with the dual-battery Saturn and am closing in on 90 miles. Testing covered West Michigan’s paved roads, gravel and dirt roads, two-tracks, non-technical trails, and paved bike paths. Because of its speed, the Saturn found its way onto roads more than anywhere else. It handled the looser surfaces without complaint, but pavement is where its personality makes the most sense.

Heybike has produced a long list of conventional e-bikes, including commuters, folders, and fat-tire models. The Saturn takes a different route. It has pedals, but its long bench seat, high handlebars, full twist throttle, fat 20-inch tires, and motorcycle-style stance make its intentions clear. Heybike is dipping more than a toe into the e-moped category here.

The first question was not whether Heybike could build another capable e-bike. It was whether the company could make a convincing e-moped without turning it into an awkward bicycle wearing a motorcycle costume.

For the most part, it has. The Saturn looks clean and substantial, with a leather-style seat and a frame that has presence without becoming cartoonish. At 6 feet and about 173 pounds, I fit it well. The seating position is closer to a classic small motorcycle than a pedal bike, so traditional frame-sizing rules do not mean much. You sit upright with your hands high, your feet forward, and a clear view down the road. Heybike lists a rider range of 5 feet 3 inches to 6 feet 3 inches, and that seems reasonable from my time aboard.

The long seat is useful on longer rides. A fixed saddle can lock you into one position like an assigned seat on a school bus. The Saturn lets you slide forward or back as the miles add up. I would not volunteer to spend 100 miles on it, but 40 miles would not scare me. I finished all of my longer rides without wrist, back, hip, or seat discomfort.

The dual-battery Saturn arrives in a standard-looking e-bike box, but the 128-pound shipping weight changes the mood as soon as you try to move it. This is a good time to recruit another set of hands instead of proving anything to the cardboard box.

Packaging was solid, and the bike came through without damage. Assembly included the front wheel and fender, headlight assembly, handlebars, mirrors, and rear rack. Most of the job was straightforward and took about 25 minutes from opening the box to having a rideable bike.

The front axle was the one spot that slowed me down. It is threaded at both ends and uses spacers on each side of the wheel, so the wheel, spacers, fork, and axle all need to line up while you center everything. A repair stand such as the Pro E Lift from Feedback Sports, a helper, or even turning the bike upside down would make that step easier. I chose the stubborn solo route and got it done, but allow a few extra minutes there.

Once assembled, the Saturn feels stout. The frame has more in common with a small motorcycle chassis than a lightweight bicycle. A couple of welds along the top bar could be neater, but I saw nothing that raised a structural concern.

After nearly 90 miles, the only noise to appear is a slight squeak somewhere in the frame area that makes itself known when I go over larger bumps. It sounds like a dry contact point or hardware that needs a touch more tightening, not a developing failure. I will track it down eventually and am certain that a wrench and a careful dab of lubricant will be the fix.

The 52V Motor Delivers Speed

The Saturn uses a 52V Galaxy eDrive rear hub motor rated at 1,000 watts, with 1,800 watts of peak output and a claimed 95 Nm of torque. Those are large numbers, but the useful part is how Heybike tuned them.

Some high-output e-bikes lunge from a stop as if the throttle has only two settings: asleep and startled. The Saturn does not. Initial acceleration is controlled, then the power builds in a strong, steady pull. It feels less like flipping a light switch and more like opening a large faucet. There is plenty on tap, but you can meter it without splashing everything in the room.

That tuning makes the bike easier to manage around intersections, driveways, pedestrians, and tighter pathways. It never felt weak. It skipped the neck-snapping launch that can make a powerful budget e-bike feel crude. Hills were a non-issue during testing, including grades approaching 10 percent. The motor held its pull without obvious lag or a worrying loss of momentum.

In its faster setting, my Saturn reached a consistent display-indicated 36 mph on flat pavement. Heybike says the bike can be adjusted up to 40 mph, but I never saw that number. Since I did not verify speed with GPS, consider 36 mph the bike’s reading rather than a laboratory measurement. It is still absurdly quick for something sold as an e-bike.

That higher-speed mode also needs context. E-bike classifications and road rules vary by location, and speeds above the normal Class 3 limit may restrict where the Saturn can be ridden. Treat the setting as an option for private property or other places where it is permitted, wear a proper helmet, and check the rules where you live.

At 36 mph, The Front End Asks for Your Attention

The Saturn remains composed as speed climbs. It corners with a planted, glued-down feel, and the weight sits low enough that the second battery never made the bike seem top-heavy. At slow speeds, it is easier to handle than its 115-pound curb weight suggests. Once rolling, much of that mass seems to disappear.

At the 36 mph top end, however, the front begins to feel a little light. The bike stayed rideable and did not develop a wobble, but this was no time to steer with one hand while admiring the scenery. On an open stretch with room around me, the speed was a blast. Holding a narrow shoulder while traffic passed was another story. I was paying close attention to the pavement, my line, and every movement at the handlebar.

Dropping a few miles per hour settles the bike and lowers the tension at once. I think that is worth making clear. The Saturn did not feel unstable in normal riding. It felt like a heavy, fat-tire e-moped reaching the edge of the speed range where its bicycle-grade chassis and geometry are happiest. Just because the display offers a bigger number does not mean that number needs to become your cruising speed.

Suspension, Fat Tires, and Brakes That Work

Heybike gives the Saturn 140 mm of front travel suspension and 55 mm at the rear. The ride is not pillow-soft, and I would not describe it as a floating luxury cruiser. What it does is take the sharpness out of broken pavement, gravel chatter, dirt-road washboard, and the larger hits found on two-tracks. The suspension cushioned rough roads enough that I didn’t have to brace for every crack and patch.

The 20 x 4-inch Chao Yang tires deserve some credit. I ran them at 20 psi and found good grip on pavement, gravel, dirt, and mellow trails, including wet pavement after rain. Chao Yang is not the first brand tire snobs reach for, but we have had good wear results with its tires across several test bikes. They are not bargain-bin throwaways. On the Saturn, the wide footprint adds stability without creating a vague, slippery feel in corners.

Then there are the brakes. A 115-pound bike capable of mid-30 mph speeds can expose weak brakes in one hard stop. The Saturn’s two-piston hydraulic calipers and 180 mm rotors were money throughout testing. Lever feel remained predictable, stopping power was strong, and I had no noise, fade, or moments when the bike seemed to be outrunning its brakes. Four-piston calipers would be more impressive here, but the installed setup did its job without any issues.

I like Heybike’s decision to use a single-speed drivetrain. The Saturn is a throttle-first machine, and adding a derailleur would mean more parts to bend, adjust, and replace on a bike most owners will buy to cruise. A cadence sensor handles pedal assist, which would draw criticism on a more bicycle-like commuter. Here, paying more for a torque sensor would solve a problem that barely exists.

Pedaling is useful at low speeds. Below about 10 mph, you can contribute without feeling silly, and the cadence system provides enough support for casual path riding. Above 20 mph, the gearing falls into ghost-pedaling territory. Your feet can spin, but they are not adding much to the effort.

The pedals are best viewed as backup propulsion and a way to help at lower speeds. If both batteries run flat far from home, that single gear and 115-pound weight will make the ride back memorable for all the wrong reasons. I still think single-speed was the right call. The better plan is to pay attention to the battery meter, which proved reliable and believable during my testing.

The single Saturn battery is already large at 52V and 18.4Ah, or 956.8Wh. The dual version doubles that to 36.8Ah and 1,913.6Wh. That is less an e-bike battery than a portable power station that happens to have handlebars attached, giving the Saturn enough stored energy for long commutes, extended errands, and full days of exploring without constantly watching the range meter.

Heybike advertises 60 to 100 miles for the dual-battery model. One hundred miles may be possible in a low assist level with plenty of rider input, modest speeds, favorable weather, and enough patience to spend most of the day in the saddle. That was not how I rode this bike.

My harder-use range estimate is 45 to 50 miles. That figure is an extrapolation, not a full run-to-empty result. After 25 miles of fast riding, often close to the bike’s upper speed range and with little to no pedaling, the display showed about 50 percent remaining. Based on that test, 45 to 50 miles is a fair expectation for someone who uses the throttle and treats the Saturn like the e-moped it is.

Back the speed down below 20 mph, add some pedaling, and 70 to 80 miles looks attainable. Conditions, rider weight, hills, temperature, tire pressure, stops, and throttle use will move that number in either direction. What matters is that the dual-battery Saturn provides enough capacity for a full weekend of casual exploring or a workweek of commuting without making the charger part of your nightly routine.

For example, a commute under roughly 14 miles round trip could fit into a five-day week on one charge under favorable conditions. Keep in mind that speed has a direct effect on range: the faster you ride, the more battery the motor uses, while slowing down conserves energy and can add meaningful miles to the ride. Someone riding near top speed for every mile should leave more margin, while a rider who stays below 20 mph will stretch the same charge considerably farther. Battery estimates are like the fuel gauge in an old pickup. They are useful, but you do not plan to arrive home on the last drop.

How the Two-battery System and Charging Work

With both batteries installed, the Saturn presents them as one combined system on the display. They discharge together, and the battery meter tracked consumption in a way that made sense during my rides. The bike can also run on a single battery, which gives owners some flexibility if one pack is inside charging or if they want to shed a little weight.

Personally, I cannot see much reason to choose the single-battery version unless price or weight is the deciding factor. The full twist throttle suits the Saturn. A thumb lever would work, but the motorcycle-style grip makes speed changes feel natural and gives the cockpit the right character. The color TFT display is bright, easy to read in daylight, and supplies the information I wanted without turning the handlebar into a dashboard from a small airplane. The control buttons sit within reach and were easy to use while riding.

The Heybike app paired on the first attempt and caused zero issues. It can adjust speed and pedal-assist settings, switch between Class 2 and Class 3 limits, track rides, and handle firmware updates. Most important for some buyers, it provides access to the higher off-road speed setting. The bike does not depend on the app for normal setup or everyday riding, which I appreciate. A phone should add options, not become another ignition key.

Heybike includes front and rear lighting, a brake light, turn signals, and an electric horn. I rode at dusk and found the lighting useful, not decorative. The turn signals make sense on a machine that spends time mixing with road traffic, though they do not replace a shoulder and mirror check. Mirrors are included, which saves an immediate accessory purchase, and I am glad Heybike included them because a bike with this motorcycle-style layout and road-going speed really benefits from having mirrors. The plastic reflective surfaces are clear in normal conditions, but they can shake on gravel or rougher roads, making the view a little harder to read at times. They remain useful, and their inclusion is a meaningful part of the Saturn’s ready-to-ride setup.

The long seat has room for a passenger, and Heybike includes folding passenger pegs. The rear rack also gives the Saturn obvious errand and commuting potential. The total listed payload is 330 pounds, which needs to cover the rider, passenger, and anything carried on the rack.

I did not test the Saturn with a passenger or loaded cargo, so I am not going to pretend the presence of pegs proves how it behaves with another person aboard. Extra weight will affect acceleration, braking distance, suspension response, and range. Buyers planning frequent two-up riding should add up their combined weight first and leave room under the limit.

The single-battery Saturn weighs 103 pounds, and the dual-battery model reaches 115 pounds. It is not unwieldy once moving, but gravity sends the invoice when the ride ends.

I would not plan to lift the dual-battery bike onto a conventional ebike rack. Many racks are not even rated for this much weight (although one does come to mind: the 1UP USA Extreme Duty Rack), and many clamping systems do not suit a moped frame. Even loading it into a pickup bed is better with help or a ramp. Removing the batteries reduces the burden, but this remains a large machine.

Storage deserves the same thought. Rolling it into a ground-level garage is easy. Carrying it down basement stairs or up to an apartment is not. The Saturn can replace a surprising number of short car trips, but it wants parking more like a small motorcycle than a bicycle you hang from a wall hook.

Who should buy the Heybike Saturn?

The Saturn makes sense for someone who wants an e-moped for commuting, errands, exploring back roads, and long casual rides. It is especially appealing if the goal is to replace short car trips without arriving sweaty or turning every outing into a workout.

It is a poor fit for riders who want a lightweight e-bike, natural-feeling pedal input, easy rack transport, or something they can carry upstairs. It is also more machine than most riders need for crowded multi-use paths. Speed is useful on the road, but restraint matters around walkers, dogs, children, and conventional cyclists.

At $1,299 for the dual-battery model I tested, the value is hard to ignore. Price out two 52V 18.4Ah e-bike batteries and a 52V 1,000W motor separately, and that number starts to look aggressive before accounting for the frame, suspension, hydraulic brakes, lighting, display, rack, fenders, mirrors, and the fact that the whole package arrives ready to assemble and ride.

The Heybike Saturn has become my first choice when I need to run a quick errand and do not have time for a leisurely ride. It gets me where I am going fast, gives me enough range to stop thinking about charge percentage, and turns an ordinary trip for baking soda into an excuse to take the long way home.

The motor is powerful without being jumpy. The brakes match the weight and speed. The dual batteries provide the sort of range that makes commuting and weekend riding practical, while the long seat and upright posture keep the experience comfortable. It also has limitations. It is heavy, barely worth pedaling above neighborhood speed and the front end demands attention near its 36 mph maximum.

Those tradeoffs do not undermine what the Saturn is. They define it. This is not a bicycle that happens to have a large motor. It is an e-moped that keeps pedals around for low-speed help and backup duty.
