The latest update to the Google app for Windows (version 1.0.22.0) adds dedicated Search modes, letting users switch between different types of Google results without opening an external browser.
The app brings Google Search to the desktop as a standalone client, with features including AI Mode and Google Lens. Users can quickly open it with the Alt + Space keyboard shortcut and can also share their entire screen with the Google app to get help with what’s displayed.
This update expands its Search experience by adding access to more of Google’s search verticals without requiring a separate browser window.
After running a query, users can switch between All, Images, Videos, News, Forums and Books using the Search tabs at the top of the results. Additional options, including Shopping, Maps and Finance, are available under the “More” menu.
The change appears in the Google app’s September 13, 2026 changelog, which lists the feature as “In-App Search Modes” and specifically calls out Images, Videos, News, Forums and Books.
For SEOs and marketers, the update is another sign that Google wants more searches to start and stay within its own surfaces on desktop. As users can now browse vertical results entirely in-app, the change could affect click-through to publisher sites, particularly for queries involving images, videos or forum content.
