Finnish Drone Operator Launches the Regulatory Tool It Wished It Had – sUAS News

Drone Assistant turns official drone regulations into structured, citable answers, launching alongside new research comparing 31 regulatory markets

Flyby Guys, a Finnish commercial drone operator, has launched Drone Assistant, a platform built to help operators work out which drone rules apply to a given operation, in which country, and under what conditions. It is available now at droneassistant.com. The launch comes alongside the Drone Regulation Index 2026, new research from the same team comparing regulatory environments across 31 markets. Austria and Latvia jointly recorded the highest overall score, at 83.6, followed by Poland, Germany and Ireland.

Thirty of the 31 markets met the Index’s evidence and coverage requirements for inclusion in the ranking, while Finland is currently classed as provisional after falling just short of the required threshold on one measure. Together, the two launches point to the same underlying issue: drone regulation has matured considerably in some markets, but operators still face very different regulatory environments depending on where they fly.

That difficulty is what Flyby Guys built Drone Assistant to address. Commercial drone work increasingly crosses borders, and the rules governing it sit across national aviation authorities, regional frameworks such as EASA, technical guidance and, in some cases, geographical-zone data specific to a location. Working out what applies to a particular operation has typically meant searching through several of these sources and cross-referencing them by hand.

Drone Assistant is not simply a conversational search tool. A user can ask a plain-English question about a proposed operation and get an answer with citations attached, so they can check the underlying regulatory text themselves. Behind that interface, the platform converts official regulations and authority guidance into structured, versioned requirements tied to specific jurisdictions and operation types and monitors those sources for changes over time.

Where the available evidence isn’t sufficient to answer a question with confidence, the platform is designed to say so rather than offer a guess. It provides regulatory information rather than flight clearance or airspace authorisation, and it isn’t a substitute for advice from an aviation authority or a qualified professional. The platform is aimed primarily at commercial drone operators working internationally, enterprise drone programmes, BVLOS and Specific Category operators, and autonomous and drone delivery companies, along with organisations expanding operations into new jurisdictions. UAS consultants, compliance teams and remote pilots preparing operations are also expected to use it.

Drone Assistant grew out of Flyby Guys’ own operational experience. The company has spent years supporting drone projects internationally and, in doing so, repeatedly ran into the same obstacle: understanding how rules differ from one country to the next quickly enough to actually plan around them. “One of the hardest parts of operating drones internationally isn’t really flying,” said Stephen Sutton, CEO of Flyby Guys.

“It’s working out exactly which rules apply when you move from one country to another. We’ve spent years going through authority websites, regulations and guidance documents just to plan real operations. What mattered to us wasn’t building a chatbot that sounds confident. It was building the regulatory information underneath it, so someone could ask a straightforward question and then go and check the official source for themselves. It’s the tool we wish we had when we started flying internationally.”

Drone Assistant is operated by Flyby Guys but is being developed as a product in its own right. Coverage and regulatory depth will expand progressively rather than all at once. The team is now inviting drone operators and industry specialists to test the platform against the regulatory questions they encounter in real operations.
