20 tactics to boost SEO & AI visibility

Content optimization improves existing content so it stays useful, findable, and persuasive after publication.

Most advice treats optimizing for readers and optimizing for algorithms as a trade-off. It isn’t.

The things that make a page useful to a reader (clear answers, complete coverage, credible sources, strong structure) also help search engines classify it and AI systems cite it.

This guide covers 20 tactics for doing that work, grouped by reader, search, and AI needs so you can find the specific weakness on a page.

Strong content doesn’t choose between readers and algorithms

Content that works well for readers often gives search engines and AI systems the same things they need: clear answers, complete coverage, credible support, and strong structure.

For example, a direct answer at the start of a section helps readers understand the point quickly. It also helps search engines identify what the section covers and gives AI systems a self-contained passage they can retrieve and summarize.

Article structure showing a question-based H1, a direct answer box, and supporting details about good credit scores

The same principle applies across the page. Clear headings make content easier to scan and interpret. Credible sources help readers trust the information while giving search engines and AI systems clearer attribution and context.

So reader-first, search-friendly, and AI-ready optimization are not separate workflows.

Rankings and citations follow when content is useful, clear, well-supported, and easy to understand.

The tactics in this guide are grouped by reader, search, and AI needs so you can identify specific weaknesses on a page. But many improvements support all three evaluators at once.

What is content optimization?

Content optimization is the process of improving existing content so it reaches more people and encourages more of them to act. Today, that means making a page work for three evaluators: readers, search engines, and AI systems, so it can earn more visibility, trust, and conversions.

For example, you might optimize a blog post so it ranks higher in Google, appears in AI-generated answers, or encourages more people to sign up, book a demo, or make a purchase.

Content optimization can include:

  • Updating outdated facts, examples, and screenshots
  • Adding missing subtopics or common questions
  • Adding expert insights, data, or credible sources
  • Making the content easier to understand
  • Improving headings, title tags, and meta descriptions

Why is content optimization important?

Content optimization is important because it helps published content stay accurate, up to date, and useful enough to drive traffic, leads, signups, or sales.

When content becomes outdated, readers may trust it less, search engines may rank it lower for queries that need fresh information, and AI systems may be less likely to cite it in answers.

Google has freshness systems designed to show newer content when a query calls for current information.

AI systems also appear to favor recent or recently updated pages.

A Seer Interactive study found that almost 90% of AI bot activity focused on content published within the past three years, with the strongest preference for pages updated between 2023 and 2025.

At Semrush, we regularly optimize our content. For example, our link building guide has been updated several times since publication.

And it still ranks on Google’s first page.

How to optimize content for the reader

You can optimize your content for readers by making the page useful, clear, and easy to act on.

Start with these content optimization tips for improving the reader experience:

1. Match search intent to improve rankings

Search intent is the reason someone searches for a keyword.

Ensuring your content aligns with search intent helps your page match what the searcher wants to do or learn.

There are four main types of search intent:

  • Informational: The user wants to learn about a topic
  • Transactional: The user wants to make a purchase or complete an action
  • Navigational: The user wants to find a specific website or page
  • Commercial: The user wants to compare options before buying

Types of search intent: informational, navigational, commercial, and transactional.

To determine search intent, check the top-ranking results for your target keyword. For example, searching for “influencer marketing tools” shows mostly list and comparison posts, which means the keyword has commercial and informational intent.

Google results for “influencer marketing tools” featuring list articles from Sprout Social, Jasper, and Influencity

You can also use Semrush’s Keyword Overview tool. Enter your keyword and review the “Intent” field to see whether the keyword is informational, commercial, transactional, navigational, or a mix of these.

Once you know the intent, update the page to match it. You may need to change the format, add missing sections, remove irrelevant information, improve examples, update the CTA, or make the answer more direct.

The goal is to give readers what they expected to find.

Intent alignment can also improve search visibility because Google wants to show relevant content for each query. And when your page clearly answers the query, even AI systems are more likely to summarize or cite it in AI-generated answers.

2. Cover the topic comprehensively

Covering a topic comprehensively involves answering the main question and the follow-up questions a reader needs before deciding what to do next.

To identify what’s missing in your content and where you can improve, start with a SERP analysis

Use Semrush’s Keyword Overview to review the top-ranking pages for your target keyword to see what they cover.

Open the tool, enter your keyword, and then scroll to the “SERP Analysis” section of the report.

Visit these top-ranking pages one by one and manually examine their content.

Look for specific details like:

  • Missing subtopics: Questions or sections competitors cover that your page does not
  • Content depth: Areas where competing pages explain the topic more clearly or completely
  • Examples: Screenshots, workflows, use cases, or data points that make the content easier to understand
  • Visuals: Images, charts, tables, or videos that help readers understand the topic faster

But don’t copy the same structure or repeat the same information.

Use the SERP to understand what readers expect. Then add something better and unique, such as a clearer workflow, stronger example, expert insight, original data, etc.

Comprehensive coverage also gives search engines more context about the topic and AI systems more relevant passages to retrieve.

3. Make your content easy to understand

Easy-to-understand content helps readers find answers faster and stay engaged.

Focus on two main things: clear language and clear structure.

Clear language makes the answer easier to understand on the first read.

For example, this sentence is hard to read: “The optimization of the page should be conducted in a way that allows the user’s query to be addressed.”

This version is clearer: “Optimize the page so it answers the user’s question.”

Here are a few ways to make your writing clearer:

  • Explain jargon the first time you use it
  • Put the main answer at the start of each section
  • Use active voice where possible
  • Replace long sentences with shorter ones
  • Use specific words instead of vague phrases
  • Cut repeated points or filler sentences
  • Add examples when a concept feels abstract

Check out our guide on how to become a better writer.

Next, clear structure helps readers skim. It also makes sections easier for search engines to classify and gives AI systems clearer passages to extract.

Here are a few ways to structure your content clearly:

  • Use clear H2 and H3 headings
  • Keep paragraphs short
  • Use bullet points for lists
  • Add a table of contents for longer pages
  • Use tables when comparing options
  • Add visuals when they make an idea easier to understand
  • Group related points under the same section

4. Keep content fresh to sustain visibility

Refreshing content helps readers trust your page because it keeps the information accurate, current, and useful.

Fresh content also gives search engines and AI systems more current information to summarize or cite.

Start with important pages, such as product/service pages, high-traffic blog posts, or pages that help generate leads, signups, or sales.

Audit them and look for updates you can make, such as:

  • Replace outdated statistics
  • Update old screenshots
  • Add new examples
  • Fix broken links
  • Add internal links to relevant pages
  • Remove outdated advice
  • Update the CTA if the reader’s next step has changed

Next, prioritize pages that are starting to lose visibility. They’ve already shown they can perform. Updating them can help you recover value faster than creating a new page from scratch.

You can use Semrush’s Position Tracking tool to find which pages are losing visibility for important keywords across Google, ChatGPT, and Google AI Mode.

Open the tool and configure your tracking campaign. Then go to the “Overview” report and check the “Rankings Overview” table to see how your pages are performing for each keyword.

Semrush Rankings Overview tracking prompt positions, mentions, owned sources, and AI Visibility changes

Look for pages that have dropped in position, disappeared from the results, or been overtaken by a competitor.

Then compare them with the current top-ranking results. Check whether your page still matches search intent, answers the main question clearly, covers the topic well, and gives readers a useful next step. Update the page based on what is missing.

How to optimize content for search engines

You can optimize your content for search engines by making your page easier to crawl, understand, and classify for relevant searches.

Here are six ways:

5. Use secondary keywords to expand reach

Secondary keywords are related search terms your page can rank for alongside its primary keyword.

For example, if your main keyword is “content optimization,” secondary keywords might include “content optimization tools,” “SEO content optimization,” and “content optimization strategy.”

Adding secondary keywords shows that your page covers related questions and subtopics around the main keyword.

This broader coverage can help your page appear for more searches around the same topic and give AI systems more context to understand, summarize, or cite your content.

Use Semrush’s Keyword Magic Tool to find secondary keywords. Open the tool, enter your primary keyword, and click “Search.”

The tool will generate a list of related keywords, along with key metrics for each, such as:

To find high-volume terms, set the “Volume” filter to “1,000” or higher, then click “Apply.”

You’ll see keywords with at least 1,000 monthly searches. Review the list and select the most relevant options.

Then include them naturally in headings, introductions, and key sections where they fit contextually.

6. Add semantically related terms

Semantically related terms are words and phrases that add context and depth to your main topic, even when they’re not separate keywords you’re trying to rank for.

These terms help search engines and AI systems understand how the ideas on your page connect. They also help readers because they make the page more complete and useful.

You can use Google autocomplete to find semantically related words and angles people search for.

For example, if your primary keyword is “how to grow tomatoes,” autocomplete suggestions may include phrases like “in pots,” “from seeds,” “in containers,” and “in a raised bed.”

You can also find words semantically related to your primary keyword in Semrush’s Keyword Magic Tool. Go to the “Related” tab and review the keyword groups in the left-side panel.

Once you have a list of semantic keywords, check whether your page already explains the ideas behind them.

In our example, terms like “soil,” “sun,” “seeds,” and “pots” all point to important parts of growing tomatoes. If one of those ideas is missing, add a short section, FAQ, example, image, or step that covers it. If a term does not fit the page, skip it.

7. Improve on-page SEO for better search performance

On-page SEO improves search performance by fixing page-level issues that make your content harder to understand, scan, or show in search results.

Begin with this simple content optimization SEO checklist for important pages:

  • Title tag: Clearly describe the page and include the primary keyword if it fits naturally
  • Meta description: Summarize the page in a way that encourages users to click
  • H1: Make the main topic obvious
  • H2s and H3s: Organize the page into clear sections
  • URL slug: Keep it short, readable, and descriptive
  • Internal links: Point readers and search engines to related pages
  • Image alt text: Describe important images clearly

For content-heavy pages, focus on making the information easy to navigate and understand at a glance.

Break up long sections with clear subheadings, keep paragraphs concise, and make sure each section directly contributes to answering the user’s query. This helps users find what they need faster and makes the page easier for search engines and AI systems to interpret and summarize.

You can use Semrush’s Site Audit tool to find content optimization issues at scale. Open the tool, enter your domain, and complete the configuration to run an audit.

Then go to the “Issues” tab and search for “content optimization.” Review each affected page and check what needs to be improved.

After fixing the issues, rerun the audit to check whether they have been resolved.

8. Optimize visual content

Optimizing visual content helps search engines interpret your images and videos and can improve page performance.

Use these visual optimization tactics:

  • Add descriptive alt text that explains the image clearly
  • Compress image files to improve page speed
  • Use descriptive file names instead of generic names like “image123.jpg”
  • Add captions when an image needs context
  • Add transcripts for videos when they help users and search engines understand the content

These changes can also improve accessibility for readers and help AI systems identify what the visual contains.

9. Optimize your page for SERP features

Optimizing for SERP features helps your content appear in enhanced search results, not just standard organic listings.

SERP features can include AI Overviews, featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, image packs, video results, review snippets, and local packs.

Google SERP Features: AI Overview, Featured Snippet, Organic Results, People also ask, etc.

These features can make your content more visible in search results and give users a clearer reason to click.

Start by checking which SERP features appear for your target keyword.

Open Semrush’s Keyword Overview tool, enter your target keyword, and scroll to the “SERP Analysis” section. Review the SERP features listed for that keyword and click “View SERP” to see what the results look like on Google.

Then optimize your content for the feature that fits the keyword and your page type.

Here are a few best practices:

  • Match the SERP format: If the current results use a paragraph, list, table, or video, structure your content in a similar format when it fits your page
  • Answer the query directly: Give a clear answer near the top of the relevant section before adding examples or extra detail
  • Use question-led headings: Use clear H2s and H3s that reflect the questions users search for
  • Support visual intent: Add useful visuals and optimize the file name, title, caption, and alt text
  • Back up key claims: Use credible sources, examples, or data when the topic requires proof

Clear, well-structured answers can also make relevant information easier for AI systems to identify and extract.

Read our guide on how to optimize for SERP features to learn how to target specific search features.

10. Optimize for rich results with schema markup

Schema markup is code you add to a page to label key details, such as ratings, prices, authors, events, and business information.

These details can help your page qualify for rich results, which are enhanced search listings that show extra information in search results beyond the standard title, URL, and description. Like this:

Google result for an iPhone 17 Pro review showing pros and cons, a 4.5-star rating, and reviewer details

Schema markup can also give AI systems cleaner page details to work with when they summarize information from your content.

Common schema types include Article for blog posts, Product for product pages, Breadcrumb for site navigation, LocalBusiness for local pages, Event for event pages, and Organization for company details.

To add schema markup, use your CMS or SEO plugin, add JSON-LD directly, or ask a developer to implement it. For exact steps, check out our guide on how to add schema markup to your website.

How to optimize content for AI systems

You can optimize content for AI systems by making each important section easy to retrieve, understand, summarize, and cite. This work is also called generative engine optimization.

Here are three ways:

11. Optimize for AI prompts

Optimizing for AI prompts involves finding the questions people ask in AI tools and answering them clearly in your content.

This can improve AI visibility, as clear, complete answers are more likely to be retrieved, summarized, or cited by AI systems.

AI prompts are often more specific than keyword searches.

For example, someone might search Google for “organic farming tips.” But in ChatGPT, they might ask, “What are the best organic farming tips for beginners growing vegetables in a small backyard?”

To find relevant prompts, start with first-party data. Review sales calls, demo transcripts, support tickets, chat logs, customer surveys, and on-site search data. Look for repeated questions, objections, use cases, and comparison points.

You can also use Semrush’s Prompt Research to find prompts at scale. Open the tool, enter a topic related to your brand, product, or page, and click “Analyze.”

In the “Related topics” section, review topic clusters by volume, relevance, and intent.

If a prompt fits an existing page, add it as a section, FAQ, comparison point, or example. If the prompt needs a deeper answer, create a new page around it.

12. Use structured comparison tables to earn AI citations

Structured comparison tables make important details easier for AI systems to extract, compare, summarize, and cite.

They also help readers compare options quickly.

To make comparison tables useful:

  • Use clear column names
  • Compare the same criteria for every option
  • Keep each cell short and specific
  • Include only details that help the reader decide
  • Add a short takeaway after the table
  • Update the table when features, pricing, or recommendations change

13. Build entity clarity into your content

Entity clarity means naming the specific brands, tools, people, products, and concepts your content refers to.

Clear names help AI systems connect your content to the right subject, source, and context. Vague references make that harder.

Specific naming also makes the content clearer for readers and gives search engines better context about the entities discussed.

Before publishing, check that you:

  • Name tools, products, brands, and reports specifically
  • Use the same term for the same concept throughout the page
  • Link author and contributor bios when expertise affects trust
  • Keep claims close to the source, data, or example that supports them

For example, don’t write:

“The device can help you monitor your health.”

Write:

“Apple Watch Series 11 can track your heart rate and sleep duration.”

The clearer version names the device, the action, and the specific metrics being tracked.

How to optimize content for higher credibility

Credible content gives readers, search engines, and AI systems stronger reasons to trust your page, which helps improve visibility, engagement, and the likelihood of being cited or recommended.

Here are four ways to build credibility into your existing content:

14. Include author and contributor bios

Author and contributor bios show who created or reviewed the content and why they’re qualified to cover the topic.

Include details such as the person’s name, role, area of expertise, relevant experience, and links to their author page or professional profile.

For example, Semrush author pages show who wrote the article and provide more context about the author’s expertise.

Named authors with linked bios also help AI systems identify the entity behind the content, which supports trust when they choose sources to cite.

15. Include expert insight

Including expert insight makes content more credible when the topic needs experience, judgment, or technical accuracy.

It helps readers trust your content more and gives search engines and AI systems more evidence that the content is supported by real expertise.

Interview subject matter experts or include them in the review process.

Use their input to add practical warnings, common mistakes, real examples, trade-offs, or firsthand advice.

Here’s an example of an expert quote in a Semrush article:

16. Include original research

Original research gives readers unique evidence, gives publishers something worth linking to, and gives AI systems a source they can cite.

For example, Semrush’s study “Does AI content rank well in search?” includes original research and has earned more than 1,800 backlinks.

It’s also cited by multiple AI tools.

Here are a few ways to create original research:

  • Surveys: Collect insights through Google Forms or SurveyMonkey
  • Interviews: Speak with customers, experts, or employees
  • Case studies: Share examples of customer success or problem-solving
  • Platform analytics: Analyze your own data to uncover trends

17. Use credible sources

Credible sources make your claims easier for readers to verify and give search engines and AI systems clearer attribution.

Different claims require different types of sources:

  • Rely on official documentation for product, platform, or policy claims
  • Reference original studies for statistics
  • Turn to government, academic, or institutional sources when the topic requires stronger proof

Place the source close to the claim it supports.

Avoid weak sources for important claims.

How to optimize your content for conversions

Conversion optimization turns the visibility and trust your content earns into business results, such as signups, demo requests, purchases, or contact form submissions.

Here are three ways to optimize your content for conversion:

18. Demonstrate the value of your product or service

Showing your product or service in action helps readers understand how it solves their problems.

When readers see clear, relevant use cases, they’re more likely to convert.

For example, you’ll notice many Semrush blog posts include workflows that demonstrate how to use Semrush tools to achieve specific goals.

Like this one showing readers how to find buyer intent keywords using the free keyword tool.

Semrush blog post showing a Keyword Magic Tool example within a step-by-step workflow guide

However, avoid forcing product mentions.

Only include them where they naturally fit and genuinely help readers achieve their goals.

Demonstrating real, practical value builds trust and keeps your content persuasive without sounding promotional.

19. Add social proof to build trust

Social proof (such as testimonials, case studies, and success stories) shows potential customers that others have benefited from your product or service.

It builds credibility and can make readers more confident about taking the next step.

For example, in a post about influencer marketing campaigns, you could feature a short case study showing how a brand used your influencer search software, followed by a direct customer testimonial. A clear, authentic customer quote adds weight and emotional trust.

Insider One uses this approach effectively. The company includes five-star reviews in its content to address a key audience challenge (MarTech implementation) and reassure readers that its solution delivers results.

Insider One webpage using customer reviews and five-star ratings as social proof

Reviews and testimonials can also give AI systems more third-party context when describing or comparing a brand.

20. Use calls to action that fit the reader’s journey

A call to action (CTA) tells readers what to do next.

Clear CTAs increase engagement and guide users toward conversion, such as signing up, contacting your team, or making a purchase.

Common CTAs include:

  • Sign Up Now
  • Contact Us
  • Buy Now

The key is to match the CTA with the reader’s stage in the journey.

For example, this CTA on the Semrush blog uses the CTA “Sign up now,” along with text that explains the benefits of signing up to try Traffic & Market Toolkit.

Semrush blog post with a large purple call to action for the Traffic & Market Toolkit

A CTA should:

  • Be specific and action-oriented
  • Explain the benefit of clicking
  • Fit the user’s intent and content context

Relevant, well-placed CTAs help turn the visibility and trust your content earns into signups, leads, or sales without interrupting the reading experience.

How to measure content optimization results

You can measure content optimization results by comparing how a page performs before and after you update it.

This helps you see whether your changes improved reader engagement, search visibility, AI visibility, or conversions.

The exact metrics to track depend on the page’s main job.

For instance, a blog post may need to earn search traffic, answer AI prompts, and drive newsletter signups. A product page may need to rank for commercial keywords, build trust, and drive purchases or demo requests.

Once you know the page’s job, review how it performs with readers, in search results, and across AI systems. Together, these signals show whether the page is earning engagement, visibility, and business results.

Frequently asked questions

How is optimizing for AI search different from SEO?

SEO focuses mainly on helping pages rank for relevant searches, while AI optimization places more emphasis on making specific passages easy to retrieve, summarize, and cite.

The two approaches still overlap. Clear answers, strong structure, accurate information, credible sources, and specific entity names can support both search rankings and AI visibility.

What’s the difference between content optimization and content creation?

Content creation involves producing a new page or asset, while content optimization involves improving something that already exists.

For example, creating a new guide is content creation. Updating its statistics, adding missing sections, improving its headings, and strengthening its CTA are content optimization.

How do you optimize content for Perplexity and ChatGPT specifically?

You can optimize content for Perplexity and ChatGPT by publishing accurate, current pages with clear answers, descriptive headings, specific entity names, and credible sources.

You should also allow OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot to access your site so both platforms can discover and surface your content in search results.

How often should you optimize existing content?

You should optimize existing content whenever it becomes outdated, loses visibility, stops converting, or no longer matches what readers need.

Review high-value and fast-changing pages more frequently, and update them as soon as important facts, screenshots, products, rankings, or user expectations change.

What tools should you use for content optimization?

You should use tools that help you find content gaps and improve the page, such as keyword and SERP research tools, prompt research tools, content optimization editors, readability tools, and site audit tools.

Choose each tool based on the issue you need to fix, such as missing subtopics, unclear writing, weak structure, or technical problems.
