Let me say from the very beginning, after my tests – there is no clean, one-for-one replacement for DataForSEO.
That is the first thing most “alternatives” lists get wrong. DataForSEO is not merely a Google results API. It is a collection of live SERP endpoints, keyword and domain databases, backlink data, site crawling, app and merchant data, business listings, reviews and, increasingly, AI-search data. Replacing a single endpoint is easy. Replacing that surface area without adding vendors, cost or operational work is not.
Our short answer is this, after having tested them extensively together with our partners:
- SE Ranking is the closest broad alternative for an agency or in-house SEO team that wants data APIs attached to usable projects, reports and workflows.
- SerpApi is the strongest mature alternative for developers who mainly need live search results across a very wide set of engines and Google properties.
- Serper is the value pick for straightforward Google results and AI grounding, provided its narrower scope and six-month credit expiry suit your usage.
- SearchApi is the more interesting choice when modern AI-search surfaces are the brief, not a proprietary SEO database.
- Serpstat replaces the proprietary research-data layer, not DataForSEO’s entire live-data catalog.
- For many teams, the right answer is to keep DataForSEO and replace only the endpoint or workflow that is causing trouble.
That last option is less exciting than a migration. It is also frequently the right one.

First decide which DataForSEO you are replacing
DataForSEO’s current API catalog spans far more than rankings. A useful shortlist starts with the job your application actually performs.

This distinction changes the decision. A rank tracker may only need scheduled SERPs. A competitive-research product may need a licensed historical database. An AI agent may need five fresh Google results and nothing else. Those are three different architectures, even if procurement labels all of them “SEO data.”
It also explains why buying the platform with the most endpoints can be a mistake. Breadth has value only when you use it. Conversely, a cheap SERP API becomes expensive if you later have to add a backlink provider, a crawler, a keyword database and the engineering to reconcile all four.
How we assessed the alternatives
We reviewed vendors’ public pricing, API documentation, product pages, usage restrictions, caching or redistribution terms, service claims and recent changelogs. Where Search Engine Watch has recent hands-on experience with the underlying platform, we use it and link to the full review.
We did not run a controlled, production-scale benchmark of every API. We therefore do not award invented accuracy scores or repeat latency claims as observed fact. Speed, database size and uptime figures attributed to vendors are exactly that: vendor claims. The sensible way to validate them is with your own representative query set, which we outline later in this guide.
Our verdicts weigh five things:
- Fit for the stated workload.
- The real billing unit and cost predictability.
- Data and endpoint breadth.
- Licensing, caching and downstream-use constraints.
- Migration and operating cost, not just the invoice.
Commercial relationships should never determine an SEW recommendation. If a link is monetized, that should be disclosed separately and should not change the ordering or verdict.
The pricing comparison most articles should not make
“Cost per 1,000” looks objective. In this category, it often is not.
One vendor bills a query. Another bills a returned SERP page. Another bills rows. Another calls its internal unit a credit. Some charge only for successful responses; some make a cached response free; some add a charge for deeper results, JavaScript rendering or an AI Overview. Credits may expire in a month, a quarter, six months or never.
DataForSEO itself illustrates the problem. Its Google SERP pricing starts at $0.60 per 1,000 Standard queue tasks for a base request returning 10 results. Priority is $1.20 per 1,000 and Live is $2 per 1,000. Greater depth and optional features can change the bill; requesting an AI Summary carries a separate charge. A $0.0006 queued lookup and a live, 100-result, feature-rich lookup are not the same product.
When SEW compared keyword-research APIs in 2017, cost per million units was a useful organizing measure. The market has since moved toward mixed data products, AI endpoints and more varied licensing. A unit count without a data contract now creates as much confusion as clarity.
Public entry pricing gives us useful orientation, but not a clean race:

The better calculation is:
Effective cost per 1,000 usable responses = total spend ÷ responses that satisfy your data contract × 1,000
“Usable” matters. Define required depth, location accuracy, device, language, parsed features, freshness, response time and acceptable null fields first. Then include retries, failed requests, minimum commitments, expired credits, storage and the labor required to normalize schemas.
The cheapest sticker price can still produce the most expensive system.
1. SE Ranking: the closest broad alternative for an SEO team
Best for: Agencies and in-house teams that want an API, rank tracking, audits, reporting and project workflows in one environment.
SE Ranking is the closest option on this list to replacing a meaningful portion of DataForSEO without assembling a stack. Its APIs cover domain and keyword research, backlinks, site audits, AI-search data and project management. It also offers an MCP server and integrations aimed at AI and automation workflows. The standalone API pricing begins with a $50 top-up for 250,000 credits; the same page says purchased Wallet credits do not expire. Subscription and enterprise routes are available for sustained use.
The important difference is architectural. DataForSEO is built like a data supplier. SE Ranking is a working SEO platform that also exposes data. That is an advantage if analysts live in the interface and automations need to create projects, pull rankings and move outputs into reports. It is less compelling if you are building a customer-facing data product that needs high throughput, fine-grained endpoint spend controls or unusual vertical datasets.
In our full SE Ranking review, we found a polished platform with strong workflow consolidation, broad automation options and separate models for project automation and raw data. We also noted that DataForSEO remains the stronger fit for serious data products and genuine pay-as-you-go infrastructure. That distinction should drive the choice.
What it replaces well: An agency stack built around recurring rankings, research, audits, backlinks and reports.
What it does not: DataForSEO’s entire catalog of merchant, app, business, review and other specialist endpoints. Its credit model also needs workload testing; a headline number of credits does not tell you how many useful rows your particular calls will return.
Editor’s take: Choose SE Ranking when the people and the API need to share a platform. Do not choose it merely because its feature list looks long.
2. SerpApi: the mature developer choice for live search results
Best for: Products that need stable, structured access to many search engines and Google properties, with documentation and support built for developers.
SerpApi is a much cleaner comparison when the part of DataForSEO you use is the SERP API. It supports a large set of engines and surfaces, including conventional search, maps, shopping, travel and newer AI experiences. Its public plans range from a free allowance of 250 searches to $25 for 1,000 monthly searches, with larger production tiers. The company says errored, failed and cached searches do not consume quota and advertises a 99.95% SLA. See the current plans and billing rules.
Its advantage is not bargain-basement pricing. It is product maturity around search extraction: a large engine catalog, consistent JSON, playgrounds and documentation, account-level controls and support. For a team whose engineering time costs more than the raw calls, that can be the better bargain.
The boundary is equally clear. SerpApi is not an Ahrefs-style backlink index, a Semrush-style competitive database or a DataForSEO Labs substitute. If a product needs search volume, historical domain rankings, link graphs and live SERPs, SerpApi covers only the last part.
There is also a legal-development footnote buyers should not ignore. Google sued SerpApi in December 2025 over its data-collection practices, as Reuters reported. A July 2026 federal-court order dismissed key DMCA claims, some with leave to amend; that was an interim ruling, not the end of the dispute. Separate Reddit litigation against multiple scraping providers has also survived substantial dismissal arguments. None of this establishes that buying a SERP API is unlawful. It does mean enterprise buyers should review their exact use, contract and indemnity with counsel rather than treating a vendor badge as a complete risk analysis.
SerpApi offers a U.S. Legal Shield on qualifying plans. Read its conditions and liability limits; do not reduce the decision to the headline coverage number.
Editor’s take: The best default for a developer who wants search results rather than SEO software, and is willing to pay for a mature integration surface.
3. Serper: excellent economics for a narrow Google workload
Best for: AI grounding, lightweight rank checks and products that need fast, simple Google results without an SEO database behind them.
Serper’s proposition is refreshingly legible. It offers search, images, news, maps, places, videos, shopping, Scholar, patents and autocomplete endpoints. New accounts receive 2,500 free queries. Public packages begin at $50 for 50,000 queries and fall from $1 to $0.30 per 1,000 at larger volumes. The company advertises one-to-two-second responses. All of those are vendor-published figures on Serper’s pricing page, not results from an SEW benchmark.
For an LLM feature that needs a small set of fresh links, or a compact monitoring tool centered on Google, the simplicity is persuasive. There is less product to buy and less schema to learn.
The catch is the same simplicity. Serper does not replace DataForSEO Labs, backlinks, crawls or its broader business and app datasets. Credits expire after six months, which changes the economics for bursty or experimental workloads. A package advertised at $1 per 1,000 is not really $1 per 1,000 if half of it expires unused. The official expiry policy is enough reason to model utilization carefully; a tiny collection of public reviews is not a substitute for that math.
Editor’s take: Our value pick for a well-defined Google retrieval job. A false economy if “we may need the rest later” becomes a second procurement cycle three months after launch.
4. SearchApi: strongest when AI-search surfaces are the product
Best for: Teams building around AI Mode, AI assistants and a broad collection of live search experiences.
SearchApi sits in the same general category as SerpApi, but its current differentiation is easier to see in newer search surfaces. Its catalog includes conventional Google results alongside Google AI Mode, Gemini, Bing Copilot, Perplexity, ChatGPT-related endpoints, ads libraries, maps, travel, apps and ecommerce sources. Public pricing begins at $40 for 10,000 successful requests per month and reaches lower unit rates on larger plans. It advertises a 99.9% SLA and bills successful HTTP 200 responses; details are on the pricing page.
The company responded to Google’s removal of the old num=100 behavior by introducing a dedicated rank-tracker endpoint, an example of why a vendor’s adaptation speed matters as much as its endpoint count. Its September 2025 product update also documents structured references for AI Mode.
SearchApi is compelling when an application must follow search as it fragments into answers, assistants, maps and vertical tabs. It is not a substitute for a proprietary corpus of keyword history, backlink relationships or crawl intelligence. Pairing it with Ahrefs, Semrush or another database may be necessary—and that paired cost is the honest comparison with DataForSEO.
Editor’s take: Put SearchApi on the shortlist when “SERP” now means AI answers and multiple live search surfaces. If all you need is ten blue links, you may be paying for optionality.
5. Serpstat: the value suite-plus-API option
Best for: Small and midsize teams that want keyword, backlink, audit and rank-tracking data with an accessible working platform.
Serpstat exposes keyword research, competitive analysis, backlink data, technical-audit and rank-tracking functions. API and MCP access begin on its Team plan, not the entry Individual plan. Current annual pricing starts at $50 per month equivalent for Individual and $100 for Team, with larger credit pools at higher tiers. See Serpstat’s current plans and API overview.
Our long-term Serpstat review found a capable, unusually broad product for the money, with strong API and MCP options. We also found it less polished than the leading suites, with occasional data that called for a second look. That is a useful trade: sophisticated teams can extract a lot of value, while teams expecting a completely frictionless enterprise experience may not.
Serpstat is a better alternative to the combination of an SEO tool and several modest automations than it is to DataForSEO as an embedded data supplier. Its vendor-reported database counts are large, but counts from different companies are not standardized and should never substitute for coverage tests in your markets.
Editor’s take: The practical budget choice when humans use the suite and scripts extend it. Less convincing as the core dependency of a high-volume commercial data product.
Specialist alternatives worth considering
Some DataForSEO workloads are better replaced by a specialist than by one of the broad choices above.

SISTRIX’s pricing starts at €119 per month, with limited API access at Plus and full API access at Professional. Its API limitations include a 300-request-per-minute rate and restrictions on sharing data with third parties without authorization. This is a good example of why “has an API” is not the same as “may power my SaaS.”
Similarweb makes sense when stakeholder language such as “competitor performance” actually means traffic share, audience and market behavior. Its Web Traffic API documentation directs customers to an add-on or API-only package and flags separate licensing for data shown to external users.
Majestic remains a focused option for link analysis. Its API plan includes 100 million analysis units and its own historical link index and metrics. Buy it for that specialization, not to avoid a multi-vendor stack.
