6 best SEO courses that are actually worth taking in 2026

Search Engine Watch was comparing online SEO training options back in 2008. At the time, paying roughly $150 for a beginner course could be the easiest way to get organized instruction and access to an expert.

That is no longer the bargain it once was. Today, excellent explanations of crawling, search intent, keyword research and on-page SEO are available free. A paid SEO course has to offer something more valuable than access to information. It should give you a coherent path, realistic work, expert feedback, specialist depth, an active peer group or enough accountability to get you across the finish line.

That principle guided this list.

We did not pretend to spend six months completing every program from beginning to end. I read fast, very fast, but speed-reading a curriculum is not the same thing as doing every assignment. Instead, we inspected the current syllabus, accessible lessons and supporting material; checked the instructor’s professional record; compared price, workload and update signals; and read independent learner discussions alongside the testimonials selected by each provider. Where a course had an obvious limitation, we kept it in the review.

Our overall recommendation is Ahrefs’ SEO Course for Beginners. It is short, clear and free, making it the best first course for most readers. It is not the deepest option here. That is precisely why it works as a starting point rather than becoming another 40-hour playlist you never finish.

The best SEO courses at a glance

Course Best for Current cost The important caveat
Ahrefs SEO Course for Beginners The best free starting point Free Short on technical SEO and hands-on assessment
Semrush Academy Free certificates and current topic modules Free A library, not one coherent end-to-end program
UC Davis SEO Specialization Structured study and career changers Usually $59/month through Coursera Plus; promotions vary Longer commitment, and some sections age faster than others
BrightLocal Academy Local SEO Free Too specialized to be your only SEO education
Yoast SEO Academy WordPress site owners and editors Beginner course free; full academy included with Yoast SEO Premium at $118.80/year, excluding VAT Strong WordPress and Yoast product bias
Noble Desktop SEO Bootcamp Live teaching and accountability $650 Costly for 12 hours of broad foundational training

Prices and course availability were checked on August 22, 2026. Providers change prices, bundles and promotions regularly, so confirm the checkout page before buying.

How we chose the courses

There is no useful way to rank every SEO course by video hours or star rating alone. A five-hour course can be more useful than a 50-hour one if it gives a beginner the right sequence and gets them working on a real site. Marketplace ratings are also easy to misread: they often reflect production quality, instructor likability and expectations at a particular price, rather than whether a learner can diagnose an indexing problem six months later.

We evaluated each option on five factors:

  1. Curriculum and currency (25%): Does it teach durable search principles while acknowledging modern realities such as Core Web Vitals, structured data and AI-assisted search experiences? Does the provider show signs of maintaining it?
  2. Applied learning (25%): Are there exercises, worksheets, projects, audits, quizzes or live problems? Watching is not practice.
  3. Instructor credibility (20%): Is the teacher identifiable, and is there evidence that they have practiced or taught the work beyond selling the course?
  4. Independent learner signals (15%): What do learners say away from the provider’s own testimonials? We treated Reddit threads and third-party course reviews as signals, not verified outcomes.
  5. Value and transparency (15%): Is the price visible? Is the workload clear? Does the buyer know what is included, how long access lasts and what the program does not teach?

We favored courses that are available to join now. We excluded programs with an unclear syllabus, unstable access, exaggerated income promises or too little evidence beyond testimonials. We also declined to convert seller-selected praise into an “independent” rating.

This is a review of the course offering, not a guarantee of a learner’s result. SEO skill is demonstrated through decisions and outcomes on actual websites. A certificate can show that somebody finished a defined path; it cannot prove that they can prioritize an audit, negotiate with developers or recover lost organic traffic.

1. Ahrefs SEO Course for Beginners: best overall free SEO course

6 best SEO courses that are actually worth taking in 2026

Cost: Free
Format: 14 lessons across five modules
Published workload: About two hours
Instructor: Sam Oh
Certificate: Not for this beginner course; Ahrefs has a separate product certification

Ahrefs’ SEO Course for Beginners is the easiest recommendation on this list because the commitment is proportionate to the outcome. It promises a compact introduction and delivers a sensible sequence: the basics, keyword research, on-page optimization, link building and a brief look at technical SEO.

Sam Oh, Ahrefs’ vice president of marketing, is an unusually good fit for an introductory program. His teaching is concise, the examples are visual and the lessons tend to explain the decision behind an action instead of merely listing tool clicks. The course is available without charge or sign-up, so there is little friction between deciding to learn and starting.

The curriculum handles search intent, keyword difficulty, page optimization and outreach well enough to give a new site owner a working vocabulary. It is also short enough that a learner can complete it and begin applying the material over a weekend. One recent learner discussion praised the course for being short and direct, and the course has a 4.7 rating from 43 reviews on Class Central. Neither data point proves mastery, but both fit what we saw in the material: its main strength is clarity.

The limitations matter. The technical SEO portion is only an introduction. There is no substantial capstone, no instructor feedback and no assessed website project. Some examples naturally lead into the Ahrefs product, although the concepts are not useful only to Ahrefs customers. Beginners who want proof of completion should also note that the Ahrefs Certification is a separate, tool-focused exam. It includes 67 questions, allows one hour, requires a 75% score and is valid for one year.

Who should take it: A beginner, content marketer, founder or editor who wants the essential framework before touching a larger curriculum.

Who should skip it: An SEO already comfortable with intent, on-page work and basic crawling. Go directly to a technical, local or strategic specialization.

SEW verdict: Take this course first, then put it away and work on a site. Its brevity is an advantage only if you use the time saved to practice.

2. Semrush Academy: best free SEO certificates and current modules

Cost: Free
Format: A library of short, self-paced courses
Workload: Varies by course; many current modules take roughly one hour
Instructors: Includes Brian Dean, Aleyda Solis and Semrush specialists
Certificate: Available after the relevant quiz or exam

Semrush Academy’s SEO catalog is broad enough to be either useful or paralyzing. It contains beginner material, content-led SEO, local SEO, keyword research, on-page work and newer modules addressing AI search. The upside is obvious: the courses are free, recognized instructors appear throughout the library, and learners can earn shareable completion certificates. The downside is that a catalog is not a curriculum. Selecting six overlapping courses is not the same thing as following a coherent learning path.

We would use the Academy in a deliberate sequence. Start with a principles-led introduction such as Brian Dean’s SEO Crash Course. Follow it with a content course, then choose one specialization that matches your actual work. The current catalog includes subjects such as local SEO with Aleyda Solis, on-page SEO and AI search, keyword research and an “AI Search Operating System.” Several of the newer units advertise approximately an hour of material, which makes them useful updates rather than career programs in their own right.

Independent reactions are mixed in a believable way. Learners often describe Semrush Academy as an excellent springboard and appreciate the free certificates. More critical practitioners say some technical material is too shallow. Both judgments can be true: the platform is very good at getting a marketer oriented, but it is not our first choice for becoming a technical SEO specialist.

The other caution is product gravity. A training library funded by an SEO suite will understandably demonstrate that suite. Learn the underlying task, such as diagnosing intent or auditing a page, and then reproduce it with another tool or a manual method. This keeps product familiarity from masquerading as SEO judgment.

Who should take it: Marketers who want a free, guided route with lightweight proof of completion, or practitioners looking for a quick update on one topic.

Who should skip it: Anyone likely to collect certificates instead of producing work. The badge has limited value without a site, audit or case study behind it.

SEW verdict: The best free certificate option, provided you select a small route through the catalog. We recommend no more than three consecutive modules before applying what you learned.

3. UC Davis Search Engine Optimization Specialization: best structured path for career changers

Cost: Usually included with Coursera Plus at $59 per month; temporary promotions vary
Format: Five-course, self-paced specialization
Published workload: Approximately four to six months
Instructors: Rebekah May and Eric Enge
Certificate: Yes, issued through Coursera and UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education

The UC Davis Search Engine Optimization Specialization is the closest option here to a conventional program of study. It starts with an introduction, moves through fundamentals and website optimization, covers content and social strategy, and ends with a capstone. UC Davis describes it as a four-to-six-month path.

That structure is the reason to pay. The individual courses list workloads of roughly nine to 16 hours, and the final project asks learners to bring several skills together: technical review, competitor and keyword analysis, a content plan and a presentation. A completed capstone can be turned into a portfolio artifact after removing any confidential or copyrighted material. That is more useful to a hiring manager than a certificate displayed without context.

Rebekah May and Eric Enge bring credible industry experience, and the current course pages reference topics such as Core Web Vitals, E-E-A-T and rich results. With hundreds of thousands of enrollments and thousands of ratings, the specialization also has a much larger feedback base than most independent SEO courses.

The reviews are not uniformly glowing, which is healthy. One learner said the capstone helped them build a portfolio and land an initial SEO role, while independent course reviews flag theory-heavy or dated sections. These are individual experiences, not a representative outcome study. SEO examples age quickly, especially interface demonstrations. We would keep Google’s SEO Starter Guide open beside the course and verify any prescriptive claim against current documentation.

Do not be misled by course titles containing “Google SEO.” This is a UC Davis program delivered through Coursera, not an official Google SEO certification. The usual Coursera Plus price is $59 per month or $399 per year, although promotions change. A focused learner can reduce the total by finishing within fewer billing cycles; somebody who needs more time should compare the annual option before enrolling.

Who should take it: A career changer or junior marketer who wants deadlines, sequence, assignments and a substantial final project.

Who should skip it: A working SEO who needs one current answer this week, or anyone who already knows the fundamentals and dislikes academic pacing.

SEW verdict: The strongest structured program in this list. Buy it for the sequence and capstone, not for the mistaken idea that the certificate alone will get a job.

4. BrightLocal Academy: best local SEO course collection

Cost: Free
Format: Self-paced courses, quizzes and specialist collections
Workload: Varies; the local SEO strategy course is about 90 minutes
Instructors: Includes Greg Gifford, Claire Carlile, Dana DiTomaso and Niki Mosier
Certificate: Yes

BrightLocal Academy is the strongest free specialist library for people whose customers or clients depend on geographic intent. The curriculum covers the parts of local search that generic courses reduce to one lesson: Google Business Profile work, reviews, citations, local content, reporting, multi-location challenges and agency processes.

The Complete Guide to Local SEO with Greg Gifford provides a beginner route. The more applied Create a Winning Local SEO Strategy for Any Business lists 12 modules, quizzes, an exam and two worksheets in roughly 90 minutes. The roster also includes working specialists such as Claire Carlile, Dana DiTomaso and Niki Mosier, so the catalog is not dependent on a single point of view.

Independent recommendations commonly describe the Academy as surprisingly competitive with paid local SEO introductions. Practitioners also point out what course material tends to omit: the messy spreadsheets, client access problems, verification failures, duplicate listings and operational routines that appear only when managing actual locations. That is a fair limitation, not a reason to reject the program.

BrightLocal sells local SEO software, so demonstrations naturally sit within its ecosystem. As with Semrush, separate the underlying method from the interface. Rebuild a citation log in your own sheet, create a manual review process and test whether you can explain the strategy without opening the platform.

For additional context, SEW’s eight-step local search strategy is older but still useful as a comparison point. Use current platform documentation for features and policies that may have changed.

Who should take it: In-house marketers at location-based businesses, local consultants, franchise teams and agencies onboarding junior staff.

Who should skip it: A publisher, SaaS marketer or ecommerce SEO with no meaningful local intent. Take a broader foundation instead.

SEW verdict: The best free local SEO education hub we found. Its certificates are a bonus; the worksheets and specialist coverage are the real value.

5. Yoast SEO Academy: best for WordPress site owners and editors

Cost: Beginner course free; full Academy included with Yoast SEO Premium at $118.80 per year, excluding VAT
Format: Self-paced videos, readings, quizzes and downloadable resources
Published beginner workload: About two hours across 20 video clips
Instructor: Yoast’s education team
Certificate: Yes

Yoast SEO Academy earns its place because it meets WordPress users where they work. The free SEO for Beginners course lists approximately two hours of video, 20 clips, quizzes, PDFs, a cheat sheet and a certificate. The paid Academy expands into technical, local and international SEO, structured data, AI for SEO, copywriting and detailed plugin training.

The free program is an approachable introduction for a site owner who has installed WordPress and does not know where to begin. It can also bring editors to a shared vocabulary. The full library is bundled with Yoast SEO Premium, currently listed at $118.80 per year excluding VAT, which changes the value calculation. A team already buying the plugin receives a substantial course library at no additional course price.

The obvious limitation is product bias. Yoast teaches through WordPress and frequently through its own interface. That is convenient for the intended audience, but it can make a learner mistake the plugin’s colored indicators for search engine rules. A green bullet is not a Google ranking signal. It is a prompt based on a simplified check, and sensible writing sometimes requires ignoring it.

Course-specific independent feedback is thinner than it is for Coursera or Ahrefs. We therefore put more weight on the accessible beginner material, the transparent lesson structure and the team’s longstanding publishing record than on testimonials hosted by Yoast. The course gives WordPress users a practical setup, but it is not our choice for platform-agnostic technical depth.

SEW’s guide to setting up SEO on WordPress can serve as a quick companion, although individual screenshots and settings should always be checked against the current plugin version.

Who should take it: WordPress site owners, bloggers, editors and teams that already use or plan to buy Yoast Premium.

Who should skip it: A specialist working across enterprise stacks, or a learner who wants to understand SEO independently of a CMS and plugin.

SEW verdict: The best fit for WordPress-first learners. Use the checks as teaching prompts, not a scoreboard that replaces editorial judgment.

6. Noble Desktop SEO Bootcamp: best live course for accountability

Cost: $650
Format: Live online or in-person in New York City
Published workload: 12 hours
Class model: Small-group instruction with a free retake
Certificate: Digital certificate of completion

Noble Desktop’s SEO Bootcamp is for the learner who already knows that a free self-paced course will remain open in a forgotten browser tab. The 12-hour program is offered live online and in New York City, with small classes, software access and a free retake. It covers keyword strategy, on-page optimization, links, content and reporting.

The material is broad rather than specialist, which makes the $650 price look high beside free beginner courses. The buyer is paying for scheduled teaching, the ability to ask a person a question and the pressure to do the work at a fixed time. Independent feedback about Noble Desktop tends to praise knowledgeable instructors, mini projects and the hands-on class format. Class Central’s detailed review similarly emphasizes the guided experience rather than a uniquely advanced syllabus.

There are two caveats. First, live instruction is instructor-dependent. Ask who will teach the dates you are considering and read that person’s current background. Second, the sales page is less explicit than we would like about how the class treats AI search, answer engines and the changing search results page. That does not make the fundamentals obsolete, but a flagship live course should be able to explain what has been revised recently.

Time zone and schedule also matter. The live online sessions follow Eastern Time. International learners should calculate the actual class hours before buying, not after receiving the calendar invitation.

Who should take it: A beginner who learns through conversation, needs a fixed schedule and values the chance to retake the class.

Who should skip it: A disciplined self-directed learner, an experienced SEO or anybody seeking deep technical specialization.

SEW verdict: The best accountability option on the list, but only if live access changes how you learn. The curriculum alone does not justify the premium.

Popular SEO courses we did not rank

Excluding a familiar name is not a declaration that nobody can learn from it. It means the current offer did not clear the same combination of availability, transparency, value and independent evidence.

HubSpot SEO Certification

HubSpot’s academy has historically been an easy free recommendation, but community support threads in June 2026 reported access problems, while a staff response suggested the course might be retired or replaced by newer AEO material. With stable enrollment unclear during our check, we would not send readers into a broken or transitional path. If HubSpot publishes a stable replacement with a transparent syllabus, it deserves reassessment.

Moz SEO Essentials

The standalone Moz SEO Essentials certification has been listed at $595 for roughly six to eight hours of material. That is hard to justify when several strong foundations are free, and independent discussions question the value at that price. Moz now also offers a shorter SEO Professional Certificate path through LinkedIn Learning, which may be a better fit for learners who already have LinkedIn Learning access. We would compare both checkout totals before paying for the standalone product.

SEO Blueprint

Glen Allsopp’s SEO Blueprint has a strong reputation among experienced affiliates and site builders, but the official site currently operates through a waitlist and opens only periodically. A course that cannot be joined now is not useful in a current “best courses to take” ranking. It may be worth revisiting when the next cohort has confirmed dates, pricing and a current syllabus.

SEO MBA

SEO MBA is a thoughtful business and leadership specialization for senior practitioners. It is not a broad learn-SEO program, and its current site says the project is going on pause, with a time-limited bundle. That makes it an interesting resource for directors, not a stable flagship recommendation for the general reader.

Marketplace courses and high-ticket “guru” programs

There are capable teachers on Udemy and similar marketplaces. The problem is consistency. Discounts change constantly, course update dates can reveal little about how much was revised, and a large star count does not establish that the material reflects present search behavior. Evaluate a specific instructor, sample lesson and change log rather than buying “the bestseller.”

We also excluded high-ticket programs whose main proof consisted of income claims, countdown timers or seller-controlled testimonials. A course asking for four figures should be able to show a detailed syllabus, instructor identity, access terms and realistic sample instruction before collecting payment.
