The Punjab government has eliminated 101 vacant posts across provincial departments and the South Punjab Secretariat, in one of the largest rounds of post abolition carried out under the provinces ongoing austerity drive.
The move follows a Finance Department decision dated July 31, 2026, and was formalised through a notification issued by the Additional Chief Secretary Punjab after government approval.
The cuts span nearly every major administrative department in the province, with health and education departments among the hardest hit. Within Punjab central departments, School Education lost the most posts at six, while Finance, Health and Population, Home, and Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education each had five posts abolished.
Smaller cuts were spread across a wide range of departments. The Chief Minister Office and Local Government and Community Development each lost three section officer posts, while Agriculture, Communication and Works, Energy, Excise, Food Safety, Higher Education, Irrigation, Housing and Urban Development, and the Planning and Development Board each had two posts eliminated.
A further nine departments, including Industries, Information and Culture, Livestock, Mines and Minerals, Public Prosecution, and Women Development, each lost a single post.
The South Punjab Secretariat accounted for a substantial share of the total reduction, with its Health and Population Department alone losing eight posts, the highest for any single department in the exercise.
Finance, Higher Education, and School Education within the secretariat each had four posts abolished, while Irrigation and Local Government lost three apiece. Agriculture, Communication and Works, Forestry and Wildlife, Livestock, Planning and Development, Services and General Administration, and Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education each saw two posts cut, with Home and Housing losing one each.
All affected departments have been formally notified of the decision and instructed to proceed with the necessary administrative action.
