Anthropic’s newly confirmed custom silicon team is hiring people to do one specific thing: take a chip from a blank specification to a production ramp. A Silicon Engineer listing and a Technical Program Manager, Silicon listing on Anthropic’s careers portal describe an end-to-end program running from architecture definition through tapeout, first-silicon bring-up, and what the TPM role calls the “path to production readiness.”

The company confirmed the effort on August 5, 2026, in statements to Business Insider and TechCrunch, saying it plans to co-design hardware and models so Claude runs faster and more efficiently, while keeping a “multi-chip approach” in which hardware from other companies remains central to its scaling. Both listings are live now — the Silicon Engineer role in San Francisco, New York, and Seattle, the TPM role in San Francisco and New York.

The engineer listing frames the program as a deepening of existing partner work: “We work from the chip level up with our silicon partners, and we are now deepening that investment by building a custom silicon team.” It asks for engineers who have personally shipped silicon and can make, in its words, “consequential calls without a large organization behind them.”

The TPM listing is blunter about ownership. “Anthropic is building custom silicon for Claude,” it opens, adding that the hardware its models run on is “one of the most direct levers we have on capability, cost, and reliability — and we’ve decided to take design authority over it ourselves.”

The listings describe a partner-heavy build, not a self-contained chip shop

Read together, the two postings describe a small in-house team directing a network of outside contractors rather than Anthropic standing up its own full design organization. The TPM role is described as “a partner-heavy program by design,” driving external engagements across ASIC design services, intellectual-property vendors, a foundry, and packaging and test contractors. The engineer listing asks for experience working with those same categories of partners, “including reviewing their work and holding a technical bar.”

The TPM’s responsibilities include the decisions that define a chip program’s economics: running technology and IP selection, and landing what the listing calls the “build / buy / license calls” with engineering leadership. The engineer role covers the same ground from the technical side, including where Anthropic takes design authority versus relying on partners. No foundry or design partner is named in either posting; The Information has reported that Anthropic has discussed Samsung as a potential manufacturing partner.

The program’s budget for talent is now public

Because the postings sit on Anthropic’s own careers portal, they carry salary bands that put a public price on the program’s talent build:

  • Silicon Engineer: $320,000–$485,000 per year
  • Technical Program Manager, Silicon: $365,000–$435,000 per year

The engineer listing covers eight domains — front-end design, pre-silicon verification, physical design, design for test, analog and mixed-signal, technology and foundry, design infrastructure, and packaging with signal and power integrity — and says Anthropic is “opening searches across the key domains,” with each hire covering “a large surface.”

Both postings also ask candidates to bring working judgment about AI-assisted engineering. The TPM role expects its hire to “push hard on what AI-assisted program management can look like,” and the engineer role asks for “clear ideas about where they help and where they do not” — a chip team that will use Claude to help build the silicon Claude runs on.

What this adds to the record

Anthropic’s confirmation on August 5, 2026 established that the team exists; the two live listings establish what it is being built to do. The TPM posting sets the milestone sequence the program will run — architecture closure, RTL freeze, design-verification milestones, IP delivery, physical-design closure, test insertion, tapeout, and post-silicon bring-up — and hands one person ownership of that integrated plan. Its minimum qualifications require eight or more years of silicon program management and “direct ownership of at least one program that taped out and reached production.”

The engineer listing’s preferred qualifications point at the target hardware: experience on machine-learning accelerators or other “large, high-bandwidth designs,” and depth in memory subsystems, on-die interconnect, numerics, or low-power design. The TPM listing adds familiarity with hardware-software co-design, “working directly with compiler, kernel, or runtime teams,” matching the company’s stated plan to co-design chips and models side by side.

Neither posting names a chip, a process node, or a schedule, and the TPM role notes there is “no process to inherit.” What the listings make concrete is the operating model Anthropic has chosen for the effort: a small internal team holding design authority, surrounded by contracted ASIC, IP, foundry, and packaging capacity, hiring people who have taken at least one chip all the way from specification to production.
