Time and Date
Apple always holds its events at 10 am PT, with iPhone launches usually taking place on the second Tuesday or Wednesday of September. This year, that is September 8 and 9.
Because Monday, September 7, is Labor Day in the United States, it’s likely that Apple will opt for Wednesday, the 9th, for its event, giving attendees the prior business day to travel. Otherwise, it could push it to the following week, likely Tuesday, September 15.
The John Ternus show
Apple CEO Tim Cook is going to retire from the position on September 1, remaining on the company’s board of directors. He has named John Ternus, who was most recently senior vice president of hardware engineering, as his successor.
That means this is the first Apple Special Event in which Ternus will be the headliner, introducing the start of the event and thanking everyone at the end. Individual products are likely to be demonstrated by other Apple executives—they always are—but this is a big opportunity to shake up the format of Apple events in general.
Will we see a return to live stage events? Will the structure and format of the pre-recorded video events change at all? Or will Ternus be essentially interchangeable for Tim Cook, with nothing else about these big product reveals changing at all? Will Apple make a “Turn” pun in its event invitation? We’ll have to wait and see.
