Asia’s Cloud Infrastructure Boom

Asia’s digital backbone is expanding at a staggering pace, quietly redrawing the global map of enterprise cloud infrastructure. From the dense mega-clusters of Beijing and Shanghai to the booming, policy-backed data centers taking root across India, cloud service providers are pouring massive capital into local connectivity.

As new availability zones launch across emerging markets and domestic tech giants entrench their dominance, the region is quickly becoming the global focal point for cloud expansion.

Here’s a look at the cloud connectivity landscape across Asia, powered by data and analysis from TeleGeography’s Cloud and WAN Research Service.

Asia’s cloud connectivity

As of Q1 2026, Asia was home to about 300 active availability zones spanning over 100 cloud regions. These numbers are poised to increase with numerous upcoming projects. In the next year, 14 new availability zones across 6 cloud regions are scheduled to launch across the region. The new cloud connectivity landscape will extend across India, Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan and Thailand.

Shanghai and Beijing stand out in Asia by featuring close to 50 on-ramp facilities each. Singapore holds the third position with over 30 on-ramp facilities. Note that the top positions are held by Chinese cities, due primarily to the government’s initiatives and support for cloud computing.

Alibaba boasts a robust cloud connectivity presence in Asia, as represented in turquoise in the figure below. Their number of on-ramps in major cities is notably higher compared to other Cloud Service Providers (CSPs), particularly in their own metropolitan areas such as Beijing and Hong Kong.

Cloud zones across Asia

With more than 150 availability zones dispersed across over 45 cloud regions, China boasts over 50% of all the availability zones and close to 45% of all the cloud regions in Asia. In comparison, their closest competitors (Japan, Singapore, India) had only 32, 24 and 22 availability zones across 12, 9 and 11 cloud regions respectively. The development of China’s cloud infrastructure is attributed to Alibaba Cloud, Tencent Cloud and Huawei Cloud, the top three Chinese CSPs.

India deserves attention, as it has witnessed a surge in investment in its data center market, driven by its huge market potential and a comparatively lenient policy and regulatory environment. As mentioned, they have a total of 22 availability zones across 11 cloud regions as of Q1 2026, poised to overtake Singapore’s position for data centers in the region.

Undoubtedly, Asia’s cloud landscape is actively transforming. While China and its domestic heavyweights maintain a formidable lead in infrastructure, the aggressive rollout of new availability zones and India’s rapid ascent point to a much more diversified digital future. For global enterprises and investors alike, keeping a close eye on these shifting hubs of connectivity will be crucial as the region cements its position as the world’s premier cloud powerhouse.
