In 2010, there was a movie called The Last Airbender, which purported to be an adaptation of the beloved Nickelodeon show. However, the M. Night Shyamalan movie felt so soulless and devoid of humor that it was considered one of the worst live-action adaptations ever. Vocal Avatar fans hated it to the point of denying that it even existed.
Now, in 2026, there’s another movie with “The Last Airbender” in its title, and the situation couldn’t be more different. Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, premiering on Paramount Plus on July 25, is an animated sequel to the original show. Creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko have crafted a new story that takes place 13 years after Aang defeats Fire Lord Ozai. And this time, none of the characters’ names are mispronounced.
In Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, Team Avatar is all grown up and in their twenties. Aang (Eric Nam) is joined by Katara (Jessica Matten), a Waterbender and his girlfriend; Sokka (Román Zaragoza), a warrior and Katara’s brother; Toph (Dionne Quan), an Earthbender who invented Metalbending; and Zuko (Steven Yeun), a Firebender and the current Fire Lord. The heroes go on a quest after discovering Tagah (Dave Bautista), an Airbender who was frozen in ice.
That’s right, the title is a lie: Aang isn’t the last Airbender after all.
Interestingly, Tagah is never mentioned in the sequel series, Legend of Korra. The only other Airbenders we know of are Korra, Aang’s son Tenzin, and Tenzin’s four children (until the events of Harmonic Convergence, which bring back many more Air Nomads).
Before now, we only saw glimpses of adult Aang in flashbacks. Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender gives us a full adventure with the original Team Avatar at the height of their powers — something that would have been incredible to witness in 2010. Still, better late than never.
The new movie was leaked in April, causing a crisis at Paramount. But for the fans who had already waited sixteen years to see a new ATLA movie, a few more months was hardly much to ask for.
2026 is a great year for fans of Team Avatar
When Mark Hamill first saw the script for Avatar the Last Airbender, he thought the show was doomed. “This thing’s gonna get canceled in 4 episodes,” said the voice of Fire Lord Ozai, “It’s too smart.”
But now, 21 years after the show debuted, the Avatar Universe is bigger than ever. This year, we’ve already gotten season 2 of the Netflix adaptation of the original show. Now, in addition to this new movie, we’ll also be getting a new series about the next Avatar.
The first trailer for Avatar: Seven Havens was released this week, and it introduces a post-apocalyptic era. Korra’s successor, Pavi (Saheli Khan), and her twin, Nisha (Aishu Devan), navigate a world where the Avatar is seen as a force of destruction, in the new series debuting on Oct. 9 on Paramount Plus.
Whether you’re a diehard fan of the old Gaang, or you’re hungry for a story with a new cast of characters, there’s never been a better time to be a fan of the Avatarverse.
