The Central Netherlands Control Room is launching a pilot using drones for incidents at five business parks in Veenendaal. During the pilot, live drone footage is immediately available to the control room and to responding units from the Veenendaal fire station. This provides a quicker overview of the situation on site.
The pilot is being conducted at the Nijverkamp, Ambacht, De Factorij, De Batterijen, and De Compagnie business parks. For this, the Central Netherlands Control Room is collaborating with the Veenendaal fire station, the National Digital Reconnaissance Specialism Team (TDV), the Netherlands Institute for Public Safety (NIPV), Dronebotics, and entrepreneurs at the involved business parks.
During the pilot, a Dronebotics drone automatically flies out to selected types of incidents on the five industrial estates within the municipality of Veenendaal. The live images from the drone are available to the control room within a few minutes. This allows the control room to get a clear picture of the incident more quickly and, if necessary, alert additional emergency services or specialist units before the first vehicle is dispatched.
Watch live during the arrival time
Fire department personnel can also watch live from the vehicle during the response time. This is done via the platform of the fire department’s national Digital Reconnaissance Team. This platform is intended for exchanging (drone) footage during incidents.
The images help emergency responders better prepare for the deployment. As a result, they can make the right operational decisions more quickly upon arrival.
Collaboration with entrepreneurs
The drone equipment for this pilot is provided by Dronebotics. It concerns a commercial drone solution made possible in part by entrepreneurs in the business parks involved. These entrepreneurs are united in the Bedrijvenkring Ondernemend Veenendaal (BOV).
Research into the added value of live video
With the pilot, the parties involved are investigating the added value that real-time drone images offer for incident response and operational situational awareness. This specifically focuses on supporting the control room, the information position of the emergency services, and the further development of image management within the Safety Region.
The pilot runs for a predetermined test period. The results will be evaluated afterwards to determine whether this method can be implemented more broadly or even nationwide in the future.
