Driven: 2026 Subaru Uncharted

The 2026 Subaru Uncharted is a new battery-electric compact crossover built in collaboration with Toyota. It is roughly the size of a Crosstrek, but its sleek bodywork, quick acceleration, and road-focused handling give it a very different personality. While it lacks the rugged character of most Subarus, we found the Uncharted engaging, comfortable, and fun to drive.

The Uncharted’s sharply sloped roofline, short overhangs, and low-slung body make it look more like a tall hatchback than a traditional SUV. Sharing much of its hardware with the Toyota C-HR, its modern styling is especially apparent from the rear, where a small ducktail spoiler, steeply angled glass, and concealed door handles create a smooth, sporty profile. There is no rear windshield wiper, presumably because airflow over the steeply raked glass helps clear away water. The unusual rear door handles are integrated near the window line, adding to the uncluttered appearance.

It comes in three grades: Premium, Sport, and GT. The entry-level Premium is front-wheel-drive, while the Sport and GT come standard with dual electric motors and Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. Every model has a useful 8.2 inches of ground clearance, though the Uncharted still looks and feels more at home on pavement than exploring rocky trails. The range-topping GT adds 20-inch wheels, a panoramic glass roof, ventilated front seats, and heated rear seats. Our Metropolis Gray Metallic Sport tester rode on 18-inch black wheels and had a clean, contemporary look without being overly flashy.

The FWD variant Uncharted Premium produces 221 horsepower and offers an EPA-estimated 308 miles of range. Sport and GT models get a second motor driving the rear wheels, increasing output to a substantial 338 horsepower. The additional power reduces the estimated range to 287 miles in the Sport. Every version uses a 74.7-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The dual-motor Uncharted is seriously quick for a small crossover. Subaru estimates the run from 0 to 60 mph takes about 4.3 seconds, and it feels every bit that fast. Power delivery is immediate and forceful, making quick work of on-ramps and passing slower vehicles on the highway.

The Sport and GT also include Subaru’s dual-mode X-MODE system, with settings for Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud. Grip Control and Hill Descent Control provide additional assistance on slippery or steep surfaces. A Multi-Terrain Monitor can display the path immediately ahead of the vehicle and show where its wheels are positioned. These features provide genuine foul-weather and some light-trail capability, even if the Uncharted’s bodywork looks more suited to the city than the wilderness.

The Uncharted is also more entertaining in the corners than we expected. Its battery pack gives it a low center of gravity, while the relatively firm suspension tuning keeps the body composed during quick changes of direction. The steering has a nice weight, and the vehicle feels planted without becoming harsh over rough pavement. Its dynamics are more engaging than the typical compact crossover, and it feels more like a sporty hatchback from behind the wheel. Four levels of regenerative braking can be selected using paddles behind the steering wheel. Even the strongest setting does not provide the aggressive deceleration of a true one-pedal mode. Still, the higher settings recapture more energy without making the vehicle feel jerky like one-pedal setups.

Charging is handled through a NACS port located on the right-front fender, and Subaru includes an adapter for CCS1 DC and J1772 Level 2 AC chargers. At a compatible 150-kW DC fast charger, the battery can go from 10 to 80 percent in about 28 minutes. Charging slows considerably as the battery approaches full capacity, so adding the final 15 or 20 percent can take nearly as long. Battery preconditioning helps improve charging speed in cold weather and can activate automatically when a fast-charging station is entered as the navigation destination. As with any EV, installing a Level 2 charger at home will provide the greatest everyday convenience compared to public charging.

The Toyota influence on Uncharted is especially clear inside, and that’s not a bad thing. A large 14-inch touchscreen runs a version of Toyota’s multimedia system, which we prefer to Subaru’s less intuitive interface. It responds quickly, its menus are easy to understand, and physical controls remain available for commonly used climate and audio functions. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, along with voice controls activated by saying “Hey Subaru.” The panoramic camera system provides crisp front, rear, side, and overhead views, with visual distance indicators that make parking easy. Front Cross-Traffic Alert can detect vehicles approaching from either side when pulling out of a restricted view, though we found it somewhat oversensitive. Subaru’s EyeSight suite is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot monitoring, pedestrian detection, and automatic emergency braking.

The dashboard has a distinctive flat-topped design, with a 7-inch digital instrument display placed high in the driver’s line of sight. Its positioning makes a head-up display unnecessary while still providing an unobstructed view of the road. We like this setup, but depending on your height and seating position, we could see how the top of the steering wheel could block sightlines to the display – especially for shorter drivers. The flat top of the rounded “squircle” steering wheel mitigates this to a degree and provides bonus knee clearance.

The textured, soft-touch dashboard is accented by a thin strip of copper-colored trim, while color-selectable ambient lighting adds visual impact at night. However, the skinny LED lights can reflect in the side windows and mirrors, which we found distracting. The circular shift-by-wire knob is another unique touch, and we appreciate that it must be pushed down before it can be rotated into gear. We’ve been in some cars with round gear selectors that are way too easy to turn by accident.

Storage is very good for a vehicle of its size. A floating center shelf provides space for a purse or other small bag, while the console bin can open from either the driver’s or passenger side. It’s deeper than it looks, with a second compartment hidden beneath a removable tray. There are two cupholders in the center console, bottle holders in the doors, dual wireless charging trays, and four USB-C ports split between the front and rear seating areas. We were surprised when we discovered there’s no glove box. Instead, the space ahead of the front passenger is occupied by components for a high-efficiency radiant heating system designed to warm occupants while consuming less battery power. Losing the glove compartment is inconvenient, but the center console and in-door storage help compensate.

The front seats are supportive and comfortable, and the Sport trim’s StarTex synthetic leather upholstery should be easy to keep clean. Rear-seat space is sufficient for three adults, though not expansive. Legroom is better than we expected, with the sloping roof only slightly impacting headroom. Rear passengers also get two cupholders in the folding center armrest and USB-C charging ports on the back of the console.

Cargo capacity measures 20.8 cubic feet with the adjustable load floor in its upper position or 23 cubic feet in its lower position. That is useful space for groceries, luggage, and everyday errands, though the sloped rear glass limits the ability to carry tall objects. The rear seats fold in a 60/40 split for larger loads, providing an impressive 60 cubic feet of space when folded. A 110-volt AC outlet in the cargo area can power small appliances or electronics. There is no front trunk because electrical and drivetrain components occupy the space under the hood.

The 2026 Subaru Uncharted is an appealing and enjoyable addition to Subaru’s growing electric lineup. It gives up some of the rugged personality associated with the brand. Still, it makes up for it with crisp handling, strong acceleration, a well-designed interior, and a solid suite of technology features. The front-wheel-drive Premium starts at $34,995, while the Sport begins at $39,795 and the GT at $43,795. With premium paint and a $1,450 destination charge, the Sport tested here had a total MSRP of $41,720. For drivers who want a compact EV that is quick, practical, and enjoyable from behind the wheel, the Uncharted is a solid choice.
