Google’s Pixel hardware day extends beyond phones this year, with the Pixel Watch 5 joining the Pixel 11 family as the company’s latest smartwatch.
The new wearable focuses heavily on proactive Gemini assistance, improved GPS accuracy, expanded health tracking, and better performance. Google is offering the Pixel Watch 5 in 41mm and 45mm sizes, starting at $399 and $429, respectively. Pre-orders open August 12, with retail availability beginning August 20.
Gemini Gets More Useful On The Wrist
Google is pushing the Pixel Watch 5 further toward being a smartwatch that surfaces information before users have to go looking for it.
An expanded At a Glance experience can place context-sensitive information directly on the watch face, such as a boarding pass when arriving at an airport or the remaining stops during a commute.
Google has improved Raise to Talk, letting users lift their wrist and speak to Gemini to start workouts, set timers, or retrieve information such as dinner reservations from Gmail.
Some core actions now run through on-device AI, allowing them to work with lower latency and, in certain cases, without an internet connection.
Gemini Intelligence Proactive Suggestions can turn multi-step tasks into one-tap actions. Google gives the example of receiving a question about an upcoming family dinner, with Gemini finding the calendar details and placing the relevant response on the watch.
A double-pinch gesture can then be used to select, confirm, and send supported responses without touching the screen.
Faster Hardware And More Accurate GPS
The Pixel Watch 5 moves to the Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated processor paired with a dual-chip architecture. Google says the watch has 50% more RAM, a 12% CPU increase, and runs 20% faster than the Pixel Watch 4.
GPS receives one of the larger technical changes. Google claims twice the route-tracking accuracy of the previous generation in difficult environments, using 3D building data derived from Google Maps along with atmospheric corrections from weather reference stations.
In Google’s internal testing of pre-production devices, the company says Pixel Watch 5 produced more accurate exercise route maps in challenging urban conditions than the Garmin Fenix 8 Pro and Apple Watch Ultra 3.
Strength Training And Smarter Recovery
A new Strength Training experience is coming soon, offering step-by-step workout guidance, rest-period tracking, and on-watch logging for weights and repetitions.
Google Health Coach can create personalized strength routines based on a user’s goals, while custom routines can be built through the Google Health app.
Health Coach can factor recovery information such as sleep and heart rate variability into recommendations. Some coaching features require a Google Health Premium subscription.
Sleep tracking gets several changes, including Google’s claimed 15% improvement in sleep-stage accuracy, bedtime automations, and a dedicated bedtime watch face.
A new Smart Wake feature monitors movement and heart rate during the 30 minutes before an alarm, then looks for a lighter stage of sleep to wake the wearer before the scheduled alarm time.
Health Guardian Expands Safety And Wellness Tracking
Google is introducing several new Health Guardian features, including monthly trends covering blood pressure, sleep breathing quality, and insulin resistance. These features are intended for general wellness rather than diagnosis or medical treatment, and availability varies by region.
The biggest safety addition is Breathing Emergency Detection. Using the watch’s PPG sensor, accelerometer, barometer, and on-device AI, Pixel Watch 5 can look for severe and persistent drops in oxygen saturation.
If the watch detects a possible breathing emergency and the wearer does not respond, it can contact emergency services and share the wearer’s location. Google says the feature will launch first in Europe and has not been cleared or evaluated by the U.S. FDA.
Existing safety features such as Loss of Pulse Detection and Satellite SOS remain part of the package.
Battery, Display, Colors, And Pricing
Pixel Watch 5 uses a 3,000-nit domed Actua 360 display and introduces 11 new complication styles, two new watch faces, and generative watch faces.
Battery life is rated at up to 30 hours on the 41mm model and 40 hours on the 45mm model, with fast charging supported through the included USB-C charging dock.
Color options include Fog, Canyon, and Olive with a new Pyrite housing, with Canyon exclusive to the 41mm version. Google is pairing the watches with new HNBR bands.
A Stephen Curry Special Edition will be offered in 45mm for $579, featuring an exclusive sweat-wicking performance loop band. Pre-orders start August 12, with that model arriving in stores September 3.
