A strange visual glitch has surfaced in the new Switch 2 port of Final Fantasy XIV. This bug allows players using the Au Ra character race to alter their horn colors. Normally, this level of customization is impossible in the game. However, this slip-up might just be an early look at a feature planned for the upcoming Evercold expansion.
How the Final Fantasy XIV Switch 2 Glitch Works
Square Enix recently deployed a hotfix to improve load times for the Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy XIV. Shortly after, a Reddit user reported a fascinating cosmetic bug on the game’s official subreddit.

Specifically, the glitch ties Au Ra horn colors directly to face paint options. If a player selects a face paint that dyes their character’s eyebrows, their horns change color as well. Consequently, players can now sport bright green, blue, or red horns instead of the standard black or white scales.
Furthermore, this cosmetic bug remains entirely exclusive to the Switch 2 port. Players logging in on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox will only see the default Au Ra horn colors on these exact same characters.
A Sneak Peek at the ‘Evercold’ Expansion?
Square Enix has not officially acknowledged this visual bug. Therefore, players heavily speculate that it might be leftover code from internal testing.
The upcoming Evercold expansion promises new skin tones and hair colors. Square Enix previously stated that these additions are possible thanks to the major graphics overhaul introduced during Dawntrail. As a result, fans wonder if expanded horn customization is secretly on the development roadmap.
While the developers have not confirmed horn color changes for Evercold, they have promised other highly requested structural updates. During the Berlin FanFest in late July, game director Naoki Yoshida confirmed a major system update for Au Ra characters. Starting in Patch 8.1, players will finally get to change their face types and horns independently. This specific patch is scheduled to launch a few months after Evercold releases.
Patch 7.55 Updates and What Comes Next
The Switch 2 port entered early access about a month ago. This launch happened exactly one week after the massive Patch 7.55 went live.
This recent patch gave max-level players plenty of new content to explore. For instance, the update introduced the Occult Crescent: North Horn adventuring foray and the Forked Tower: Magic public dungeon. Additionally, the patch delivered the final segment of the Phantom relic weapon saga and the climax of Hildibrand’s Dawntrail adventure. It also featured a brand-new capstone quest for diligent players who maxed out their reputations with Tural’s Allied Societies.
Looking ahead, Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold will officially launch in January 2027. Fans expect Square Enix to announce the exact release date during the Tokyo FanFest on Halloween weekend. Since the developers will discuss Evercold’s key player features at this event, time will tell if Yoshida addresses the leaked Au Ra horn colors during the keynote address.
