Google has updated the Preferred Sources button that publishers have on their websites to make it so that the user is taken right back to the page they were originally on. There is new embed code that handles this process to make it easier for users to go back to where they were and stay on your website.
Here is what the flow looks like now – the user clicks that new “Add to Preferred Sources” button, they are shown a new screen that says “Add as a Preferred Source on Google” with an “Add” button, then after they click on “Add,” they are taken right back to where they were.
Here are screenshots of this:
Google wrote, “Readers more easily find their favorite publications in Top Stories, AI Overviews, and AI Mode, while publishers gain a more seamless way to connect with readers across Google.”
You can find the new embed code over here, which I will add to this site soon but until then, make us a preferred source by clicking here.
Google also said Preferred Sources on Google “have already selected more than 600,000 unique sources.” This is up from 200,000 in May 2026 only a few months ago.
