Google communications representative Jennifer Kutz confirmed to The Verge that Reddit gets no preferential treatment in Google’s search rankings or AI search features.
Kutz told The Verge: “Google’s AI search features don’t aim to display content from any specific site or platform and that Reddit ‘gets no special preference’ in Google’s ranking system.”
Kutz also addressed content quality on forums like Reddit, noting that there’s both high- and low-quality user-generated content on these platforms, just as there is in any other format. She said Google’s systems are designed to detect when user-generated content is genuinely helpful versus low quality, rather than favoring the platform itself.
This comes after a couple of years where we’ve documented Reddit showing up more frequently in Google’s search results. But more recently, Reddit itself has pushed back, complaining that Google isn’t sending enough traffic back to the platform despite its visibility in search.
