To unhide the taskbar in Windows 10, move the pointer to the bottom edge of the screen, then open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar and turn off automatic hiding. If the taskbar does not appear, restart Windows Explorer from Task Manager, check Tablet mode and display settings, and then restart the PC.
The most common explanation is that Windows 10 is set to hide the taskbar automatically. Other possibilities include a stalled Explorer process, Windows 10 Tablet mode, a taskbar positioned on another screen edge or monitor, full-screen software, or a display configuration problem.
Key takeaways
- Windows 10 can separately hide the taskbar in desktop mode and tablet mode, so both settings may need checking.
- Moving the pointer to the bottom edge of the screen should reveal an auto-hidden taskbar without restarting Windows.
- Restarting Windows Explorer in Task Manager reloads the desktop shell and often restores a missing taskbar and Start menu.
- Windows key + P cycles display modes when a monitor, dock, or TV has caused the taskbar to appear on another display.
- Microsoft ended standard Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, although special paid or organization-managed servicing arrangements may differ.
How do you unhide the taskbar in Windows 10?
First, move the mouse pointer to the bottom edge of the screen. On a touchscreen, swipe upward from the bottom edge. If the taskbar appears, right-click an empty area, select Taskbar settings, and disable automatic hiding.
Microsoft documents the bottom-edge reveal gesture and the Windows 10 taskbar controls in its taskbar customization guidance.

First, check whether Windows 10 is auto-hiding the taskbar
If the taskbar appears only when the pointer reaches the bottom edge, the taskbar is probably hidden by configuration rather than missing. Auto-hide leaves more room for applications, but the taskbar remains available at the edge of the screen.
- Move the pointer to the bottom edge of the screen.
- Wait briefly for the taskbar to slide into view.
- Right-click an empty area of the taskbar.
- Select Taskbar settings.
- Turn off Automatically hide the taskbar in desktop mode.
- If the computer is a compatible touchscreen or 2-in-1 device, also turn off Automatically hide the taskbar in tablet mode if that option is enabled.
On Windows 10, the setting is under Settings > Personalization > Taskbar. Microsoft support pages may group related controls under Taskbar behaviors, while older Windows 10 builds display the desktop-mode and tablet-mode checkboxes directly. The wording and layout can vary by Windows 10 build, but the setting remains under Personalization > Taskbar; Microsoft describes the available controls in its Windows taskbar settings documentation.
Move the pointer away from the bottom edge and back again after changing the setting. The taskbar should remain visible instead of disappearing.
What if the taskbar does not appear at the bottom?
If the taskbar does not appear when you touch or hover at the bottom edge, check the other three screen edges before treating the taskbar as missing. Windows 10 allows the taskbar to sit along the bottom, top, left, or right edge of the display.
If you find it on another edge, right-click the taskbar and open Taskbar settings. Turn off Lock the taskbar if necessary, then drag the taskbar to the preferred edge. Lock the taskbar again if you want to prevent accidental movement. Windows 10 does not normally move the taskbar by itself; accidental dragging or a changed configuration is more likely. Microsoft explains taskbar placement in its taskbar navigation and accessibility guidance.
| What you see | Most likely explanation | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| Taskbar appears when the pointer reaches the bottom | Auto-hide is enabled | Disable desktop-mode or tablet-mode auto-hide |
| Taskbar and Start menu are both absent or unresponsive | Windows Explorer has stalled | Restart Windows Explorer in Task Manager |
| Taskbar is missing only after connecting a monitor or dock | Display mode or multi-monitor configuration | Press Windows key + P and check display settings |
| Taskbar is on the top, left, or right edge | Taskbar was moved or unlocked | Drag it back to the preferred edge |
| Only notification icons are missing | Icons are hidden in the system-tray overflow area | Open the hidden-icons area or press Windows key + B |
| Entire screen is black or blank | Display, graphics, cable, or driver problem | Use display troubleshooting rather than only taskbar settings |
How do you restart Windows Explorer to restore the taskbar?
Restart Windows Explorer when the desktop is visible but the taskbar or Start menu is missing, frozen, or unresponsive. Restarting Explorer reloads the Windows desktop shell; open applications usually remain open, although the desktop and taskbar may disappear briefly.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- If Task Manager opens in its compact view, select More details.
- Open the Processes tab.
- Find Windows Explorer.
- Right-click Windows Explorer and select Restart.
- Wait several seconds for the desktop, taskbar, and Start menu to reload.
Microsoft recommends restarting Windows Explorer for a blank or stalled Windows desktop. The official blank-screen troubleshooting guidance also documents the fallback method below.

What if Windows Explorer is not listed in Task Manager?
If Windows Explorer is not listed, launch the Explorer process manually from Task Manager.
- In Task Manager, select File > Run new task.
- Enter
explorer.exe. - Select OK or press Enter.
The desktop shell should start again. If the taskbar returns but disappears repeatedly, continue with the display, Tablet mode, restart, and Safe Mode checks below rather than repeatedly relaunching Explorer.
Could Windows 10 Tablet mode be hiding the taskbar?
Tablet mode is mainly relevant to touchscreen Windows 10 PCs and 2-in-1 devices. Tablet mode can change the taskbar experience, but Tablet mode is not the likely cause on an ordinary non-touch desktop computer.
- Open Action Center by selecting its icon near the clock, or press Windows key + A where supported.
- Select the Tablet mode tile to turn it off.
- If the tile is not visible, select Expand to show more quick actions.
- If the tile is still missing, open Settings > System > Notifications & actions > Edit your quick actions.
- Select Add, then add Tablet mode.
After turning Tablet mode off, return to Settings > Personalization > Taskbar and check the tablet-mode auto-hide option as well. Microsoft describes the Windows 10 Tablet mode control in its Tablet mode instructions. Windows 11 uses different tablet behavior and different taskbar settings, so Windows 11 instructions should not be substituted for these Windows 10 steps.
How do you restore the taskbar after connecting a second monitor?
If the taskbar disappeared after connecting a monitor, docking station, or television, check the display output before changing taskbar files or downloading repair software.
- Press Windows key + P.
- Press P again to cycle through the available display modes.
- Select the intended mode, such as PC screen only, Duplicate, or Extend.
- Press Enter.
Microsoft documents Windows key + P as a way to cycle display modes when screen output is misconfigured. The shortcut and related checks appear in the Microsoft display troubleshooting guidance.

- The taskbar is missing from every display: Check auto-hide and restart Windows Explorer.
- The taskbar is visible on the primary monitor but not a secondary monitor: Inspect Windows 10’s multiple-display taskbar options under Settings > Personalization > Taskbar.
- The entire display is blank: Treat the problem as a display or graphics issue. Check cables and connections, cycle display output, and use the applicable blank-screen troubleshooting steps instead of assuming only the taskbar is hidden.
Is the taskbar really missing, or are only its icons hidden?
A visible taskbar with missing notification-area icons is a different problem from a missing taskbar. The system tray is the right side of the taskbar, and Windows may place some notification icons in the hidden-icons overflow area.
Press Windows key + B to move keyboard focus to the notification area, then open the hidden-icons area if it appears. Pinned application icons, Start, the clock, and notification icons have separate visibility controls, so hiding an individual icon does not hide the entire Windows 10 taskbar.
Should you exit full-screen mode before changing taskbar settings?
Yes. A game, video player, browser, or presentation can intentionally cover the taskbar while running in full-screen mode. Press F11 or Esc, depending on the application, or exit full-screen mode through the application’s own controls. If the taskbar returns afterward, no Windows taskbar repair was necessary.
A taskbar that is only one pixel high may also be auto-hidden or affected by a display-scaling or layout glitch. Hover at the bottom edge first, then restart Windows Explorer if the taskbar remains unusable.
When should you restart the Windows 10 PC?
Restart the PC if Explorer reloads but the taskbar remains unstable, or if the problem returns after several shell restarts. A full restart is more disruptive than restarting Explorer but can clear a stuck shell process and complete pending system changes.
- Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete.
- Select the power icon.
- Choose Restart.
If the Start menu works, use Start > Power > Restart. Microsoft documents the standard restart process in its Windows restart instructions.
Windows 10 reached the end of Microsoft’s standard support on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 PC continues to run after that date, but ordinary free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided under standard support. Paid, extended, or organization-managed servicing arrangements may have different coverage, so update availability can depend on the device and its support arrangement.

What should you do if the taskbar keeps disappearing?
A taskbar that disappears after every restart suggests a recurring shell, startup, driver, third-party customization, or policy problem rather than a simple auto-hide preference. Use the following escalation order.
1. Check recently installed software
Temporarily disable or uninstall recently added taskbar customizers, shell replacements, display utilities, or startup programs one at a time. A third-party utility that changes the Windows shell can interfere with Explorer and the taskbar.
2. Test Windows 10 in Safe Mode
Safe Mode starts Windows with only essential drivers and services. If the taskbar works reliably in Safe Mode but disappears during a normal boot, a startup program, third-party service, display driver, or shell customization is more likely than the basic taskbar preference.
Use Windows Recovery Environment and select the Windows startup settings that allow Safe Mode. Microsoft explains the available startup options in its Windows Startup Settings documentation.
Safe Mode is a diagnostic environment, not a normal working mode: hardware features, drivers, and services may be unavailable. Use the Safe Mode result to narrow the cause, then return to a normal boot and disable suspected startup items or update the relevant driver.
3. Consider device management restrictions
On a work, school, kiosk, or organization-managed computer, Group Policy, endpoint-management software, kiosk configuration, or a custom shell may prevent taskbar settings from being changed. Contact the administrator if the controls are unavailable, immediately revert, or are locked.
4. Protect files before repair or reset options
Do not jump directly to a registry edit, repair installation, or Windows reset. The common causes in this article can normally be tested with reversible settings and built-in tools. If a later recovery or reset option becomes necessary, back up important files first and read the selected option carefully because recovery choices can remove applications or data.

What should you avoid when the Windows 10 taskbar disappears?
- Do not assume Tablet mode is responsible on a standard desktop PC.
- Do not treat a completely blank screen as only a taskbar problem.
- Do not download a third-party “taskbar repair” utility before trying the built-in Windows tools.
- Do not begin with registry edits; registry changes are unnecessary for the common causes and can create additional problems.
- Do not assume Windows 11 menu paths are interchangeable with Windows 10.
Windows 10 taskbar recovery decision tree
| Result of the check | Next step | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The taskbar appears at the bottom edge | Open Taskbar settings and disable auto-hide | The taskbar is hidden by a preference |
| The taskbar and Start menu are both broken | Restart Windows Explorer, or run explorer.exe |
The desktop shell may have stalled |
| The PC has a touchscreen or 2-in-1 design | Turn off Tablet mode and check tablet-mode auto-hide | Tablet mode changes the Windows 10 taskbar experience |
| Only one display is affected | Press Windows key + P and inspect multiple-display taskbar settings | The taskbar may be assigned to another display or output mode |
| The taskbar is on another screen edge | Unlock and drag it to the preferred edge | Windows 10 supports four taskbar positions |
| The problem returns after every reboot | Test Safe Mode and investigate startup software, drivers, and policies | A recurring third-party or system-level cause is more likely |
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Windows 10 taskbar hidden?
The most common reason is that Windows 10 has enabled automatic taskbar hiding. Move the pointer to the bottom edge, open Taskbar settings, and turn off automatic hiding for desktop mode and, on a compatible touchscreen device, tablet mode.
How do I bring back the taskbar without restarting Windows 10?
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, select Windows Explorer in Task Manager, and choose Restart. If Windows Explorer is not listed, select File > Run new task and run `explorer.exe`.
What if Task Manager does not show Windows Explorer?
In Task Manager, select File > Run new task, enter `explorer.exe`, and press Enter. Windows Explorer should relaunch the desktop shell and may restore the taskbar and Start menu.
How do I restore the taskbar on a second monitor in Windows 10?
Press Windows key + P and select the intended display mode, such as Duplicate or Extend. If the taskbar appears on the primary monitor but not the second monitor, inspect the multiple-display taskbar settings under Settings > Personalization > Taskbar.
Is Windows 10 still supported?
Microsoft ended standard Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 PCs continue to work, but ordinary free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer included under standard support; paid, extended, or organization-managed arrangements may differ.
The Bottom Line
Start with the least disruptive fix: move the pointer to the bottom edge and disable auto-hide under Settings > Personalization > Taskbar. If the taskbar and Start menu remain missing, restart Windows Explorer or run explorer.exe. On touch devices check Tablet mode; after connecting a display check Windows key + P. Use Safe Mode only when the problem keeps returning after normal restarts.
