I forgot about this Sam Neill masterpiece, which is now streaming free

When the news recently broke that Sam Neill, one of the kindest and most versatile actors in the entertainment industry, had passed away, I was deeply saddened, but it also made me reflect on his incredible body of work. I’ll never forget watching his iconic performance as Alan Grant in Jurassic Park for the first time as a kid, and his standout roles in Dead Calm, The Piano, Peaky Blinders, and Thor: Ragnarok only reinforced what an exceptional talent he was.

But while reflecting on Sam Neill’s career, I was reminded of his role in The Hunt for Red October. In the film, he stars alongside other Hollywood giants, including Sean Connery, Stellan Skarsgård, Tim Curry, and James Earl Jones.

Directed by John McTiernan and released in 1990, The Hunt for Red October is based on Tom Clancy’s bestselling novel of the same name. It follows Soviet submarine captain Marko Ramius (Sean Connery) as he seemingly defects to the United States aboard the Soviet Union’s most advanced nuclear submarine, triggering a tense race between American and Soviet forces. As both sides scramble to determine his true intentions, CIA analyst Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin) must convince US leaders that Ramius is seeking asylum rather than preparing to launch a renegade nuclear attack.

Sam Neill plays Captain Vasily Borodin, Ramius’ loyal second-in-command, delivering one of the film’s most memorable and heartfelt supporting performances.

If you’ve never seen The Hunt for Red October and want to watch Sam Neill in a role quite different from Alan Grant, or if it’s been a while since you last saw it, now is the perfect time to revisit it. It’s currently available on this free streaming service, but only for a limited time.
