The Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) brought a successful prosecution in the District Court against a drone pilot for failing to display their operator registration and infringing on restricted airspace.
The case involved a Mr. Ricardo Rea, a drone operator and photographer, who posted videos of the illegal drone flights on various social media platforms, which brought him to the attention of the IAA.
He pleaded guilty, last January, to flying his drone illegally within restricted airspace and failing to display his operator registration. The court at the time ordered Mr. Rea to promote the importance of adhering to the regulations through his social media channels. He appeared before the court today to confirm this action had been carried out and for final judgement.
The court today applied the probation act and directed Mr. Rea to pay €2,000 towards the IAA’s legal costs.
Commenting on the outcome, David Hansell, Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Inspector at the IAA, emphasised the importance of compliance in maintaining public safety:
“As the State’s Civil Aviation Regulator, the safety of the public is our priority. Airspace may be restricted to drones for several reasons, including safety. Infringing on that airspace can endanger both the public and other airspace users. Before flying your drone, ensure you aware of any restrictions by checking the chart on our website and downloading the latest data file for upload to your drone. It is a legal requirement to be aware of airspace restrictions before flying.”
