KB5050083 was released on January 17, 2025 as Windows 11 Insider Preview build 26120.2992 for the Dev Channel. It was based on Windows 11 version 24H2 and was intended for testing—not for general Windows 11 users.
The headline feature was a redesigned Windows Search preview for certain Copilot+ PCs. On supported Snapdragon-powered systems, Search could combine traditional indexing with semantic indexing, allowing descriptive searches such as “bridge at sunset” or “Europe trip budget” instead of requiring an exact filename or phrase.

What improved Windows Search did
KB5050083 previewed a Search system that used semantic indexing alongside traditional indexing. Instead of searching only for exact words in a filename or document, users could describe what they wanted in ordinary language.
Microsoft’s examples included:
- “bridge at sunset” to find a relevant image;
- “Europe trip budget” to locate a document based on its subject;
- “change my theme” to find the relevant Windows setting.
The preview could be accessed through Windows Search in File Explorer, the taskbar search box, and Settings. The processing was designed to take place locally on the PC for files in indexed locations, so an internet connection was not required for the supported local-search scenarios.
Hardware requirements and rollout limits
The initial KB5050083 announcement limited the improved Search preview to Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs. Microsoft defines Copilot+ PCs as Windows computers with an NPU capable of more than 40 trillion operations per second, but that general definition should not be confused with universal availability for this particular flight: the initial rollout focused on Snapdragon systems. Support for AMD- and Intel-powered Copilot+ PCs was planned for a later rollout.
Readers do not need to buy a new computer to install Windows 11 Insider builds. A purchase is relevant only if the improved Search preview itself is a deciding factor and the existing PC does not meet the hardware requirements. If you are comparing Copilot+ PC laptops, verify the processor family, NPU capability, Windows edition, and current Microsoft rollout information rather than assuming that every Copilot+ badge exposed the KB5050083 Search experience.
Availability could also differ between two PCs running build 26120.2992. Microsoft used gradual feature rollouts, and some changes were associated with the Windows Update option that allows users to receive the latest updates as soon as they are available. A matching build number therefore did not guarantee that the new Search interface would be visible.
Local files—not the later cloud-search expansion
In this original flight, the improved Search preview covered locally stored files in indexed locations. Microsoft said support for searching photos and text in cloud storage providers such as OneDrive was planned for a future flight. Cloud-photo search and broader cloud-file scenarios documented in later 26120 announcements should not be attributed to KB5050083.

Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows
From there, users could review indexed locations and enable Enhanced indexing for the entire PC. Expanding indexing can make more files discoverable, but it can also increase indexing work and may expose more of the drive to Search. It does not turn unsupported file types or cloud-only content into searchable local files.
Supported languages and file formats
Microsoft listed the following supported languages for the preview:
- Chinese
- English
- French
- German
- Japanese
- Spanish
The listed document formats were TXT, PDF, DOCX, DOC, RTF, PPTX, PPT, XLS, and XLSX. Listed image formats were JPG/JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, and ICO. These lists matter because semantic Search was a staged preview, not a universal replacement for Windows Search across every language, file type, storage location, or Windows PC.
Click to Do adds a Refine action
On Copilot+ PCs, KB5050083 added Refine to Click to Do under the Rewrite actions. It was intended as a proofreading and rewriting aid for selected text.
Microsoft described two ways to open Click to Do:
- Press Win+Click on text.
- Press Win+Q.
Users could then choose Refine under Rewrite. Other Click to Do actions remained available. If actions were missing, Microsoft advised checking for updates to the Photos and Paint apps, because those applications were involved in some Click to Do functionality.
Changes available on other Insider PCs
The Search and Click to Do additions were Copilot+ PC experiences, but Microsoft also included changes and fixes intended for Windows Insiders more broadly.
File Explorer
For users included in the relevant gradual rollout, right-clicking a location in the File Explorer navigation pane could show a new New Folder option in the context menu.

The flight also addressed several File Explorer problems:
- File date and time properties could change unexpectedly after copying files.
- The search box could lose focus while the user was typing.
- Searches could trigger repeatedly.
- Details Pane icons did not always respond correctly when the Windows theme changed.
- Duplicating a tab could produce a brief black flash.
Magnifier shortcuts and controls
KB5050083 added Ctrl+Alt+Minus as a quick way to switch between the current Magnifier zoom level and 1x zoom.
Magnifier also gained buttons for resetting the view to fit the screen or returning to the user’s previous or preferred magnification. These changes were aimed at reducing the need to adjust zoom manually after switching between applications or viewing modes.
Windows Backup restore behavior
Microsoft changed the taskbar behavior after restoring a backup through the Windows Setup experience on a new PC. The restored system would receive a standard Windows 11 taskbar. Applications would still be available through Start and Search, and users could pin them again.
Microsoft’s January 21, 2025 update to the announcement noted that this behavior was not rolling out in the European Economic Area at that time. That regional qualification is important: the backup change should not be treated as universal availability.
Vulnerable-driver blocklist update
The build added drivers to DriverSiPolicy.p7b, the Windows Kernel Vulnerable Driver Blocklist file. The change addressed drivers considered at risk of Bring Your Own Vulnerable Driver attacks.
This was a security-hardening change rather than a visible application feature. In some cases, software or hardware that depends on a blocked vulnerable driver may stop working or require a newer driver from its manufacturer.

Known issues in build 26120.2992
Because KB5050083 was a Dev Channel preview, Microsoft documented issues affecting system recovery, Search, Click to Do, Recall, live captions, and other Windows components. The most relevant issues were the following.
Reset can show the wrong build number
After using Settings > System > Recovery to reset the PC, Windows could incorrectly display build 26100 instead of 26120. Microsoft said this display problem would not prevent the PC from receiving future Dev Channel updates.
Arm64 Windows Recovery Environment error
On Arm64 PCs, booting into the Windows Recovery Environment could produce error 0xc0e90001. Microsoft said a subsequent Dev Channel flight would fix the problem. If recovery is required on an affected system, avoid assuming that the error means the Windows installation is permanently damaged; use the available Windows recovery and support options and update to a later flight when possible.
Search reliability issues
The improved Search preview could still behave inconsistently. Microsoft listed these issues:
- The taskbar Search box might not show its matching underline and sparkle interface.
- In rare cases, the improved Search experience required a reboot before it worked.
- File Explorer Search could become unresponsive.
- Offline Outlook searches could fail to return some results.
- A pulsing underline animation might continue instead of stopping.
- A Search tip could appear every time the File Explorer Search box received focus.
These limitations are particularly important when evaluating the feature. A missing result did not necessarily mean that the file was absent: the location might not have been indexed, the format or language might not have been supported, the content might have been cloud-only, or the preview itself might have encountered one of the documented bugs.
What to do if the feature is missing or unreliable
- Confirm the build: Press Win+R, enter
winver, and verify that the installed build is 26120.2992 or a later 26120 flight. - Confirm Insider status: Check Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program and verify that the PC is enrolled in the Dev Channel if you intentionally want preview software.
- Check the latest-updates setting: In Settings > Windows Update, review the option for receiving the latest updates as soon as they are available. This could affect access to gradually released features.
- Review indexing: Open Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows and confirm that the folder is included in indexed locations. Enhanced indexing can include more of the PC.
- Restart once: Microsoft specifically noted that rare cases required a reboot before improved Search began working.
- Test a supported local file: Use a file in an indexed local folder and one of the documented formats, rather than testing first with an online-only OneDrive file or an unsupported format.
- Update related apps: If Click to Do actions are missing, check the Microsoft Store for updates to Photos and Paint.
- Report persistent preview bugs: Use the Windows Feedback Hub and include the build number, PC processor/NPU type, whether the file is local or cloud-based, indexing settings, and the exact Search behavior.
Do not treat a general PC-cleanup or repair utility as an official fix for KB5050083’s Search, WinRE, or Click to Do bugs. Microsoft’s documented fixes and later Insider flights are the appropriate path for build-specific problems.
How KB5050083 fits into the 26120 development line
Build 26120.2992 was delivered through the Windows 11 version 24H2-based 26120 development train. Microsoft had explained that these Dev Channel builds used an enablement-package model on top of the 24H2 base. Features could be controlled independently, which helps explain why the build number alone did not determine every visible change.

Microsoft released build 26120.3000 on January 24, 2025, making it the newer Dev Channel flight. That later announcement continued the improved Search preview and described additional cloud-photo and cloud-file text scenarios for some OneDrive use cases. Those capabilities belong to the later rollout and should not be presented as features included in the original KB5050083 release.
Should you install KB5050083?
For ordinary Windows users, no. KB5050083 was not a stable cumulative update intended for general deployment; it was a Dev Channel preview with gradual feature availability and documented reliability problems.
It made sense primarily for Windows Insiders who:
- understood that Dev Channel builds could contain breaking bugs;
- wanted to test the early semantic Search experience;
- owned a supported Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PC;
- could tolerate Search, recovery, or application compatibility problems; and
- were prepared to submit diagnostic feedback and move to later flights.
Dev Channel features can be gradually rolled out, changed, removed, or never shipped outside the Insider program. Microsoft also treats Dev Channel releases as parallel development work rather than a promise about the final behavior of Windows 11.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is KB5050083 a regular Windows 11 update?
No. KB5050083 was a Windows 11 Insider Preview release for the Dev Channel, not a stable or generally available Windows 11 update.
Which PCs received the improved Search feature?
Initially, the improved Search preview targeted Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs with a supported NPU. It was not available on every Windows 11 computer, and gradual rollout meant that even eligible Insiders might not see it immediately.
Did KB5050083 add OneDrive cloud search?
No. The original preview searched locally stored files in indexed locations. Microsoft described cloud-photo and broader cloud-file search as later-flight functionality.
What replaced Windows 11 build 26120.2992?
Microsoft released build 26120.3000 on January 24, 2025, replacing 26120.2992 as the newer Dev Channel flight. Later 26120 builds followed it.
The Bottom Line
KB5050083 (build 26120.2992) was a January 17, 2025 Windows 11 24H2-based Dev Channel preview, not a stable update. Its main attraction was semantic Windows Search for initially supported Snapdragon Copilot+ PCs, with local indexed-file support—not the later OneDrive cloud-search features. It also added Click to Do’s Refine action and several broader Windows fixes, but its gradual rollout and known Search and Arm64 recovery issues made it suitable for testers rather than everyday PCs. Build 26120.3000 and later flights superseded it.
