Pakistan just marked a historic milestone in the energy and tech sectors. The Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDC) successfully confirmed the presence of geothermal lithium in Sindh. Specifically, they found this critical mineral inside “formation water”. According to recent reports, this officially marks a first for the country. Importantly, the recorded lithium concentrations rival higher-tier geothermal brines currently under commercial development across Europe and North America.
Extracting Geothermal Lithium Sustainably
OGDC made this massive discovery during the advanced geochemical analysis of a high-temperature geothermal well. This well actively operates under OGDC’s pilot geothermal program in Sindh.

Meanwhile, OGDC’s technical teams are already collaborating directly with international consultants to guide this next phase of exploration.
If subsequent studies confirm commercially recoverable resources, Pakistan will finally secure a strong position in global critical mineral supply chains. Ultimately, this development could easily attract heavy foreign investment and create entirely new industrial opportunities across the country.
