Hermes Agent installs with a single command. On Linux, macOS, WSL2 or Android under Termux, one curl line pulls in its own prerequisites and leaves you with a running agent; Windows and macOS also have desktop installers. That fact quietly settles an argument most hosting comparisons get wrong. A one-click image for Hermes does not save you an afternoon of work, because there was never an afternoon of work. It saves you perhaps ten minutes.
So if the install is not what you are paying extra for, what is? The honest answer is everything that happens after it: who applies the next update to a project that shipped roughly 3,650 commits between two releases, who takes the backup that protects the skills the agent writes for itself, and who answers when the machine stops responding at an inconvenient hour.

The three routes, and what each one actually automates
Manual install on a plain VPS. You provision an Ubuntu server, run the install command, connect a model provider, and configure your messaging surfaces. Nothing else is done for you: no firewall policy, no snapshot schedule, no isolation decision, no update strategy. Hetzner and Contabo sell this route and nothing more.

One-click marketplace image. The provider ships a prepared machine so the runtime, dependencies and agent come up together. DigitalOcean publishes a Hermes Agent 1-Click App alongside its OpenClaw image, and its approach to those images is documented in public: on the OpenClaw build that means a Caddy reverse proxy with a Let’s Encrypt certificate issued against the IP address, a randomly generated gateway token, device pairing, ephemeral Docker containers for execution, fail2ban and unattended OS upgrades. What you skip is the provisioning-and-install sequence, plus whatever hardening the image carries. What you keep is the agent’s configuration, its updates and its health.
Fully managed. Read down that table and the pattern is hard to miss. The three routes differ by two rows at install time and by five rows for the rest of the server’s life.
How long does each route really take?
The install command is the same command on every provider. What varies is the provisioning around it, and the honest range is minutes, not hours.
A manual install on a clean Ubuntu box is: create the server, wait for it to boot, log in, run the installer, add an API key, connect a surface. Someone who has done it before is finished inside half an hour. Someone who has not will spend most of that time deciding which model provider to use — a decision no image makes for you either.

A one-click image removes the provisioning and install steps and hands you a machine that is already running the agent. Call it ten to fifteen minutes saved on a first deployment, and rather more if the image also arrives hardened, because you are inheriting decisions rather than researching them.
A managed plan removes the same steps and then keeps removing work every week afterwards. That is the part worth paying for, and it is invisible on day one — which is exactly why people who choose on day-one convenience frequently choose wrong.

The spread between the cheapest credible server and the most serviced one is roughly five dollars a month. Set that against the model bill: community estimates for an actively used agent land at $50 to $200 a month, with a commonly cited figure of about $0.30 for a single complex task on budget models. The hosting decision is not where your money is going, and optimising it to the last euro is misdirected effort.
Where does each route break?
The manual VPS breaks on maintenance. Not immediately — a fresh install runs happily for weeks. It breaks when a release you did not read about changes something you depended on, when the disk fills with logs and a growing recall index, or when you discover the backup you assumed existed does not. Hetzner publishes no uptime figure for its cloud plans, and Contabo’s backup is a paid add-on rather than a default.
The one-click image breaks on the pinned version. An image is a snapshot of good practice on the day it was built, carrying a fixed agent build that starts ageing immediately. DigitalOcean’s own OpenClaw materials show how quickly this gets confusing: its documentation points at a Droplet from $12 a month while its engineering write-up cites a $24 minimum for the same image. Whatever image you deploy, update it after first boot and confirm the current size recommendation rather than trusting a figure you read somewhere.

The managed plan breaks on control. Validated updates mean the provider decides when a release reaches you, which is the trade you are deliberately making. Cloudways also publishes no uptime percentage or SLA on the product page, so the reassurance is operational rather than contractual.
The thing all three routes leave with you
Hermes writes skills as Markdown files with a YAML frontmatter header once a task finishes with five or more tool calls, curates memory across sessions and keeps a full-text index over past conversations. All of that lives on disk on your machine. No route in this comparison creates a vendor-side copy of it unless you arranged one.
That makes backup policy the single most consequential difference between these routes, and it is the reason the managed option earns its premium on this particular agent rather than on agents in general. Automated daily backups protect something that took months to accumulate. A snapshot you keep meaning to schedule protects nothing.
The second thing that stays with you is the execution backend. Hermes supports local, Docker, SSH, Daytona, Singularity and Modal, and that choice is yours on every route. Docker is the sensible default on any shared or business-critical machine; Daytona and Modal hibernate when idle, which allows a small always-on server for the agent and a serverless sandbox for the heavy or risky work. No provider makes that decision for you, and no provider’s marketing mentions it.
Which route should you pick?
Pick a managed plan if you already know you will not apply updates or test restores yourself. That is not a failure of discipline, it is a realistic assessment, and Cloudways at $9.99 for the Scout tier is cheaper than most people’s monthly coffee budget. Move to the $19.99 Operator tier if browser automation is in your workflow, since a headless browser is what makes 2 GB uncomfortable.

Pick a one-click image if you want the agent under your own account, with root access, but would rather inherit a vendor’s setup decisions than research your own. DigitalOcean is the strongest choice on this route, because it is the only vendor that has published how its agent images are hardened, which is worth more than a feature list when you are handing a machine your credentials. The trade-offs are real: no uptime figure appears on the Marketplace listing, its own materials cite two different minimum Droplet prices for the OpenClaw image, and the pinned agent version in any image starts ageing the day it is built, so update immediately after first boot. Hermes itself stays self-managed on this route regardless of who prepared the machine.
Pick a plain VPS if you are comfortable owning a server and will genuinely schedule snapshots. Hetzner is the cheapest credible option; Contabo gives you 8 GB for about the same money if browser automation and Docker-isolated tools are in your plan. Both leave the entire operational burden with you, and both are excellent value on that understanding.

Is the one-click image worth paying more for on Hermes?
Less than it is on software with a complicated install, because Hermes installs from one command that pulls in its own prerequisites. The image is worth paying for when it also brings hardening decisions you would otherwise research, or when it comes attached to a support contract you actually want. Judge it on what surrounds the image, not on the install time it saves.
Can I move from one route to another later?
Yes, and the move is a file operation rather than a rebuild. Skills, memory and configuration live on the server, so a snapshot restore or a file-level copy carries the agent’s accumulated knowledge across. Verify the restore on the new machine before decommissioning the old one.
What size server should I start with?
The project publishes no fixed requirement and says capacity follows the workflow. In practice, 1 vCPU and 2 GB is comfortable for chat surfaces and light tools on an external model; 2 vCPU and 4 GB once browser automation, scheduled jobs and Docker-isolated execution are switched on; 4 vCPU and 8 GB for several projects with sub-agent delegation, where disk fills before memory does.

Does any of these include the AI model?
No. Every route expects your own key — Nous Portal, OpenRouter, OpenAI or any compatible endpoint, including local runtimes such as Ollama or vLLM. Cloudways states plainly that LLM costs stay with your provider, and the same is true everywhere else.
Do I need a GPU?
Only if you decide to run the model locally. With an external provider, the server runs the agent, its tools and its schedule while inference happens elsewhere, and a small CPU instance is sufficient.
What is the cheapest way to run Hermes properly?
