Samsung’s foldable lineup has never been more interesting than it is in 2026. Alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 8, a new, wider model aimed squarely at the upcoming foldable iPhone, the company has also announced the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, which is the direct successor to last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 7.

The phone carries forward Samsung’s familiar, tall book-style foldable formula with a meaningful set of upgrades. The Fold 8 Ultra starts at ₹1,99,990 in India, which is ₹25,000 more than the Fold 7’s launch price of ₹1,74,999. In this comparison, we’ll figure out whether the Fold 7 is still worth buying in 2026, or you should spend on the Fold 8 Ultra.

Fold 8 Ultra vs. Fold 7: Design

When it comes to design, the Fold 8 Ultra retains most of its elements from the Fold 7 (review). The overall dimensions (excluding the unfolded thickness), the weight, and the back glass (Victus 2) and the frame remain the same. The glass on the cover screen, however, has been upgraded to Gorilla Glass Victus Ceramic 3.

Another change is the Titanium Flex hinge, which not only improves the hinge’s strength but also reduces the visible crease on the display. The IP rating, however, remains the same as the Fold 7. Samsung could have bumped up the rating to IP68, similar to the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, but for now, it’s a missed opportunity.

Had it not been for the colors, you might not be able to distinguish between the Fold 8 Ultra and Fold 7, only because both phones have a vertical triple-camera setup on the back, a punch-hole camera at the front, and another punch-hole camera on the inner screen.

Fold 8 Ultra vs. Fold 7: Display

The overall dimensions of the cover screen and the internal display remain the same on the Fold 8 Ultra and the Fold 7. However, it’s the inner screen’s resolution that has gone up significantly, matching the cover screen’s display.

Further, Samsung has bumped up the peak brightness on both the screens to 3,000 nits, which should help the phones’ outdoor visibility and legibility. Another difference is the visibility of the crease. We’ve already mentioned in our hands-on review of the Fold 8 Ultra how the crease doesn’t feel as obstructive now, and that could help turn things in the phone’s favor.

Fold 8 Ultra vs. Fold 7: Performance

If you ask me, the Fold 7 feels quite smooth in 2026. However, the new chip on the Fold 8 Ultra should take a step forward and either improve peak performance or longevity.

For those catching up, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy is an overclocked version of the regular 8 Elite Gen 5, the chip we’ve already tested on the OnePlus 15 (review), iQOO 15 (review), realme GT 8 Pro (review), and the vivo X300 Ultra (review). On all the smartphones, the chip has done exceptionally well.

Whether it comes to day-to-day performance, heavy multitasking, high-graphics extended gaming, video editing, or even extended heavy workloads, the 8 Elite Gen 5 should hold up noticeably better than the 8 Elite. RAM and memory options remain the same on both. However, that doesn’t mean that the 8 Elite isn’t good.

In fact, even 8 Elite-powered phones can push video games to their maximum settings, and the Fold 7 is no different. Regular users won’t notice a difference unless they’re using both phones together. For your reference, we’ve attached both the processors’ benchmark scores below.

One thing to keep in mind: these numbers are only for your reference. Usually, we’ve seen manufacturers throttling chipsets in foldables, primarily to maintain optimal operational temperature and avoid excessive battery drain. There’s a good chance that the SD 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy won’t do as well on the Fold 8 Ultra as the Galaxy S26 Ultra.

Fold 8 Ultra vs. Fold 7: Software

The Fold 8 Ultra ships with One UI 9 out of the box, offering new features like Now Nudge, Now Brief, AI Assistant Activity, and Smart Switch for iPhone transfers. Other additions include two-way and three-way split view, a floating control panel, and a couple of other camera-specific abilities.

Along with the One UI-specific addition, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series is also the first to get Google’s Gemini Intelligence, the true agentic AI experience that can add products to your cart based on a list you create in notes or fill forms for you online. Like the Fold 7, the Fold 8 Ultra will also get seven years of software updates, starting from 2026.

Fold 8 Ultra vs. Fold 7: Cameras

While the primary camera on the Fold 8 Ultra remains the same as the Fold 7, it’s the 50MP ultrawide camera that offers four times the resolution as the 12MP ultrawide shooter on the Fold 7. Even the aperture has gone bigger, from f/2.2 to f/1.9; the camera should do better in low light.

Other hardware, such as the 10MP telephoto camera, 8K 30fps video recording, and two 10MP selfie cameras (one on the cover screen and another on the inner screen), remains the same. However, Samsung has added a couple of software-based features, including Cine LUT Color Grading, My FanCam, Camera Assistant overhaul, and voice-activated photo assist.

The Fold 7 still holds its ground, and that’s only because four out of the five camera sensors on the handset are retained on the Fold 8 Ultra. Unless Samsung decides to keep the software features exclusive to the Fold 8 Ultra, both phones provide an almost similar camera experince.

Fold 8 Ultra vs. Fold 7: Battery Life & Charging

This is the first time that Samsung has used a silicon-carbon battery on its smartphones. The Fold 8 Ultra, despite featuring a similar form factor as the Fold 7, features a 13% larger battery. That, combined with the more efficient chipset, should result in at least one to two additional hours of screen-on time in real-world usage on the Ultra.

The charging speed has been increased from 25W on the Fold 7 to 45W on the Fold 8 Ultra, which is yet another quality-of-life improvement. Wireless charging, on the other hand, has only increased from 15W to 20W, and Samsung hasn’t added the built-in magnetic wireless charging rings yet.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is the most complete Samsung foldable to date, and it earns that title by refining the right things. Everything from the smartphone’s battery, chipset, screen brightness, to its ultrawide camera and charging speed has been improved.

If you own a Fold 7 and shoot ultrawide occasionally, the upgrade may not feel urgent. But if you’re coming from a Fold 6 or older, or buying your first Samsung foldable, the Fold 8 Ultra is the one to get.

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 launched a year ago as Samsung’s thinnest, lightest foldable ever, and in 2026, with the Fold 8 Ultra driving its price down, it makes a compelling case for itself all over again.

At ₹1,74,999 for the base variant, and potentially lower during sale events, it offers the same 8-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display, the same 200MP primary camera, and the same class-leading multitasking experience as its successor, at a meaningfully lower price.

For buyers who want to experience Samsung’s flagship foldable formula without paying the Ultra premium, the Fold 7 is the smartest buy in the segment right now.
