Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 5: High-Res Audio & ANC

Sennheiser has announced the MOMENTUM True Wireless 5, its latest flagship true wireless earbuds, pairing a redesigned fit with high-resolution audio support, improved active noise cancellation, Dolby Atmos head tracking, and an uncommon feature for this category: batteries that users can replace themselves.

Priced at $299.95, the MOMENTUM True Wireless 5 are scheduled to begin shipping September 3 through Sennheiser’s website and select retailers.

High-Resolution Audio Meets Bluetooth 6.0

Sennheiser continues to use its 7mm TrueResponse dynamic transducer, manufactured and tested at the company’s facility in Tullamore, Ireland. Bluetooth 6.0 connectivity joins aptX Adaptive support for wireless audio up to 24-bit/96kHz, with aptX Lossless available when paired with a compatible source.

Snapdragon Sound support brings a low-latency mode aimed at gaming, and the earbuds support Google Fast Pair, Microsoft Swift Pair, and multipoint switching. Sennheiser has included a selectable “robust mode” intended to maintain a steadier wireless connection in crowded radio-frequency environments.

Listeners can adjust the sound through the free Smart Control Plus app, which now provides an 8-band equalizer, guided Sound Personalization, and more granular control over earbud settings.

Replaceable Batteries Could Give These Earbuds A Longer Life

Battery longevity is one of the more interesting parts of the MOMENTUM True Wireless 5. Both the earbuds and Qi-enabled wireless charging case use user-replaceable batteries. Sennheiser says the cells can be swapped in minutes using a compact screwdriver, giving owners a way to restore battery capacity after years of use rather than replacing the entire set of earbuds.

The earbuds are rated for up to 12 hours of continuous playback per charge, with the case extending total listening time to as much as 40 hours. An eight-minute quick charge provides up to one additional hour of playback.

For a product category where aging batteries can effectively put otherwise functional hardware on borrowed time, the replaceable design is a practical change.

New Design, ANC, And Dolby Atmos Head Tracking

Sennheiser redesigned the earbud housing using data gathered from thousands of ear models. The new fin-free shape was rated more comfortable than the previous generation by 73% of the company’s testers. IP54 resistance provides protection against dust, sweat, and splashes, and the charging case has a narrower profile designed to fit more easily into pockets.

The revised adaptive hybrid ANC system uses a dedicated four-microphone array and includes an automatic anti-wind mode. Voice calls tap six microphones, two bone-conduction voice accelerometers, and an AI speech-extraction algorithm designed to separate the wearer’s voice from surrounding noise.

Interactive head tracking is optimized for Dolby Atmos sources, creating a spatial audio presentation that responds as the listener moves their head. Sennheiser says the head-tracking function can be used with other audio content, too.
