I’ve been working in system administration since the 1980s, so I am not the audience for the Synology BeeStation Plus 8 TB. However, most of you probably aren’t expert Ansible users, let alone know your way around Kubernetes, and the idea of writing Linux shell scripts or Windows PowerShell scripts probably gives you hives.

If all you want is a straightforward Network Attached Storage (NAS) drive you can use without thinking about it, the BeeStation is for you.
The Synology BeeStation Plus 8 TB is certainly the least intimidating way to own a private cloud I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen many NAS devices. With the BeeStation, all you need to do is follow the guided setup, plug it into your UPS and your Ethernet, and — Ta-da! — you’ve got a combined file vault, phone-photo backup target, cloud-sync hub, and modest Plex server.
I must point out, though, that while the BeeStation makes installing Plex easy, setting up Plex with your own library can be a real pain. I’ve used it myself for years with my terabytes of old movies, and it still often annoys me.
Its major weakness is that it contains a single, non-redundant internal drive, so it is convenient local storage, but it’s not a complete data-protection or backup device. It also has no Wi-Fi support. You must connect it to your network with an Ethernet cable.
Setup and software
Synology’s aim with this NAS is not to compete with a diskless NAS for hobbyists; it is to provide the closest thing to a personal Dropbox, Google Drive, or iCloud Photos appliance without any sweat. The core experience includes:
- Phone and computer backup. It can collect content from phones, PCs, or Macs, USB drives, and cloud photo libraries, putting that data in a local system under your control.
- Private photo library. Local AI can identify people and subjects for photo search without sending images to the cloud for analysis, according to Synology.
- Cloud consolidation. It can bring together iCloud Photos and Google Drive workflows rather than forcing a sudden, all-or-nothing departure from existing services.
- Simple sharing. It is intended to make private links, multi-device synchronization, and remote file access approachable for nontechnical users.
The design trade-off is that Synology has removed most of the knobs. That’s good for the buyer who wants an appliance, but limiting for anyone accustomed to Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM), TrueNAS, Unraid, or a Linux server. You can also forget about using BeeStation Plus to run containers, build a complex backup topology, host services, configure detailed network rules, or experiment with storage tiers. It’s not suitable for advanced NAS tasks.
What you get
The 8 TB BeeStation Plus is the high-capacity version of Synology’s simplified personal-storage platform. It comes ready to use with an 8 TB Synology HAT3310 7,200 RPM drive, of which about 6.98 TB is usable. Unlike a DiskStation, it does not run the full DSM interface or expose Synology’s wider package ecosystem. Instead, it presents a focused, guided experience built around BeeFiles, BeePhotos, desktop sync, mobile backup, and browser-based management.

Under the hood, it’s far more capable than the original BeeStation:

The wired-only network connection is worth emphasizing. BeeStation has no Wi-Fi. It connects to your router or switch with the included Ethernet cable. Once connected, you can access it over the local network or remotely through Synology’s service.
Performance and media
The Celeron J4125 and 4 GB of RAM are a meaningful jump from the original BeeStation’s Realtek/1 GB platform. The 7,200 RPM 8 TB disk should also improve local workload responsiveness compared with the original 5,400 RPM 4 TB unit.

Nonetheless, it’s one Gigabit Ethernet port sets its ceiling. That’s not bad, but well behind a modern 2.5 GbE NAS. With these specs, the BeeStation is good for:
- Automated laptop and desktop backups.
- Smartphone photo offload and browsing.
- Documents and ordinary creative-project files.
- Several standard-definition streams or a single 4K video stream.
- A personal Plex library, particularly when clients can direct-play common formats.
It’s not so good for:
- Large 4K video libraries and frequent concurrent transcoding.
- Moving hundreds of gigabytes of video between a fast workstation and the NAS.
- Editing video directly from shared storage.
- Several users performing heavy transfers simultaneously.
- An archive that needs more than 7 TB usable now or soon.
Who is it for?
The BeeStation Plus 8 TB is very well-suited to a person or family who wants to move photos, files, and media off recurring cloud storage plans without becoming a part-time NAS administrator. It has enough processing power for quick local AI photo search, competent file service, backups, and straightforward Plex use. My own testing found it delivered 115 Mbps reads and 90–100 Mbps writes, which is essentially where its single Gigabit Ethernet connection tops out.
Buy the BeeStation Plus when ease of use is the overriding requirement. Buy a conventional two-bay NAS when recoverability, expandability, or network performance matters more.

But the BeeStation Plus is also expensive. At its core sits a single, preinstalled 8 TB hard drive. There are no user-accessible drive bays, no RAID mirror, no 2.5 GbE networking, and no path to adding capacity internally. A conventional two-bay NAS with two drives costs more once equipped, but provides a much better foundation for important data.
The critical caveat: One disk
The BeeStation Plus has a single internal disk. A hard drive failure, physical loss, a severe electrical event, or certain kinds of user error can leave you dependent on your separate backup. It’s nice that Synology includes a three-year Acronis True Image Essentials license for one computer, but that protects the computer, not the NAS.
Use the BeeStation Plus safely by treating it as the primary working copy and maintaining at least one additional backup. A sensible minimum is:
- BeeStation Plus for always-available files, photographs, and media
- An encrypted USB backup disk periodically connected and stored elsewhere when not in use
- An encrypted off-site backup for irreplaceable material
RAID 1 in a two-bay NAS helps keep the device online after one disk fails, but it is not a reliable backup system. It won’t protect you from a mistaken deletion, ransomware, fire, theft, or a bad sync. The right backup framework, as always, remains the 3-2-1 rule: three copies, on two media types, with one copy offsite.
Connecting to your computer and phone
By default, you connect to the BeeStation via the web interface or an app. If, like me, you prefer to treat it as just another network drive, you can do that by turning on SMB.

To do this, take the following steps:
To enable SMB on a Synology BeeStation Plus, first enable Local Access and create a local BeeStation account; then turn on SMB Service from the same settings page. You can then connect using the BeeStation’s local IP address from Windows, MacOS, or Linux.

Enable SMB
- Open the BeeStation web portal and sign in as the owner/admin.
- Go to System Settings → Advanced Settings → Local Access.
- Turn on Local Access.
- Create a local account and password if you have not already. Use this account for SMB services.
- On that same Local Access page, enable the SMB Service toggle. Note the BeeStation’s private LAN IP address shown there — for example, 192.168.1.50.
- Connect using that address from a device on the same local network.
You should now be able to get to the NAS’s files.

Low-end NAS comparison
The BeeStation competes less with fully featured NAS enclosures than with the old “personal cloud” category. Products like WD My Cloud Home used to dominate this space. However, while you can still find My Cloud Home units, WD is no longer building them. The difference is that current low-cost two-bay NAS options are generally more flexible and safer for primary storage, whereas BeeStation is easier to get started with.

The QNAP TS-233 is the strongest direct alternative for buyers who will tolerate a modest amount of setup. It uses a quad-core 2.0 GHz ARM Cortex-A55 processor with 2 GB RAM, one Gigabit Ethernet port, and two SATA bays. Populate it with two matching drives in RAID 1, and it can survive the failure of one drive. That’s something BeeStation can’t do. QNAP’s devices have a much steeper learning curve, but I like them.
The Asustor Drivestor 2 Gen2 is compelling, where 2.5 GbE is available. Its Realtek RTD1619B, two 3.5-inch bays, RAID 1 support, three 5 Gb/s USB ports, and Btrfs snapshot capability make it a better pure storage appliance for a user with a faster desktop, switch, or home network. Its constraint is the meager 1 GB of fixed RAM, which limits ambitions beyond files, backup, and light services.
The TerraMaster F2-212 is the low-price alternative: a two-bay device using the same general Realtek RTD1619B class of processor and 1 GB RAM, with hardware video acceleration but only 1 GbE. It is sensible for straightforward backups and light media duty, though its software ecosystem is thinner than Synology’s or QNAP’s.
The UGREEN NASync DXP2800 is not as turnkey, but it changes the equation for advanced users. Its Intel N100 processor, 8 GB DDR5, two M.2 slots, two SATA bays, and a 2.5 GbE port make it much better suited to containers, multiple services, fast transfers, and a serious media library. Its rated maximum storage is 76 TB with two 30 TB SATA drives and two 8 TB M.2 SSDs.
ZDNET’s buying advice
Choose the BeeStation Plus 8 TB if the goal is “make my photos, files, and media private and accessible this afternoon.” It is especially attractive to families, photo-heavy Apple households, and users who want an iCloud Photos or Google Drive-like experience while retaining local control of their data. The 8 TB model’s nearly 7 TB usable capacity is good. The Synology BeeStation Plus 8 TB (BST170-8T) has an official US list price of $799, but retail pricing can vary substantially. Recent sales have put it in the roughly $380–$570 range.
Pick the QNAP TS-233 or Asustor Drivestor 2 Gen2 if data resilience is more important than plug-and-play convenience. Budget for two NAS-rated disks and configure RAID 1. You’ll sacrifice half the raw capacity, but gain an easier recovery path after a single-drive failure.

Choose the UGREEN DXP2800 if you expect to outgrow simple file storage. It is the better platform for Plex/Jellyfin, containers, media-server work, local AI experiments, 2.5 GbE transfers, and evolving homelab use,
The bottom line: The BeeStation Plus 8 TB is an excellent personal cloud appliance, not a top-notch, serious NAS. For people who would otherwise keep everything in Google Drive, iCloud, Dropbox, or scattered USB disks, that distinction may be exactly why it works. For anyone storing irreplaceable reporting archives, family photos, or a growing media library, pair it with robust backup — or start with a two-bay NAS instead.
