TECNO’s 0mm Display Border Concept May Change Smartphone Design Forever

The Last Millimeter Has Been the Hardest to Remove

Display circuits, screen packaging, structural support, and safety clearances all require a small inactive area around the panel. That hidden hardware creates the black edge users still see on virtually every smartphone today.

TECNO says its engineers focused on solving the “last millimeter” problem rather than simply making the bezels thinner. According to the company, the new concept compresses the visible border to 0 microns, allowing the active display to extend to the phone’s outer edge.

More Than Just a New Screen

However, removing this last millimeter wasn’t an easy task. This bezel-free device needed much more than a different display panel. TECNO says it redesigned the phone’s internal architecture from the ground up. Engineers used advanced internal stacking techniques, a new structural layout, and custom display packaging to fit all the necessary components without leaving a visible black edge.

Instead of treating the display as a separate component inside the frame, the company rebuilt how the screen and the phone’s internal hardware work together. This engineering challenge is arguably the most interesting part of the project.

Modern smartphones are packed with display drivers, antennas, sensors, speakers, cameras, and structural reinforcements. Moving or shrinking these components without affecting durability or performance is a significant technical hurdle. Apparently, Tecno managed to overcome these challenges.

A Different Viewing Experience

A borderless display changes more than the appearance of a phone. Without a visible black frame, videos stretch naturally across the entire front of the device, creating a more immersive viewing experience. Games also benefit from the extra screen area, while reading articles, browsing photos, or scrolling through apps can feel more natural because there is no visual interruption around the edges.

TECNO describes the effect as making the display appear to “float” in the user’s hand, with digital content extending seamlessly to the outer frame.

The company says the technologies developed for this concept are not limited to the screen itself. TECNO expects the engineering work behind the project to influence future developments in several areas, including:
