REI 650 Jacket

The beginning of summer might feel like a weird time to go shopping for a down jacket, but buying in the off-season is one tried-and-true way to get a great deal on winter gear. (Plus, you may find yourself reaching for your jacket before the summer’s over anyway. I was glad I had mine last night when it started hailing on our campsite in Colorado’s Golden Gate Canyon State Park.)
REI’s 650 Down jacket is a simple, no-frills take on the genre. Like the name implies, its recycled nylon shell is stuffed with 650-fill down; a DWR coating keeps off light precip (though it won’t be enough for, say, pop-up summer thunderstorms in the Front Range foothills). At 10.9 ounces for a men’s medium, it’s not the lightest in class. For that price, though? We’re not complaining. (Caveat: The steepest discounts are only available in limited sizes, and may not last.)
