Turtlebox Original Gen 3 Review

I spend a lot of time outdoors, so I always bring a Bluetooth speaker on camping trips, beach days, and other adventures. Good music makes almost every activity more enjoyable, whether I am cooking dinner at the campground, relaxing after a long hike, or simply spending time with family and friends. When I had the chance to use the Turtlebox Original Gen 3, I wanted to see how it would hold up outside.

Over the past month I have taken this speaker on several trips across multiple states. It traveled with me while camping in West Virginia, Ohio, and Michigan. It sat around campfires, provided music during yard games, and even came along for beach days and mornings at the pickleball courts. After spending plenty of time with it, I have a good idea of what it does well and where I think it could improve.

First Impressions

The first thing I noticed after taking the Turtlebox Original Gen 3 out of the box was how solid it felt. This speaker weighs about 10 pounds, so it feels substantial without becoming difficult to carry. The built in handle makes it easy to grab with one hand, and it feels strong enough to trust while walking around a campground or carrying it to the beach.

Turtlebox Original Gen 3 Portability

The buttons on top have a clean and simple design. They sit almost flush with the speaker and respond quickly when I press them. The controls include play and pause, volume, track controls, Party Mode, and True Wireless Stereo pairing. Everything feels well organized and labeled, so I never had to search for the button I wanted.

On the back of the speaker I found a waterproof cover that protects the charging port and connections. The cover fits very tightly. At first I thought it might be difficult to open, but I quickly realized that tight seal helps keep water and dirt out. Since this speaker carries an IP67 rating and can even float, I appreciate the extra protection.

Turtlebox Original Gen 3 Performance

My first trip with the Turtlebox Original Gen 3 took me to Fayetteville, West Virginia. My family stayed at a small quiet campground for four nights while we explored the area. During the day we enjoyed whitewater rafting, visited caves, explored local attractions, and spent plenty of time hiking.

Every evening we returned to camp tired from the day’s adventures. While someone cooked dinner and everyone relaxed around the campsite, I turned on the Turtlebox. It quickly became part of our nightly routine. Music played while we made food, sat around the picnic table, and played yard games before heading to bed.

After West Virginia we stopped at Hocking Hills, Ohio, for another three nights. We spent most of our days hiking through the beautiful trails and rock formations. Once again, the speaker came with us every day and provided background music while we relaxed between activities.

One thing that immediately stood out was how quickly it connected to my phone. I simply powered it on and within seconds my music started playing. I never experienced random disconnects or connection problems during any of our trips.

Battery Life on the Turtlebox Original Gen 3

Battery life has impressed me more than anything else.

Before leaving for my trip I simply removed the speaker from the box, connected it to my phone, and started using it. I never charged it before our first camping stop.

After four days in West Virginia and another three days in Ohio with daily use around the campground, the speaker still had battery remaining. I finally decided to charge it before heading to our next stop at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio. That matches Turtlebox’s claim of more than 25 hours of battery life very well.

Since receiving the speaker I have only needed to charge it twice during the past month despite using it regularly.

The only thing I wish Turtlebox would change involves the charger. The speaker includes its own power supply, and the documentation states that I should use that charger. Personally, I wish everything simply used USB C charging. I already carry USB C cables for my phone, camera, power banks, and several other devices. It would make packing for trips much easier. Thankfully, the battery lasts so long that charging rarely becomes an issue.

Turtlebox Original Gen 3 Sound Quality

Turtlebox Original Gen 3 Sound Quality

The Turtlebox Original Gen 3 produces a powerful sound that easily fills outdoor spaces. Music sounds clear, vocals remain easy to understand, and the speaker produces plenty of bass without overwhelming everything else.

Outdoor speakers often struggle because open spaces do not reflect sound the way indoor rooms do. The Turtlebox had no trouble filling our campsites with music. Whether we sat around the picnic table or spread out while playing yard games, everyone could hear the music clearly without needing to push the volume to its limit.

The speaker can reach an impressive 120 decibels, and I never needed anywhere close to maximum volume during my testing. It had more than enough power for camping, beach trips, and outdoor gatherings.

Everyday Use

After finishing our camping trip I continued bringing the Turtlebox with me whenever I had the chance.

Michigan finally started giving us some warm weather, so my wife, daughter, and one of her friends spent the day swimming in Lake Michigan. I packed the speaker along, and it provided the perfect background music while everyone enjoyed the beach.

Even this morning, while I write this review, I brought the speaker to our local pickleball courts. My wife played several games against my brother and his wife while I relaxed nearby with some music playing. It reminded me that music simply makes almost every activity more enjoyable, and the Turtlebox has become my first choice whenever I leave the house.

Build Quality and Features of the Turtlebox Original Gen 3

Turtlebox Original Gen 3 Rubber Feet

Everything about this speaker feels like it was designed for outdoor use. The rubber feet keep it stable on picnic tables and other surfaces. The stainless steel tie downs offer additional mounting options, and the rugged construction gives me confidence that it can survive accidental drops or rough handling.

The Original Gen 3 includes Bluetooth 5.4, Party Mode for connecting multiple compatible Turtlebox speakers, and True Wireless Stereo mode for creating left and right stereo sound with a second Gen 3 speaker. It also includes a built in microphone port and carries an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance while floating if it ends up in the water.

Although I did not test every feature, I like knowing they are available if I decide to expand my setup later.

Final Thoughts on the Turtlebox Original Gen 3

After using the Turtlebox Original Gen 3 across multiple camping trips, beach days, and local outings, it has quickly become my favorite go-to portable outdoor speaker. The sound easily fills large outdoor spaces, the battery lasts long enough that I rarely think about charging it, and Bluetooth pairing remains quick and reliable every time I turn it on.

My biggest complaint involves the dedicated charger. I would much rather see universal USB C charging for everything I own. Fortunately, the outstanding battery life makes that a small inconvenience instead of a major problem.

If you spend a lot of time camping, boating, hiking, at the beach, or simply relaxing in your backyard, I think the Turtlebox Original Gen 3 deserves a serious look. It feels rugged enough for outdoor adventures while delivering the sound quality and battery life that I expect from a premium speaker. For more information or to purchase the Turtlebox Original Gen 3, visit turtleboxaudio.com or amazon.com.
