Windows 11 Insider Builds June 28, 2024: Canary, Dev and Beta

Microsoft’s June 28, 2024 Windows 11 Insider releases were three separate channel flights: Canary Build 26244, Dev Build 26120.961, and Beta Build 22635.3858. Dev offered the most visible features, Canary focused on fixes and system experiments, and Beta delivered smaller interface refinements; staged rollouts meant no build guaranteed every feature.

What changed in Canary Build 26244?

Canary Build 26244 was primarily a collection of fixes, system-level experiments, and smaller Settings changes rather than a single headline feature. Microsoft’s official Canary announcement documented the following changes.

Windows Backup can include additional sound settings

Windows Backup began supporting additional sound-related settings, including the selected sound scheme, when the relevant Personalization and Other Windows settings backup options were enabled. This did not turn Windows Backup into a complete system image or guarantee that every application, driver, or file could be restored.

Account recovery reminders appeared in Settings

Microsoft began gradually rolling out a banner under Settings > Account encouraging some users to add or confirm a Microsoft-account recovery email address. Because the banner was staged, a compatible build did not guarantee that every user would see it.

Game Pass recommendations reached some Settings home pages

Eligible users who actively played PC games could see a Game Pass recommendation card on the Settings homepage. Microsoft limited the card to Windows 11 Home and Pro editions and required the user to be signed in with a Microsoft account. The card was therefore conditional on edition, account status, and usage signals rather than being a universal Build 26244 feature.

The Fonts link began moving from Control Panel to Settings

Microsoft gradually changed the Fonts Control Panel link so that it redirected users to Settings > Personalization > Fonts. The gradual rollout meant that the old Control Panel route could remain present for some Insiders.

What did Canary Build 26244 fix?

One important fix addressed a Pcasvc.dll error that could affect some users upgrading from Windows 11 versions 22H2 or 23H2 to a 26xxx build. Microsoft also included general improvements and fixes, but Canary remained experimental software rather than a risk-free maintenance update.

Microsoft said that users stuck on an older Canary or Dev build who wanted to reach the newest channel build immediately could use an ISO and perform a clean installation. That is a substantial recovery cost and one reason Canary belongs on a secondary system.

What changed in Dev Build 26120.961?

Dev Build 26120.961 brought the most noticeable user-facing changes in this release cycle, especially for accessibility and sharing. The build was based on Windows 11 version 24H2 and used an enablement-package model, as Microsoft explained in its June 14 Dev announcement.

How did Dev improve Narrator and Voice Access?

Voice Access could be used to dictate text hands-free for Narrator users. Voice Access could also issue Narrator commands, including turning Narrator on or off, changing reading speed, reading a selection, and moving to the next line.

Microsoft made the complete command list available from the Voice Access bar by selecting the help icon and then choosing View all commands > Narrator commands. The combination was particularly relevant to accessibility testers who wanted speech-based control of screen-reader workflows.

What changed in the Start menu?

Microsoft began rolling out a new account manager in the Start menu. The account manager provided users signed in with a Microsoft account with a glanceable view of account benefits and account-management actions. The feature was staged, so installing Build 26120.961 did not ensure that the new interface appeared immediately.

What did Windows Share add?

The Windows Share window gained a button for copying files directly. Windows Share could also generate QR codes for URLs and cloud-file links. For example, a user could select the Share button in Microsoft Edge and then choose the Windows Share options to create a QR code for a link.

These changes were useful for moving a link to a phone or sharing a cloud resource without manually copying and retyping the address, but availability depended on Microsoft’s rollout controls.

Which problems did Dev Build 26120.961 fix?

Microsoft listed fixes for startup applications that failed to launch despite being enabled, missing location-permission prompts that could cause application problems, and a DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL bugcheck affecting some recent flights. Fixes reduced known problems but did not make the Dev channel suitable for every primary computer.

Why might a Dev feature be missing after installation?

A Dev feature could be present in the build but inactive on a particular PC because Microsoft was using Controlled Feature Rollout. Microsoft’s June 28 Dev feature-enablement announcement said the rollout began with a small percentage of eligible Insiders and that the Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available toggle was required for earliest access.

Build availability and feature availability were therefore separate conditions. Two PCs running Build 26120.961 could show different Start, accessibility, or sharing behavior. A feature might be enabled by Microsoft’s service, require a reboot, depend on an account, region, hardware configuration, or language, or be paused after a problem was reported.

Microsoft temporarily paused the June 28 Dev feature enablement on June 30 while investigating reported issues. Microsoft later announced its resumption with Build 26120.1252 on July 15 in a follow-up Dev Channel post. Features in an Insider build could also be modified, removed, or re-enabled, and Microsoft did not promise that every experiment would ship publicly.

What changed in Beta Build 22635.3858?

Beta Build 22635.3858 was the most modest of the three flights. The build added an indicator showing when an application had multiple tabs in its File Explorer thumbnail in Alt+Tab and Task View, along with minor changes to the Share experience. Beta was the more conservative choice in this comparison, but Beta did not mean final, fully tested, or universally enabled. Microsoft’s Insider model used parallel development paths, and Microsoft warned that a feature could sometimes appear in Beta before it appeared in Dev. Channel names described testing tracks, not a guaranteed sequence in which every feature moved from Canary to Dev to Beta.

Which Windows Insider channel should you choose?

The appropriate channel depended on whether early experimentation or dependable operation mattered more. A sole work, school, gaming, accessibility, or production computer was generally better left on the stable Windows release.

Microsoft’s Canary guidance emphasized that Canary builds were not tied to a specific Windows release. Features could change, be removed, be replaced, or never ship. The same guidance warned that leaving Canary for a lower-build channel could require a clean Windows installation, which makes channel choice important before enrollment.

How should you prepare before installing an Insider build?

Preparation should assume that the preview installation may fail, break an application, or require reimaging. Windows Backup can preserve selected settings, but Microsoft’s Canary notes about backing up sound settings do not make Windows Backup a substitute for a complete system image.

1. Create a separate backup of personal files. Keep important documents and project data somewhere that does not depend solely on the Insider installation.
2. Confirm that the computer can be restored or reimaged. Make sure recovery media, installation media, or a known-good image is available before changing channels.
3. Record the current system state. Note the Windows edition, version, build number, device model, drivers, and essential applications.
4. Check specialized software. Pay particular attention to VPN clients, security software, printer and scanner drivers, anti-cheat systems, accessibility tools, virtualization tools, graphics drivers, and enterprise management agents.
5. Use a nonessential device where possible. A test PC or virtual machine is safer than the computer needed for daily work.

How do you join or change an Insider channel?

On the relevant Windows 11 Insider interface, the usual route is Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program. The user signs in, links the device to the Insider program, and selects an available channel. Microsoft can change Settings labels and enrollment requirements across releases, so the 2024 path should not be treated as a permanent current interface.

For the June 2024 Dev feature rollout, the relevant switch was Settings > Windows Update > Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available. Enabling the switch could provide earlier access to staged features, but it did not guarantee immediate access because Microsoft still controlled eligibility and rollout timing.

What should you do if Windows Update fails?

If an Insider device does not receive a build or feature as expected, treat the problem first as a possible staged rollout or known-issue condition rather than immediately assuming the installation is corrupt.

1. Wait and restart the device once, because some enabled features require a reboot.
2. Open Settings > Windows Update again and check for pending updates.
3. Verify that the device remains enrolled in the intended channel.
4. Compare the problem with Microsoft’s known issues, including language, driver, Task Manager, and Voice Typing issues listed for Canary Build 26244.
5. Submit a report through Feedback Hub with the build number, device model, processor, graphics hardware, driver versions, reproduction steps, and screenshots or recordings.
6. If the device is stuck on an obsolete Canary or Dev build and must reach a newer build immediately, consider Microsoft’s documented ISO-based clean-install fallback.

What are the rollback and channel-switching risks?

Channel switching is governed by build-branch and build-number compatibility, not only by the channel name selected in Settings. Moving from Beta to stable may sometimes be possible when the branches and build numbers align, but no general success should be promised. Moving from Canary or Dev to stable usually carries a substantially higher risk of requiring a reinstallation.

Canary has the clearest exit warning: Microsoft said that moving from Canary to a lower-build channel requires a clean Windows installation. A user should therefore select Canary only when the device can be wiped and rebuilt without unacceptable loss.

Does this apply to Windows 10?

These Canary and Dev announcements described Windows 11 preview channels. Microsoft’s June 2024 Windows 10 guidance said eligible Windows 10 devices could see Beta-related options, while Canary and Dev were not ordinary Windows 10 preview paths. Windows 10 users should not assume that selecting an Insider option exposes the same builds or features listed here.

What other limitations affected these builds?

Several features depended on conditions beyond the build number. The Game Pass Settings card required Windows 11 Home or Pro, a Microsoft account, and qualifying PC-gaming activity. Account and cloud-connected experiences could depend on Microsoft-account sign-in. Copilot availability was being rolled out by market, with separate distribution considerations for the European Economic Area, and preview features might not have been fully localized.

These conditions explain why screenshots or reports from another Insider may not match a local installation. A missing feature was not automatically evidence that the wrong build had been installed.
