Microsoft Office LTSC 2024 preview launched on April 18, 2024 for Windows and Mac, but the preview is no longer the current product. Microsoft announced general availability for existing commercial and government volume-license customers on September 16, 2024, followed by broader availability on October 1, 2024. Organizations should now evaluate and deploy the released Office LTSC 2024 volume-licensed edition—not an old preview build. Office LTSC 2024 is a perpetual, device-based commercial product for organizations that need a controlled Office feature set on regulated, isolated, fixed-function, or otherwise restricted Windows and Mac devices. It receives security and quality updates, but it does not receive new features after its release. For most connected organizations that want ongoing innovation, cloud collaboration, or Microsoft 365 Copilot, Microsoft 365 Apps is usually the better fit.

What Office LTSC means

LTSC stands for Long Term Servicing Channel. Microsoft uses this model for devices that cannot safely or practically accept continuous Office feature changes. Typical examples include regulated devices, manufacturing process-control systems, medical testing equipment, embedded applications, and computers that must remain disconnected from the internet or tightly controlled.

LTSC is not simply “Office without a subscription.” Its purpose is operational stability. An organization chooses a known feature baseline, validates its add-ins and workflows against that baseline, and then manages security and quality updates without receiving the next stream of productivity features.

Office LTSC 2024 follows Microsoft’s Fixed Lifecycle Policy. Microsoft provides five years of Mainstream Support and no Extended Support afterward. The current support endpoint is October 9, 2029, including the Mac edition; check Microsoft’s Office LTSC 2024 lifecycle page before publishing or planning a long deployment because lifecycle tables and time-zone presentation can change.

Who can obtain Office LTSC 2024?

Office LTSC 2024 is acquired through Microsoft Commercial Licensing, also called volume licensing. It is generally licensed per device rather than through the user-based installation model commonly associated with Microsoft 365 Apps. Microsoft’s Office LTSC licensing guidance lists the commercial editions and programs.

There is no single worldwide retail price. The cost depends on the organization’s licensing agreement, program, edition, geography, purchasing channel, and any applicable government, education, or enterprise terms. Marketplace listings for “lifetime LTSC keys” are not an official Microsoft price list or proof of a legitimate volume license. Licensing administrators should use the organization’s agreement, Microsoft 365 admin center, or an authorized Microsoft licensing partner.

That distinction matters because the following products are different:

• Office LTSC 2024: commercial volume licensing, device-based deployment, perpetual license, fixed feature set.
• Microsoft 365 Apps: subscription-based licensing with continuing feature updates and optional cloud services depending on the plan.
• Office 2024 for consumers: a retail perpetual product family intended for individuals and smaller deployments, with a different licensing and installation path.

A home user searching for an “Office 2024 Professional Plus LTSC” retail download is looking at the wrong product family. Professional Plus is a volume-licensed edition; a normal consumer Office 2024 installer is not a substitute for an LTSC deployment.

Windows and Mac editions

Windows

The primary Windows suites are:

Microsoft’s Office LTSC 2024 overview identifies the volume-licensed Office, Project, and Visio products. Access is not available on macOS, so a Mac deployment cannot provide an Access replacement simply by selecting a different Office package.

Mac

The commercial Mac suite is Office LTSC Standard for Mac 2024. It includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote. It is a 64-bit application suite that supports Intel and Apple silicon hardware, subject to Microsoft’s supported macOS policy.

Mac users should not expect Access, Publisher, or a bundled Teams client. Access is Windows-only; Publisher is not included; and Teams is managed separately. The Mac edition is distributed using Apple package technology rather than the Windows Office Deployment Tool.

What the 2024 preview included

When Microsoft announced the commercial preview on April 18, 2024, the preview lineup included:

• Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024 for Windows;
• Office LTSC Standard for Mac 2024;
• Project Professional 2024;
• Visio Professional 2024.

The preview used the same broad deployment technologies that administrators would recognize from earlier volume-licensed releases: Click-to-Run and the Office Deployment Tool on Windows, and Apple package files on Mac. It was intended for commercial customers to test compatibility, deployment, add-ins, policies, and business workflows before the final release.

That historical announcement is still useful for understanding what Microsoft was preparing, but its preview installation links should not be used as a current production download path. The released product and its current deployment documentation are the relevant sources for new installations.

What shipped in Office LTSC 2024

Office LTSC 2024 includes a subset of features that had already appeared in Microsoft 365 Apps, along with improvements from earlier perpetual releases. It is important to separate “included in the release” from “continues to arrive later”: LTSC receives the former, not an ongoing flow of new functionality.

Across Office

• A new default Office theme and a more consistent visual design.
• Improved accessibility tools.
• OpenDocument Format 1.4 support in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Like reactions for comments.
• More Office add-in API requirement sets than earlier perpetual versions.

Excel

• Dynamic charts that work with dynamic arrays.
• Fourteen new text and array functions.
• The IMAGE function.
• Performance and stability improvements.

PowerPoint

• Cameo for placing a live camera feed directly into a slide.
• Recording Studio improvements.
• Embedded Microsoft Stream videos.
• Closed captions and subtitles for PowerPoint media.

Outlook, Word, OneNote, Access, and Visio

• Outlook: improved search and better meeting-creation options.
• Word: improved recovery of a session after an unexpected shutdown.
• OneNote: drawing and inking improvements.
• Access: integration capabilities involving Dataverse and Power Platform in the Windows Professional Plus edition.
• Visio: additional shapes, stencils, and templates.

Feature availability can vary by platform and edition. For the detailed list, consult Microsoft’s What’s new in Office 2024 and Office LTSC 2024 documentation rather than assuming that every Microsoft 365 feature appears in every LTSC application.

What LTSC does not include

The most important difference is the update model. Office LTSC 2024 is locked to the feature set released with the product. Monthly builds may contain security fixes, bug fixes, and stability improvements, but they do not turn LTSC into a continuously evolving Microsoft 365 Apps installation.

Compared with Microsoft 365 Apps, LTSC does not provide the same continuing cloud-backed feature stream. LTSC alone does not include:

• ongoing feature updates;
• Microsoft 365 cloud storage or a Microsoft 365 service bundle;
• the continuously expanding collaboration experience provided by a qualifying Microsoft 365 plan;
• the broader cloud-backed security and compliance capabilities associated with Microsoft 365 services;
• Microsoft 365 Copilot eligibility simply because LTSC is installed;
• features introduced after the LTSC 2024 release snapshot.

Microsoft’s current overview specifically notes that LTSC lacks the latest cloud-backed capabilities, including real-time collaboration, AI-driven automation, and advanced security and compliance functionality tailored to hybrid work. Some Office files and cloud-connected features can still work where configured, but LTSC should not be confused with a Microsoft 365 service subscription.

Publisher, Teams, and Skype for Business

Publisher is not included. Microsoft says Publisher is being retired and will no longer be supported after October 2026. Organizations that depend on Publisher should plan a replacement workflow rather than selecting LTSC on the assumption that Publisher is still part of the suite.

Teams is not preinstalled. Current deployment documentation treats Teams as a separate application. Deploy it independently using the organization’s approved Teams and endpoint-management process.

Skype for Business is optional. On Windows it can be selected as an optional install, while on Mac it remains a separate optional download. It should not be assumed to be part of the default Office application set.

Current system requirements

Microsoft’s detailed enterprise requirements are more specific than older FAQ wording. In particular, the current table lists Windows 10 LTSC editions—not ordinary mainstream Windows 10—as supported operating systems.

Before deployment, verify the exact operating-system edition and architecture against Microsoft’s current enterprise system-requirements table. A computer running a normal, non-LTSC Windows 10 edition should not be assumed to be supported merely because older documentation said “Windows 10 and later.”

Do not hard-code a macOS version list into a long-lived deployment guide. Microsoft’s rolling three-version policy means the oldest supported major version changes as new macOS releases arrive. Check the current Mac support policy at deployment time.

How to deploy Office LTSC 2024 on Windows

Windows deployment uses the Office Deployment Tool (ODT), not a normal retail MSI installer. The ODT installs Click-to-Run Office packages directly from Microsoft’s Office Content Delivery Network or from an internal share.

1. Download the latest Office Deployment Tool from the Microsoft Download Center.
2. Create a configuration.xml file for the edition, architecture, language, activation method, and update source.
3. Optionally download the installation files to an internal network share.
4. Install Office LTSC 2024 with the ODT.
5. Activate with KMS or MAK according to the organization’s volume-license agreement.

A basic 64-bit Professional Plus configuration looks like this:

Use a real organization-issued MAK client key only where MAK activation is intended. Do not publish or reuse keys from unofficial websites. For KMS activation, use the appropriate Microsoft generic volume license key and the organization’s KMS infrastructure.

Product IDs and channel

The current LTSC suite channel is:

Project and Visio are separate products even though they share the 2024 release family and can be deployed through the same ODT workflow.

Download and install commands

From an elevated Command Prompt in the folder containing setup.exe and your XML file, download the files with:

setup.exe /download configuration.xml

The command window may appear inactive while the download runs in the background. Check the configured SourcePath; the Office content is normally placed beneath an OfficeData directory.

Install the downloaded files with:

setup.exe /configure configuration.xml

For a local-share deployment, add a UNC SourcePath to the <Add> element. If no source is specified, the ODT checks its own folder and can then use the Office CDN. Microsoft recommends direct CDN installation when internet connectivity and bandwidth allow it, but an internal share is appropriate for isolated devices or controlled networks.

Existing Office installations and architecture conflicts

Plan removal before installing LTSC:

• All Office products on the device must use the same 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
• RemoveMSI removes older Office, Project, or Visio installations that used Windows Installer technology.
• Office 2019 and other Click-to-Run installations may require the ODT Remove element; RemoveMSI alone does not remove Click-to-Run products.
• Review installed language packs, add-ins, Project, and Visio before changing the product set.
• Office LTSC installs to the system drive, normally C:; the installation location cannot be changed.

Microsoft identifies the major version as 16.0, which helps preserve many existing Group Policy paths and can reduce compatibility work for add-ins that already support Office LTSC 2021 or Office 2019. That is not a substitute for testing mission-critical add-ins and macros.

Activation: KMS versus MAK

Installation files can be acquired and installed without internet access once they are available on an internal share. “Offline” therefore describes a deployment scenario, not an exemption from activation and patch-management planning. Read Microsoft’s KMS activation guidance and the organization’s licensing documentation before selecting a method.

How to deploy Office LTSC 2024 on Mac

Mac deployment uses Microsoft installer packages and Apple software-distribution workflows:

1. Download the Office LTSC for Mac 2024 installer package through the Microsoft 365 admin center or Office CDN.
2. Deploy the Office .pkg files through Jamf Pro, Intune, Munki, AutoPkg, Apple Remote Desktop, or another approved Mac management system.
3. Download and deploy the volume-license activation package named Microsoft_Office_LTSC_2024_VL_Serializer.pkg.
4. Verify activation and application launch on both Intel and Apple silicon test hardware.

The VL Serializer is available in the Microsoft 365 admin center under Billing > Your products > Volume licensing > Download and keys. Microsoft’s Mac Volume License Serializer documentation contains the current package and deployment details.

An existing Office LTSC for Mac 2021 installation can be upgraded without uninstalling the applications if it has been updated to at least version 16.89, after which the 2024 VL Serializer is run. Test the upgrade path before applying it broadly.

Do not deploy the Mac App Store versions for a perpetual volume license. Microsoft says the VL Serializer is incompatible with Mac App Store Office applications and can leave the installation with reduced functionality. Updates and genuinely offline operation

Office LTSC 2024 typically receives cumulative security and quality updates monthly, generally on the second Tuesday. These updates improve security, reliability, and performance; they do not add the next generation of Office features.

The default update source is the Office CDN. Administrators can instead configure an internal shared folder through SourcePath, UpdatePath, Group Policy, or Microsoft Configuration Manager. WSUS alone is not the update mechanism for Click-to-Run Office LTSC 2024.

An offline update design still needs an internet-connected staging process:

1. Use an approved staging device or administrative network to obtain current Office builds from the Office CDN.
2. Copy or download the refreshed build to the internal share.
3. Test the build against applications, macros, add-ins, policies, and regulated workflows.
4. Release it to isolated devices through the organization’s software-distribution process.
5. Track patch currency and repeat the process for future security and quality releases.

Users can manually check for updates through File > Account > Update Options > Update Now, unless administrative policy hides or controls that option.

This table is a decision aid, not a licensing quote. Microsoft 365 capabilities vary by plan, and volume-license rights vary by agreement. Also, Microsoft 365 Apps is not necessarily “always online”: device-based licensing and extended offline-access scenarios exist, but they require the appropriate plan and configuration.

Which option should an organization choose?

Choose Office LTSC 2024 when most of these statements are true:

• The device performs a fixed or specialized function.
• Feature changes require formal validation or regulatory approval.
• The machine is disconnected, bandwidth-limited, or restricted from cloud services.
• The organization wants device-based commercial licensing.
• A stable Office baseline matters more than access to future features.
• The IT team can maintain an internal activation and patch-staging process.

Choose Microsoft 365 Apps when users need current Office features, cloud collaboration, Microsoft 365 service integration, user mobility, or a path to Copilot. The ability to buy software once is not, by itself, a good reason to select LTSC: perpetual licensing comes with a fixed feature set and a finite support period.

Common deployment mistakes and fixes

“I downloaded Office Home or Office Home & Business 2024. Can I use an LTSC key with it?”

No. Retail Office 2024 and Office LTSC 2024 use different licensing and deployment paths. Use the organization’s volume-license entitlement and the ODT or Mac VL deployment process.

“A website sells a lifetime Office LTSC 2024 Professional Plus key.”

Treat it as a licensing warning. LTSC is a commercial volume-licensed product. Ask the licensing administrator or an authorized Microsoft licensing partner to verify entitlement instead of using unofficial keys, activation tools, or cracked installers.

“The preview is free. Can I keep using it?”

The preview announcement dates from April 2024. It was a pre-release phase, not the current production distribution. Migrate to the released Office LTSC 2024 product using Microsoft’s current deployment and activation guidance.

“The build still receives updates, so why does Microsoft say LTSC is fixed?”

Security and quality updates are not feature updates. LTSC can receive monthly fixes while retaining the same product feature baseline.

“The device runs Windows 10. Is it supported?”

Check the exact edition. Microsoft’s current enterprise table lists Windows 10 LTSC 2019 and Windows 10 LTSC 2021, not ordinary mainstream Windows 10. Do not rely on older generic wording.

“The Mac runs an old version of macOS, but Office still opens.”

Launching is not the same as being on a currently supported update baseline. Microsoft supports the three most recent major macOS versions on a rolling basis, so verify the current policy before relying on future updates.

“We need Access on our Macs.”

Access is Windows-only and is included only with Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024. Office LTSC Standard for Mac 2024 cannot provide it.

“Why is Publisher missing?”

Publisher is not included with LTSC 2024 and Microsoft plans to retire it after October 2026. Select and test a replacement publishing workflow before migration.

“Where is Teams?”

Teams is not preinstalled with the current Office LTSC 2024 deployment. Deploy the Teams client separately.

“We installed Office 2019 and LTSC 2024 together.”

Review Click-to-Run and MSI installation technology, architecture, language resources, and product IDs. RemoveMSI handles older MSI-based products; Office 2019 Click-to-Run products may require the ODT Remove element. Test the removal and activation sequence on a representative device.

“Our isolated devices cannot update directly from the internet.”

Use an internet-connected staging device to refresh an internal Office share, configure SourcePath or UpdatePath, and distribute tested cumulative builds internally. Offline operation does not eliminate the need for recurring patch management.

Bottom line

Office LTSC 2024 preview was a legitimate Microsoft commercial announcement for Windows and Mac on April 18, 2024, but it is now a historical release phase. The released Office LTSC 2024 is a volume-licensed, perpetual, device-based product supported through October 2029, with a stable feature baseline and ongoing security and quality updates.

It is a strong fit for regulated, fixed-function, disconnected, or tightly controlled devices. It is a poor fit for organizations that primarily want the latest Office features, cloud collaboration, Microsoft 365 services, or Copilot. For those connected environments, compare the appropriate Microsoft 365 Apps plan before buying or deploying LTSC.
