Are there cheaper ultralight tents out there than the 3F UL Lanshan 2? Sure. Would we sleep in them? Not if we could help it. When it first hit the U.S. market around 2017, a lot of hikers were skeptical of the Lanshan, a homegrown Chinese trekking pole tent that weighs in at just 2.5 pounds and retails for less than $200. But in our testing, it performed better than that price suggests. The fly, made of 15D silicone-coated nylon, repelled showers with a minimum of sagging, while the 20D nylon bathtub floor held up to abrasion from rocks and roots without springing a leak. At 25.8 square feet of floor space, liveability is comparable to the hiker-favorite ZPacks Duplex. (Ding: While it’s one-sixth of the price of the Duplex, the tradeoff is that the Lanshan 2 is also about twice as heavy.)
Looking for something a little lighter? The single-wall version, the Lanshan 2 Pro, cuts about a half-pound off the Lanshan 2’s weight. Grab it for 5 percent off with the code SAFEHIKING from 3F’s website.
