A couple of weeks ago, VESA introduced a new top-level certification for displays called DisplayHDR True Black 1400, which increases the brightness requirement by 40% compared to the previous top standard (you guessed it, it’s up to 1,400 nits now). Samsung just announced that its new OLED display has earned this certification and that it is already supplying panels to laptop manufacturers.
The certification requires that black pixels remain at 0.0005 nits or lower while white pixels blast out 1,400 nits at 10% On Pixel Ratio (i.e. 10% of screen pixels are showing white, the rest are showing black).
Samsung pulled it off with a tandem design – two OLED panels stacked on top of each other. This enables a higher peak brightness, but it has other benefits too. Since the two panels share the workload, regular brightness levels can be achieved with less stress on the panels. Samsung says that under “typical laptop operating brightness conditions”, the new tandem OLED panel has more than double the lifespan of a single-stack OLED panel.
The company also used new organic emissive materials to further improve the performance and extend the longevity of the panels on top of the benefits of the tandem design.
Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i Aura Edition (11th gen)
The new panel is already featured on the 11th generation of Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i Aura Edition. It’s a 16” touchscreen with 3.2K resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. It’s branded PureSight Pro Tandem OLED by Lenovo and it has the VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1400 certification. At peak brightness, it can reach 1,600 nits. It also has accurate colors with 100% coverage of sRGB and DCI-P3 and 99% coverage of AdobeRGB.
The laptop can be configured with an Intel Core Ultra 7 or 9 processor (356H or 386H) and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5050 or 5060 laptop GPU (both with 8GB of VRAM). System memory is 32GB of LPDDR5X (7,467MT/s, soldered) and there is a 512GB or 1TB PCIe Gen 4 SSD (TLC). The laptop measures 17.2mm thick and weighs 1.9kg with a 92.5Wh battery. Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i Aura Edition (11th gen)
Laptops from other makers will use Samsung’s new tandem OLED display too – models from Asus, Dell and MSI are expected to arrive in the second half of this year. Also, Samsung will demo the new panel at K-Display 2026, which will take place in Seoul between July 22 and 24.
