You’d be hard-pressed to find a lighter sleep system than the Zpacks Summer Quilt, which packs down to the size of a footlong sub and weighs almost nothing.

There are light backpacking quilts and there are ultralight backpacking quilts. Then there’s the Zpacks Summer Quilt: At 9.7 ounces for a regular, this 40-degree number weighs about the same as two sticks of butter or just slightly more than your cell phone. The best part? In testing, it actually performed, keeping our intrepid hikers warm enough for a good night’s sleep during a September test in northern Minnesota. A number of smart design features make it cozier than the weight suggests: A horizontally-baffled sewn footbox kept out drafts, while the vertically-baffled upper section prevented the 900-fill down from migrating down the sides. Add an optional pad-attachment strap for an extra $10 and 6 grams.
